If College Football Had a Playoff, This is How the 2010 Postseason Might Look
Playoff: If there was a 16-team playoff in college football, here’s how the brackets might look. The higher seed would be at home for all the 1st & 2nd round games. The first four games would be the left half of the bracket; the 2nd four the right half. 1-16: Oregon (Pac-10) vs. Troy (Sun-Belt). 8-9: Nebraska (B12) vs. Wisconsin (at-large). 4-13: Boise State (WAC) vs. Pittsburgh (Big East). 5-12: LSU (at-large) vs. Ohio State (at-large). 2-15: Auburn (SEC) vs. No. Illinois (MAC). 7-10: Michigan State (Big10) vs. Oklahoma State (at-large). 6-11: Stanford (at large) vs. Virginia Tech (ACC). 3-14: TCU (MWC) vs. Central Florida. Obviously they’re just projections – the Big Ten race isn’t settled, Alabama could sneak in, and so could Iowa, Arkansas, Arizona and Utah.

For Spence.
Hopefully the link works
November 10th, 2010 at 2:34 PM
All for a playoff, but only with the 4.5 BS conferences getting the auto-bid. There’s absolutely no reason to include the champions from the MAC, WAC, or Sun Belt unless they’re undefeated/established like a Boise in which case they can be an at large.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:34 PM
So anybody see the bikini pictures of Ke$sha on Tyler Durden/your celeb website of choice. I bet even Dirt would agree that that is disturbing.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:34 PM
hah
November 10th, 2010 at 2:34 PM
LOL
November 10th, 2010 at 2:34 PM
I would love to watch a whole zero of these games.
Though you could convince me to watch a handful of plays in Wisky-Nebraska and OSU-LSU
November 10th, 2010 at 2:35 PM
Equally as important as a college playoff, TBL, when is the mobile site coming?

Just checked them on the phone… looks like something Coop would kiss to see real girls do stuff.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:38 PM
GSG…i’ll check it out when i get home. i can’t fuckin’ wait.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:38 PM
Wow, three teams there with 2 losses…this is awful, the 2007 season was bad enough but that was an aberration, let’s not make a habit of this
November 10th, 2010 at 2:38 PM

WWTDD is blocked as porn for me at work. I am glad in this instance, I expect. Also, when I see a headline that purports to show me what something looks like, I want pictures, dammit!
November 10th, 2010 at 2:39 PM
THIS AIN’T NO BANK ROBBERY!
November 10th, 2010 at 2:39 PM
I’m just chuckling thinking about the time TBL admonished everyone here for acting “too cool for school” and pretending to not know about her or her songs. Then he proceeded to sing first few lines of “tick-tock” to jog our memory.
Anyone else remember that?
November 10th, 2010 at 2:40 PM
Correct.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:40 PM
I prefer a 12-team format with the top four seeds getting a first round bye and then hosting second round games with seeds 5-8 hosting the opening round.
This would somewhat alleviate travel and logistical problems though not entirely.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:40 PM

November 10th, 2010 at 2:40 PM
Actually…no, they don’t.

November 10th, 2010 at 2:42 PM
I’m half a playoff proponent and half a CFB Luddite. I would enjoy the hell out of playoffs and I would enjoy a bowl season the way it used to be. I kind of hate the BCS because it feels like a half measure but even more because Miami’s only one a single title under this format
November 10th, 2010 at 2:42 PM
Dude… think about what you just said.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:43 PM
one = won
November 10th, 2010 at 2:43 PM
Seeing a lot of talk today on twitter from my friends Andy Staples and Dan Wetzel (a cursedcleveland follower!) One thing I would argue with them and people of their ilk, who bitch about how unfair it is that the small conferences don’t have a chance, is how those small conference schools and their entire athletic departments are funded almost entirely by those million dollar payoffs from the big schools. If the big schools wanted, they could eliminate those immediately – and many of them would have to close up shop on a number of their programs, and possibly drop to D-2 in football.
So while the current championship system obviously is not fair to them, most of those schools aren’t exactly crying about it. They’re happy to be part of the game.

November 10th, 2010 at 2:47 PM
Cursed, I rarely agree with you, but in this case you are dead on point.
I also for about the 80th time bring up the point that the Sun Belt Conference has inferred a position AGAINST a playoff.

Why do Independent league baseball teams not compete for a chance to get
to the World Series?
November 10th, 2010 at 2:49 PM
Don’t schools pay to be a part of the NCAA? I understand that the payouts might be greater than the outlay for smaller programs but the amount of lawsuits involved in just cutting those schools out of the Association might not be deemed a headache worth creating by the power brokers
November 10th, 2010 at 2:49 PM
they get a shitload of money to go play Alabama in September.

November 10th, 2010 at 2:50 PM

why are there multiple divisions of college football teams if only 117 can play for the big NC? are you serious with this question, TBL?

Because most universities see athletics as an extension of the classroom, where young people are given the opportunities to learn and succeed.
But screw it, shut em down.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:51 PM
Wait, so the only reason to have a football program is to try and win the national championship? Holy shit dude
That’s certainly not the reason those schools started football programs in the first place and thus isn’t the reason for their existence today…mostly they exist to make money and provide something for the student body and the surrounding community to enjoy
November 10th, 2010 at 2:51 PM

November 10th, 2010 at 2:52 PM
Look I love watching CMU play football. Last year more so than now, but in no way would they deserve to make a playoff. Whoever wins the MAC this year will probably have 1 more loss than Arkansas will.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:52 PM
Do you think academic institutions in the late 1800′s started up football teams for the sole purpose of winning titles?
November 10th, 2010 at 2:52 PM
Status. They certainly didn’t move up to D1 because they were trying to compete for championships.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:52 PM
You lucked out, NDub. Because what I inked to, you can’t unsee. It’s like a beheading.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:52 PM
Stew Mandel’s 4 team playoff makes much more sense logistically. And also because there are rarely more than 4 deserving teams as he states.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:52 PM
I’m just one person, but my college football interest will wane if they institute a playoff.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:53 PM

November 10th, 2010 at 2:53 PM
Yet again this is a ridiculous notion to have some of these teams in here. In the NCAA tournament the top 40 or so teams are already in the field. So Troy deserves to play in a tournament setting when a one loss Utah team that beat Pitt (a team in this hypothetical field) and crushed an iowa State team that was a two point away from beating Nebraska (also in this field) is out?
That’s fair again, how? Oh right, it’s Utah’s fault for playing in a tougher conference. What a joke. And what happens if South Carolina or a Baylor were to win a title game? Ohio state gets bumped, but Northern Illinois is in? Come on.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:53 PM
I didn’t have any protection on me, but I figured hey, when’s the next time I’m going to be in Haiti?
November 10th, 2010 at 2:54 PM
I bet KC could kick Kesha’s ass though. Has that girl ever lifted a weight in her life. Her skin is a little saggy.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:54 PM
True…but they would also force them back down into 1-AA before they would allow them into a playoff.
You do realize that the Sun Belt is on the the brink of losing its 1-A status, don’t you?

November 10th, 2010 at 2:58 PM
Kelly Clarkson looked pretty good in one of her videos, actually had some abs. However, her bikini pics remind me of a beched beluga whale.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:58 PM
Kelly Clarkson = that girl on Jeopardy the other night from Notre Dame. And you guys were KILLING her. Fame whores.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:58 PM
Wait a second. But in this playoff why would you play a tough OOC game? That’s an extra loss and you lose one game in conference and you could be out. Iowa being out of this playoff debunks that whole point. They went on the road lost to Arizona and then lost by one point to Wisconsin and they are out and Troy and Northern Illinois are in. Do you not see how dumb that is? Iowa would have ZERO incentive to play that game at Arizona or play anyone good if this is how the top teams are chosen.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:58 PM
You know that’s not true right?
/Arkansas-EMU last year
November 10th, 2010 at 2:59 PM
I learned what ceteris paribus is. I feel smarter now.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:59 PM
This is completely inconsistent with your playoff argument. You don’t want teams to play cupcakes in the non-conference because you don’t think the regular season matters. Yet, you insist upon having Troy and other teams of poor quality play someone in the first round of your playoff instead of a 2 loss team from a better conference.
Which is it? You can only pick one.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:59 PM
right now we have seth greenberg with us on the line. seth, why should your team be in the tournament?
November 10th, 2010 at 3:00 PM
Depends on the conference, I think every Big Ten team has its homecoming against a conference foe so they wait until either Minnesota or Purdue comes to town

November 10th, 2010 at 3:00 PM

November 10th, 2010 at 3:00 PM

from a reader:
While listening to Herbstreit Saturday night he kept talking about how the computers would rank the teams. It was at that point that I realized how asinine college football really is. We’re sitting here talking about computers that run some form of an equation to determine the teams most worthy to play for the BCS championship. Computers, we talkin ‘bout computers man. Not a game, not a playoff, computers.
November 10th, 2010 at 3:01 PM
The Sun Belt isn’t long for D-1A anyway, given that pretty soon, everybody’s going to 9 conference games, and that’s going to drive the number of guarantee games down. I know, I know, more facty nonsense.
November 10th, 2010 at 3:02 PM
I’ve done worse than Kelly Clarkson before, even in that awful picture. I can’t really picture Ke$ha other than generic blond. I assume I’ve done worse than her but I don’t know if she has balls or something that changes the equation

November 10th, 2010 at 3:04 PM
Clarkson has put on probably 30-40 pounds since her post-American Idol popularity. She’s a pig now.
November 10th, 2010 at 3:04 PM
I think your page views will be way down with a playoff.
November 10th, 2010 at 3:04 PM
Tom, I’m angling more and more at a plus one (which I would have hated in 2002 when OSU beat Miami). But I do understand that you don’t have two perfect teams to play every year like you did with Texas and USC as well).
November 10th, 2010 at 3:04 PM
The central theme for the playoff crowd is fairness. How are you going to identify the 16 teams for this tournament? Strength of schedule, conference championships, records, polls? Sounds an awful lot like what you’ve got now.
November 10th, 2010 at 3:05 PM
The max playoff I’m in favor of is 8. 16 is way too many and in most years the 16th best college football team has 3 sometimes 4 losses and not having them ni wouldn’t kill anyone.
I am most in favor of a plus 1 because that will stop all of this madness.
November 10th, 2010 at 3:05 PM
Here SC, she’s on the far left

November 10th, 2010 at 3:06 PM

November 10th, 2010 at 3:06 PM
+1 in 2002 would have had Miami vs. USC and OSU vs. UGa, right? That could’ve been a lot of fun.
November 10th, 2010 at 3:08 PM
Feel free to not watch.
November 10th, 2010 at 3:08 PM
She’s a little bit bigger than Clarkson’s current form. Bad hair, too. I will be honest and say I’d probably refrain. Kelly Clarkson had her heyday, I just picture that and know she can get back to it.
I’d still put a keg in her closet today though.

Totally porkable.
November 10th, 2010 at 3:10 PM
Again, I like 12 as you have tiered incentives – First round byes for the top four, home field advantage for the next four – so there’s always something more to play for.
I also think this helps logistics with small towns planning for home games on short notice.
We can qualify the top 12 teams the same way we qualify the BCS teams, but that’s a whole different argument altogether.
I’d be fine with a plus-one as well.

from Wetzel:
(If Auburn stumbles, the SEC may be locked out of playing for the title, which should lead to endless cries for reform from the league.) Others in the league, including the president of Georgia, favor an eight-team playoff, in part because they imagine they’d wind up with an all-SEC final.

If Auburn stumbles, LSU is back in the hunt
November 10th, 2010 at 3:12 PM
OF COURSE they do. but it’s kinda funny that the president of UGA is saying that considering, you know, UGA is perennially disappointing.
November 10th, 2010 at 3:12 PM
I get the weirdest most frightening feeling watching this. Gives me the willies like motherfucker. SFW.

November 10th, 2010 at 3:13 PM
Plus one works for me.
Easiest to implement and prevents Sun Belt from being involved.

I would never ever ever ever fuck lady gaga. Ever. Gross.
November 10th, 2010 at 3:14 PM
Just a quick look. If the BCS had incorporated a plus 1 since the 2003.
2009- Alabama vs TCU, Texas vs Cincy – all teams unbeaten
2008 – Oklahoma vs Alabama, Texas vs Florida – all teams one loss
2007- Ohio state vs Oklahoma, LSU -VT, All teams except OSU with 2 losses, OSU with 1
2006 – OSU/LSU, Florida/Michigan – OSU unbeaten, Florida-Mich one loss, LSU-2
2005 – USC/OSU, Penn State-Texas. Texas/USC unbeaten. OSU 2 losses. PSU-1
2004 USC/Texas, Auburn/Oklahoma. Oklahoma,Auburn,USC all unbeaten
2003- Oklahoma-Michigan, USC/LSU- all teams except Michigan with 1 loss
Tell me again how this would be bad? In today’s college football the likelihood of having two clear cut teams unbeaten like 2002 OSU/Miami and Texas/USC are very remote.
November 10th, 2010 at 3:14 PM
He’s not Al Davis yet. Give the guy a break. He still bangs the Vegas dimes i don’t.
November 10th, 2010 at 3:14 PM
Not sure what USC is doing in there…
November 10th, 2010 at 3:14 PM
This is what I want. Doesn’t work for most of the bright and flashy crowd though.
November 10th, 2010 at 3:15 PM
I’d call bullshit on that if it happened…that’s the one thing I wish the BCS would change and that’s to set a clause that a team that belongs to a conference must win said conference in order to make the title game
November 10th, 2010 at 3:15 PM
Well I’m glad to hear you don’t like the cock, Fetch.
November 10th, 2010 at 3:15 PM

I can’t name a commenter I know is against a plus one. Are there any?
November 10th, 2010 at 3:16 PM
ya sure about that?
November 10th, 2010 at 3:16 PM
Fuck that.
November 10th, 2010 at 3:18 PM
Do you know WHY they favor this? It’s because with the B10 going to 12 teams and a title game next season, the SEC no longer has a ‘birthright’ at the title game under the current system.
It works for me.
November 10th, 2010 at 3:18 PM
Looking at this kids brings up the age old question – would you rather be really smart and not attractive or vice versa?
November 10th, 2010 at 3:20 PM
would you rather be really smart and not attractive or vice versa?
Not even a question that you go with the latter. Only side you won’t be aware of what your missing.
November 10th, 2010 at 3:20 PM
ugh. THESE kids not this.
November 10th, 2010 at 3:20 PM
Attractive and dumber than shit. People have been able to get by on their looks for ages. Ugly people get nothing, no matter how smart they are. No one likes a troll.
November 10th, 2010 at 3:21 PM
Are you stealing from my twitter? haha I think I even used the term birthright. But either way, totally agree…and the other conferences might be getting royally screwed on the Big Ten expansion deal. The Big Ten will now have a case almost every year at having a one-loss team in the title game b/c a championship game could involve a top 5 win for whoever wins the game. Just like the SEC
So we might be left with an SEC/Big Ten title game for years to come
November 10th, 2010 at 3:21 PM
really smart. are you kidding me?
November 10th, 2010 at 3:22 PM
would you rather be really smart and not attractive or vice versa?
I’d rather be really smart and not attractive. I could put those smarts to some sort of money making enterprise, look at Bill Gates’ wife.
November 10th, 2010 at 3:22 PM
Thank goodness I don’t have to choose
November 10th, 2010 at 3:22 PM
I think voters will take care of this and not put LSU in the title game if they don’t win the SEC. In 2007 2 loss LSU hopped 2 loss Georgia for this reason. In 2006 Florida won the SEc, Michigan didn’t win the Big 10 and Florida hopped them in the final poll. In 2008 Oklahoma won the Big 12 title, Texas didn’t, both had one loss and Texas BEAT Oklahoma and Oklahoma still hopped them the final week.
We won’t have a Nebraska in 2001 situation any longer. The only way I think LSU plays for the title is if all of these happen A)they win out, B) Auburn loses to Alabama AND the SEC title game, C)Oregon loses, D) the voters really really really hate to see Boise/TCU title game and E) they disrespect one loss Nebraska or OK State.
That’s a lot to have happen.
November 10th, 2010 at 3:24 PM
Brains bring money, money bring bitches. I’ll take being smart.
November 10th, 2010 at 3:24 PM
To clarify the Bill Gates’ wife part, she isn’t awful looking. If you are smart, rich and unattractive you get tail (or you pay for top quality tail).
November 10th, 2010 at 3:24 PM
fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life
November 10th, 2010 at 3:25 PM
If youre a guy, you can be ugly but smart enough to make lots of money in turn making you attractive. Females need to be hot.
Yeah, life’s a bitch like that.
November 10th, 2010 at 3:26 PM
Being really smart is no guarantee that you’d be rich – maybe be a professor or maybe you’d be making someone else rich. To be rich, you have to include persuasiveness, being able to meet and greet, salesmanship, ruthlessness and business smarts.
So i’d go attractiveness – now if it was between rich and attractive…. I’d say rich for a man and attractive for a woman

There aren’t a lot of miserable dumb hot people.
November 10th, 2010 at 3:27 PM
plus, you’re more likely to go insane if you’re smart.
being attractive means life is a blissful, albeit empty existence.
im sticking with smart tho.
November 10th, 2010 at 3:27 PM
oklahoma also made it after getting pasted by k st in the b12 title game. was 03 or 04 i think. hopefully past that though
November 10th, 2010 at 3:27 PM
The downside though is that the loser of the championship game rarely goes to a BCS Bowl even if it is deserved because of the late season loss.
November 10th, 2010 at 3:28 PM
lolz. very true.
November 10th, 2010 at 3:28 PM
rarely? i actually think it happens quite a bit.
UGA, florida, alabama, nebraska, oklahoma all have gone to BCS games after losing their champ game.
November 10th, 2010 at 3:29 PM
I would agree with you if we weren’t talking about some of the biggest traveling fan bases in the country in OSU/Michigan/Nebraska/Wisky/Iowa
November 10th, 2010 at 3:30 PM
Forgot about PSU
November 10th, 2010 at 3:30 PM
I’m a girl, so hot and dumb works for me. Easier to be rich being super hot than super smart.
November 10th, 2010 at 3:30 PM
Debating on whether or not to be good looking or smart. Damnit, is it Friday yet?
November 10th, 2010 at 3:32 PM
Yeah that was one of the last years using the old formula. If they used the new one Oklahoma would have been 3rd and USC would have played LSU for the title. I would be SHOCKED if a one loss LSU plays for the title without winning the SEC. I just can’t see enough human voters getting them to a top 3 spot.
November 10th, 2010 at 3:33 PM
Not at the expense of better teams. The third-best SEC team is better than the best MAC school. Same goes for Pac 10, Big 10, Big 12 and the ACC. Not sure about the Big East.
November 10th, 2010 at 3:35 PM
This. If you were super smart, maybe you’re just a nerd who spends too much time being socially awkward to get ahead in life. Nerds get pushed around all the time. No one really messes with hot people.
November 10th, 2010 at 3:57 PM
I can’t believe this drum got beaten again on a 3 year old Wetzel playoff model. What a joke.
2 teams playing each other for the title is a 2 team playoff. A Plus One is a 4 team playoff. I’m all for a playoff, just not a stupid one that involves teeny tiny schools who aren’t even among the top 40 in the country, ever.
November 10th, 2010 at 4:11 PM
Nothing could’ve saved that year. LSU-VT would have been a rematch of a 48-7 game. Georgia and USC (2 losses each) were arguably the two hottest teams at the end of the year. Kansas had only 1 loss. Hawaii had 0.
A plus-one could have (unlikely) robbed us of USC-Texas in ’05. A plus-one in ’06 would have included a team that didnt win its division (LSU). A plus-one in ’04 would have made Auburn fans but would’ve ENRAGED Cal fans if Texas got the nod due to Mack Brown’s politicking. It would have been the in ’03, ’08, and probably this year as well.

This is exactly right until the last sentence. I don’t understand everyone who prefers a two team play-off to a 16 team play-off because they think that teams 12-16 won’t be the most worthy. Talk about perfect being the enemy of the good.
Having teams 12-16 stink is better than having them be legit threats if you want the regular season to “still mean something.” And letting in the champs from these confrences will ensure that there are some crappy teams because sometimes the TCU conference champs will be decent and sometimes the MAC champ will be good but they will likely never all be good together.
