I still don’t think the analogy holds though. The press conference is more like the shareholder’s meeting. That sideline conversation would be more like what would happen between colleagues at a water cooler immediately after losing the account that caused the bad news reported at the meeting.

Probably not in the middle of a company meeting in which we are telling our shareholders how much we have struggled this year.

I don’t agree with that analogy. Athletes are different from businesspeople. They’re basically paid to respond aggressively, and not necessarily as calm intellectuals, when challenged. If they didn’t have that streak in them, they wouldn’t be worth a damn as players in the first place.

That reaction wasn’t ideal at all, but I can understand it coming from an athlete who feels he’s been unfairly challenged and humiliated on the heels of what was obviously a competitive humiliation on the field, and who hasn’t fully had time for the testosterone of the game to wear off yet.

I wouldn’t say “fucking crazy” as much as “a bit too vicariously invested sometimes”.

It’s definitely irrational from an analytical remove but makes more sense as a matter of practical dynamics. If players are marketed as character sprites and people are used to thinking of them as character sprites, some skewing of emotional perspective is to be expected.
