Todd Haley Refuses Josh McDaniels’ Handshake
At the conclusion of Denver’s 49-29 victory over Kansas City, Chiefs coach Todd Haley refused to shake Josh McDaniels’ hand (video after the jump), and instead wagged his finger at the Broncos’ coach and offered some heated words.
According to Jim Trotter of Sports Illustrated, Haley was upset about the Broncos keeping starters in during the fourth quarter, blitzing, and max protecting and throwing downfield with a big lead.
The complaint that the Chiefs pulled Jamaal Charles last year with 2:43 left when he could have tried for the all-time rushing record is irrelevant. In fact, Denver did call off the dogs, and get outscored 12-0 at the end of the game. They called five runs, and two short passes on third down, and did not have any more first downs after the touchdown that made it 49-17 with 11:55 left. Denver did go for it on fourth down at the KC 32 (after the Chiefs had just gone for it to continue to try deep in their own territory), but that is a legitimate play to end the game at the two minute warning. Trying the long field goal to add points would have been more trying to run up the score than going for it to end the game.
If Haley sent up the white flag and conceded defeat at the beginning of the fourth quarter, then I think he has a point. Otherwise, I think he needs to shake hands there and keep his cool. This isn’t high school or college football, where teams can be widely diverse in talent, and teams trailing by a large margin have no chance. I mean, the Chiefs kept their starters in, and Matt Cassel threw for about 400 more meaningless yards after the Chiefs were down big. I don’t get coaches who get upset about situations like this if they themselves haven’t given up. Haley needs to act less like a toddler and more like a leader. [Photo via Getty]

The explosion above the scoreboard really sets the mood.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:19 AM
Haley needs to act less like a toddler and more like a leader.
This is the key point right here.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:20 AM
Quit being a bitch, Haley. This is the pros. Running up the score is never a crime in the NFL.

They meet again in three weeks. Expect a tickle fight at the 50.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:22 AM
i can’t blame haley…it’s gotta be nervewracking being the head coach on a team where you, literally, don’t do a single fucking thing.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:22 AM
Bret Bielema thinks Haley should shut his mouth
November 15th, 2010 at 11:22 AM
Haley is a weiner. This isnt intramurals, brother.

gary patterson thinks this is bullshit.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:24 AM
Chiefs, with the easiest schedule in the history of schedules, probably still ain’t making the playoffs. Shame. Brandon Flowers deserves better.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:24 AM
That’s a badass photo.
And Haley needs to grow a pair.

Hasn’t Haley had a sideline blowup on every team he’s been on? TO, Vick, Boldin?

November 15th, 2010 at 11:26 AM
Well, I hope Jim Trotter is wrong about this. Haley, that is highschool stuff.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:27 AM
Haley should be relieved. The score could have been a lot worse. This makes me think i should attend the game in KC in a few weeks.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:29 AM
Haha, is this Jersey’s doing? Whoever it is, very nice!
November 15th, 2010 at 11:29 AM
Triston: You see any of the KU-NEB game? I didn’t catch it, but I heard it was painful to watch. Nebraska should have turned it over 4-5 times, but Kansas could only muster up 87 total yards of offense. Had 15 yards passing the entire game.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:29 AM
The Dickbag is upset that the Asshat ran up the score?
November 15th, 2010 at 11:30 AM
Haley probably just didnt want to catch the case of sucking that McDaniels has.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:30 AM
Denver only won 49-29? Imagine if they still had Thundercock and not Brady Quinn…

Perhaps Todd should think about stopping somebody and not about the other guy letting up.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:33 AM
I was at the Husker game on Saturday–very boring. NU played very conservatively and Martinez still doesn’t look quite right. The defense was great though. KU’s only decent play was a QB scramble for 15-20 yards and the only reason they even got on the board was because of a fumble.
A&M should be a very good game. Has me very concerned.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:33 AM
I blame Wisconsin, why not?
November 15th, 2010 at 11:33 AM
Haley is an arrogant prick, just like that fat fuck Charlie Weis. Fuck them both. I’m glad Denver dropped 50 on them.
/nurses the last few victory cigar puffs from the Niners and Irish this weekend.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:34 AM
Gods, I didn’t watch any of it but I got the same impression as you. Sounds like KU missed out on a fumble or two and dropped two sure interceptions. Nebraska just dominated the KU line. Sounded pretty ugly.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:34 AM
Totally. Martinez is still hurt, but the backups are too pathetic to start. I could easily see NEB losing. They need Martinez at full speed, but that is most likely not going to happen.

The Chiefs aren’t the Hoosiers. Bielema will get his comeuppance.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:36 AM
Iowa shitting the bed against Northwestern ended that.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:36 AM
I coached AAU basketball at the highest levels. I promise you this, if the opposing coach didn’t concede and take his starters out, we kept trying to score. If you want to admit it’s over, we’ll call off the dogs. Until then, fuck you. And I wanted it the same way with me. If you were killing us (I’m looking at you, Mike Bibby) we were willing to admit defeat, and put the 2nd-3rd string guys in for some game time.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:37 AM
My comment might have been aimed in your general direction, Triston. I can’t get enough of that frownie face.

November 15th, 2010 at 11:38 AM
And the fact that they probably didn’t want to go to two OSU games in a row.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:39 AM
Who is gonna QB Northwestern? How fucking great is it that Persa ruptured his achilles Gramatica style celebrating after a TD.e
November 15th, 2010 at 11:39 AM
Probably would have had Iowa won. And Gameday was at Columbus last week so doing another OSU game might have been seen as a bit much. Not a whole lot of other options.
Speaking of which, it’s this point where the BCS hurts the regular season. With a playoff, the OSU-Iowa, NU-A&M, and to a lesser degree VT-Miami would all have a bit more meaning.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:39 AM
I am disappointed, however, that we’re going to miss out on the chance to make some Gameday signs.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:40 AM
I don’t watch Gameday, but I was hoping for the TAMU-NEB game to get it. Obviously we know where it will be the week after next. The Iron Bowl is going to be epic, and is Fairley gets suspended, AU could be fucked.

Not at all great. I felt terrible for the kid.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:41 AM
Still plenty of importance there. VPISU can clinch the division with a win.

Here’s the field. How are they going to get all the football players in those small cramped locker rooms? Looks like both teams will be standing on the same sideline. Looks like a cluster fuck.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:42 AM
Dr. Tom – The OSU-Iowa game still has quite a bit of meaning as far as the B10′s 2nd BCS bid is concerned. Ohio State needs that game. They leapfrog MSU with it, IMO.

And is it just me or has this year’s slate of Thursday night games been terrible.

Me too, but it’s the perfect analogy for Northwestern football. can’t wait to DL the Mr. Tony radio show today so I can hear Wilbon whine about it.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:44 AM
That looks horrendous. Yankee Stadium did a much better job.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:44 AM
No doubt. An Iowa win means Wisconsin and Michigan State will be in the BCS most likely. Gross. Add in a shitty Big East team and VT and you have some god-awful BCS games this year.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:44 AM
I was careful with my words. Those games are certainly not without merit or meaning and I’ll still watch, but if there was a playoff berth at stake (and thus a shot at a title) I think the impact would be compounded.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:44 AM
Nice win Saturday, irish. Hankerson is a beast. I think Morris might have Wally Pipp’d J12.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:44 AM
This isn’t the right attitude either, at least at AAU. Be the better man – mix in some of your 2nd/3rd stringers with your starters to give everyone some run. It shouldn’t be a matter of who blinks first.

November 15th, 2010 at 11:45 AM
This why I would *almost* rather have NU lose and go to the Cotton Bowl to play Alabama instead of throttling Pitt in the Fiesta Bowl.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:46 AM
@younglefty Morris showing some promise, Hankerson is a star in the making
November 15th, 2010 at 11:46 AM

November 15th, 2010 at 11:48 AM
The BCS is too important for me to run with that train of thought, but I totally understand it. NEB has a great shot at its first BCS bowl since 2001…and they will get Pittsburgh/Cuse/UConn as the opponent. That is fucking terrible.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:49 AM
Todd Haley admonishing Josh McDaniels.
This is like Andy Dick telling Charlie Sheen he needs to get his act together.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:49 AM
Good call. It is the day after Thanksgiving. LSU-ARK would be a great choice.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:49 AM
Jimmy Z shat the bed something terrible on the Bengals’ fake punt yesterday. Cincy lined up with NO PUNTER inside their own 30 and he didn’t call timeout. WTF else did he think they were going to do? Bengals pick up 70 percent of their total rushing yards on the fake punt, end up scoring a TD and the game goes from being 17-3 with the Colts having the ball to 17-10. Just a total brain fart. I like him as a person, but hate him as a coach. I miss Tony Dungy something fierce.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:49 AM
OK, I wasn’t clear. I didn’t keep all the starters in, but we didn’t call the dogs off, either. We kept trapping, and shooting 3′s, until YOU decided it was over. When you called off your press, I called off mine. It’s not the winning coaches job to decide it’s over–it’s the other guys. I didn’t see Haley subbing his starters out, and not trying to score. Why should Denver just take a knee for 10 minutes?
November 15th, 2010 at 11:50 AM
The Big 10 is a step above the Big East in football. IMO, each conference has one too many automatic bids.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:50 AM

November 15th, 2010 at 11:50 AM
If we have archives (do we?) I said Hankerson was legit at the beginning of the season. Shannon is going to be loyal to J12. It is going to be a ugly scene this weekend.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:51 AM
Surely you’re joking. I love to rip the B10, but it is the second best conference this year in my opinion. The Big may have some ranked teams, but I don’t think they are all that great. The Big East is just laughable. Totally pathetic.

If Miami had not shat the bed against UVA this game would be for the division. But no, VTech is not losing to UVA and will once again represent the ACC in the Orange Bowl.

November 15th, 2010 at 11:56 AM
This is the 6th year the ACC has had two divisions, and the fourth time that VPISU is going to win the Coastal.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:56 AM
That’s what makes it so infuriating but even if the Canes win all Tech has to is beat Virginia. Sorry if I think that is near automatic Yang.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:56 AM
Both he and Rodney Harrison’s demeanors on camera are just assaultingly bad. I’m kinda glad next week’s night game isn’t Pats-Colts, that would be a mess.

Tech loses to Boise State and James Madison in back to back weeks and then proceeds to blow through the ACC. The ACC is horrific.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:58 AM
the Arkansas-LSU game is in Little Rock as well, not sure if that matters or not.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:58 AM
I’m glad since I won’t have to stay up til damn near midnight for the game to end.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:59 AM
I’m glad another year of ACC football is drawing mercifully to a close. Whose supposed to win the Atlantic, NCSU? FSU? If the wolfpack wins and its them vs VT, at least some people might care who wins.
November 15th, 2010 at 12:01 PM
Don’t see the Colts winning this one, even if they do get Addai and Collie back. Their offensive line has withered away to nothing this season. Saturday’s currently the only one who I’d say is better than average, and even he has noticeably slipped. Sad days, these. Dink and dunk, avoid a sack, dink and dunk some more. Peyton’s YPA may fall below 6.5 by season’s end.
November 15th, 2010 at 12:02 PM
This indeed. I’m exhausted today, and I’ve had a baby in the house for the past 7 months so that’s saying something.
November 15th, 2010 at 12:03 PM
It is in State’s hands at this point, a scary notion even for them. The ACC is hoping for them to pull it out, a NCST/VT champ. game would sell out BoA stadium for sure.
November 15th, 2010 at 12:03 PM
Yeah, but this method is what kills the Pats since they rarely get consistent pressure on the QB.
November 15th, 2010 at 12:03 PM
That looks horrendous. Yankee Stadium did a much better job.
Of course they did. Greatest fans sitting in the greatest stadium in the greatest city, right?!??@@!?!

Thanks, if only we could play that well consistently. I know GT’s starting center was out by the end fo the game, so that’s something.
November 15th, 2010 at 12:26 PM
After seeing this I’m going to start betting heavily against KC. Not because they got beat badly by Denver so much as how they’re reacting to it… like losers.

I’m extremely late to the party here, but VT will beat the Canes by two touchdowns. That team is garbage, and if it’s a big game with something on the line, Shannon is guaranteed to shit the bed. Count on 3+ turnovers and over 100 yds of penalties for the Canes. They beat a weak GT team and squeeked by an even weaker Maryland team. I’m a Canes fan, but I’m realistic.
