MLB Doesn’t Seem to Understand the Internet
MLB: We’ve been saying for a couple years that MLB has done a horrible job handling the internet, which is where the YouTube generation lives. It’s getting worse, if that’s possible. This week alone, Crossing Broad shredded MLB’s ridiculous YouTube policy, and Bleed Cubbie Blue scolded the insanely idiotic MLB Advanced Media and asked, “What other business … can you think of tries every way possible to prevent its customers from consuming its product?” If you’re looking for a reason why the NBA has passed baseball in the 18-49 demo, this isn’t a bad place to start. As for NL ROY … gotta be Say Heyward.

Yet, the MLB keeps making money….
November 15th, 2010 at 11:03 AM
MLB makes more off of digital media than any other league. They understand the internet extremely well. The other leagues should be taking cues from them on how to monetize it.

Yeah, the NFL’s instant replay system is broken.

It’s fair to say MLB has gone a little extreme with the video shit.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:06 AM
It’s called the NFL and their TERRIBLE access for fans. MLB is actually lightyears ahead of them.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:07 AM
Why is that fair to say? You can view videos on the MLB site. Do you need to be able to embed them on your site? A link probably works just as well.

I have great access to MLB Media. It’s the blogging world that gets pissed about it and understandably so. I can go to MLB.com and find the highlights I want to see, watch MLB.tv and stream the same product to my phone and television via a media center like a PS3.
Like Lefty said, they’re just making tons of money off it.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:09 AM
tobacco.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:09 AM
It’s pretty well accepted that you should try and advertise or place your product wherever people “live” online these days.
MLB actively tries NOT to do that. And no one lives on MLB.com
November 15th, 2010 at 11:10 AM
I think the point is that until MLB puts copious amounts of hot chix on their site, they’re doing the internet wrong.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:12 AM
MLB does a fine job.
if you want to see baseball highlights, and you’re on youtube, and you’re too dumb to go to mlb.com or use a search function, is it really MLB’s fault that you’re a fucking retard?
November 15th, 2010 at 11:12 AM
Because they’ve apparently been scrubbing videos that use 5 to 10 seconds of actual MLB footage mixed in with other random shit that has nothing to do with MLB. Give me a break.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:12 AM
Yet they make more money online than anyone else. Seems to be working out ok fine.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:12 AM

Did you see the NHL Gamecenter app for PS3?
November 15th, 2010 at 11:13 AM
someone who read the links!
November 15th, 2010 at 11:14 AM
You can do that by monopolizing where the content is available and using alternate sites to direct people to yours through targeted advertising. MLB Media does that just fine. They also allow outlets like ESPN.com and other outlets that broadcast their material through alternate mediums to place that content on their sites.
Again, this is a problem for the blogging world and those that only consume that type of media, not for Major League Baseball.

I hate Spence’s name change and I hate Jersey for choosing it. It’s gross. Can’t you guys just make monetary bets instead?
November 15th, 2010 at 11:15 AM
mlb and nfl.com could work on making their sites a little quicker

November 15th, 2010 at 11:15 AM
losing $20 wouldn’t hurt nearly as bad as having this name for a week.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:15 AM
Except that it really hasn’t; the TV ratings you cited do not in any way make that the case.
That said, in total agreement about MLB’s draconian video policies. I acknowledge Lefty’s statement that they are making the most money online, but they could still do so even if they eased up a bit.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:17 AM
MLB.com does a lot of things right that are completely apart from their stance on video rights. The policy is a long-term loser for them.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:18 AM
apparently it isn’t considering that you think sanchez is a top 10 qb.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:19 AM
No.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:20 AM
holy shit. That’s….. that’s the right answer! I am floored. Maybe the apocalypse really is upon us.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:22 AM
I’ll reserve judgment until we see who’s touted for AL Cy Young around here.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:23 AM
I think I agree…but I also don’t think he is going to win.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:23 AM
well I know who that will be. And by the by, I think Felix is the wrong choice.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:23 AM
agree. Rivera.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:24 AM
ha. that’s stupid.

No, but you have me excited about it. If I can finally get my Center Ice package to be worth it, that’d be great. As it stands, I’m lucky to get 1 or 2 games in HD right now.

How about AL ROY? Feliz likely winner?

Carlos Santana should still finish Top 5 in the AL, and might have won if those faggy Sawhx hadn’t conspired to blow out his knee. I hope someone knee-caps Ryan Kalish with a bat next year.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:37 AM
AL ROY – Austin Jackson should be the guy, but the Tigers will probably get screwed out of the ROY and MVP.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:41 AM
Deserves it, but Garcia seems more likely.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:42 AM
Probably. Him or Jackson.
lol wut

Jay V – re: 18-49 demo, this from the Hollywood Reporter piece:
the NBA beat baseball in the 18-49 demo as the seven-game title series earned a 7.3 rating compared with a 6.2 for the six-game World Series.
[That was Lakers/Celtics for NBA and Yankees/Phillies for MLB]
November 15th, 2010 at 11:58 AM
We’ve been saying for a couple years that MLB has done a horrible job handling the internet, which is where the YouTube generation lives
In terms of profits they are the biggest sport in digital media, and its not close.
November 15th, 2010 at 12:03 PM
87 – Jackson should win ROY. Cabrera should win MVP.
Both should win, neither probably will.
November 15th, 2010 at 12:19 PM

You keep wanting this to be particularly meaningful, but these two events grade on a different curve. Full prime time schedule the World Series competes with vs. the rerun programming opposite the NBA finals. Throw in the record setting Game 7 which the baseball series didn’t even have and you have a seriously flawed conclusion. That all assumes that ratings are somehow indicative of something meaningful int he first place.
The NBA is talking contraction and work stoppages. Salaries are almost certainly going to go down for players while ticket prices go up. Baseball has record profits and the big complaint that people have is that everyone makes too much money off the thing. Not sure why you keep insisting that its Baseball that is doomed.
That being said, they should lay off the litigation on the clips a bit.

rerun … and people who are on vacation because it’s June.
sweeps period runs during the MLB playoffs (late Oct/early Nov). More people are in front of their TVs then then they are in mid-June. only 2 of the 5 World Series games were up against the NFL.

November 15th, 2010 at 12:27 PM
@TBL…what Max said.
I am aware of the ratings, but my point is that the ratings are not the barometer that can be used to determine a sport’s popularity.
November 15th, 2010 at 12:28 PM
I can’t believe NL ROY of the year is even going to be close. Heyward is a great young player, but Posey hit as many HR’s and almost as many RBI’s in significantly less games, while posting a higher batting average and catching the best pitching staff in baseball. Even before the post season and everything that happened, how could it not be Posey?
November 15th, 2010 at 12:46 PM
this is so false it’s unreal, but we can tackle that when the award gets handed out
November 15th, 2010 at 1:34 PM

The fewer total watchers pales in comparison to advantage of having the landscape alone. Ask the Summer Olympics.
What I get a kick out of is that according to the most recent figures, baseball has revenues of like 150% and total profits in excess of 200% of the NBA. But according to these posts, MLB isn’t well run and the sport is less popular than the NBA. So how badly run must the NBA be to convert moroe popularity to worse results than the idiots MLB do?
November 15th, 2010 at 2:12 PM
Amen. It is embarrassing how EVERY MLB clip possible is threatened on YouTube or any other source
Why MLB thinks this is a good idea shows how clueless they are
November 15th, 2010 at 2:14 PM
They should give their product away for free. Damn fat cats!!
