Ballin’: Paul Millsap Beat the Heat
Utah 116, Miami 114, OT: The Heat got Millsap’d. The Jazz forward exploded for 46 points – including a eight points in the final 12 seconds of regulation, a buzzer-beater to force OT and 3-of-3 from deep (he had made two 3-pointers in his first four years in the league) – as Utah rallied from down eight with :37 left to stun the Heat in overtime after Deron Williams had fouled out. The Heat led by 22 in the second quarter, but must have gone to sleep thinking about Boston’s visit Thursday. The Jazz relentless comeback was sparked by Williams (21 points, 14 assists) and Millsap (33 points in the 2nd half and overtime), and complete after two Francisco Elson free throws with less than a second left. That stuff about Chris Bosh not being tough enough inside? It continues to bubble up. LeBron’s triple double (20-14-11) will be forgotten because he was an afterthought in overtime.
Indiana 144, Denver 113: Not that much of a surprise. After all, we called it. The Pacers led by 10 at the half, then made their first 20 shots of the 3rd quarter (!?!) and blew out the Nuggets. Denver lost a tough one Monday and must have left their defense in Chicago. Here’s video of that unbelievable third quarter.
Cleveland 93, New Jersey 91: Two lottery-bound teams. One team’s bench made six baskets (New Jersey); the other scored 52 points.
New Orleans 101, LA Clippers 82: The Hornets still haven’t lost. The Paper Clips, with Baron Davis limited to 10 minutes, and Eric Gordon and Randy Foye inactive, never got close, and fell to 1-7. On the bright side, rookie Al-Farouq Aminu had 20 points in 29 minutes. It is nice to see Chris Paul healthy again and breaking ankles. The one above is from Friday. And before you say this hot start might be enough to prevent him from wanting to be traded … let’s re-visit that after the first round of the playoffs.
LA Lakers 99, Minnesota 94: Kobe scored 33 (on 28 shots) and the Lakers are 8-0. Great line to describe Kevin Love’s 23-point, 24-rebound effort: “Biggest night for him since watching Eminem deck Vinnie Chase.”
Milwaukee 107, NY Knicks 90: Blasted Knicks. This one was over in the first quarter, after which the Bucks led, 41-19. That’s two losses in a row after the 3-2 start. New York continues to jack 3-pointers even when they’re not falling (5-for-19). The highlight appeared to be Andrew Bogut vs. Amare Stoudemire (it dates back to Bogut’s injury last year). Or perhaps this Bill Walker facial on Bogut.

You’re first place…CLEVELAND…CAVALIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERS!

Paul Milsap. Legend.
November 10th, 2010 at 10:33 AM
Your (fuck)
November 10th, 2010 at 10:33 AM
I don’t follow the NBA as closely as most people in here, but how soon before it is safe to say that the Heat might not be as good as advertised?
November 10th, 2010 at 10:35 AM
calling it now: Beat (and cover) vs. Boston Thursday
November 10th, 2010 at 10:35 AM
Wow, the Heat suck.
November 10th, 2010 at 10:36 AM
I’m not convinced of this at all. Cleveland looks fairly competitive so far; they have as good a shot at the playoffs as most of the other bottom feeders in the East.
November 10th, 2010 at 10:36 AM
I’m pretty sure Milsap is the reason I’m first in my league now. Go Milsap!
November 10th, 2010 at 10:36 AM
Way too soon. What is really funny was that there was a sequence where D Wade was in takeover mode. Then LeBorn got the ball and did his patented bull doze to the rim move, missed the lay up. They’ll figure it out sooner or later. Bosh needs to toughen the fuck up if he is going to be LeBron’s pick man when they are running high-low.
November 10th, 2010 at 10:37 AM
Eddie House with the last shot, again. first vs New Orleans when they lost on the road
November 10th, 2010 at 10:37 AM
Mike Miller’s return is only going to help the Heat so much. They really need to get some help inside or just screw it and put Bosh at center and LeBron at PF.
November 10th, 2010 at 10:37 AM
Not exactly a world class boxout by Udonis Haslem at about 1.27 of that video.
November 10th, 2010 at 10:38 AM
Gonna be tough to put on weight during the season. He’s a rail. Completely overhyped.
November 10th, 2010 at 10:38 AM
They will definately improve once Wade and James figure each other out, but they will have trouble with elite bigs all year. I’d also like to point out that Christina Bosh makes $14.5 million/yr.
November 10th, 2010 at 10:38 AM
Fear the Deer
November 10th, 2010 at 10:38 AM
That was more out of desperation. .4 seconds left and he has the quickest release on the team. Heat can’t be choking games away like that, but they won’t get too many nights with guys playing as bonkers a Millsap did last night. That was just insane.
November 10th, 2010 at 10:39 AM
They’ll figure it out sooner or later. Bosh needs to toughen the fuck up if he is going to be LeBron’s pick man when they are running high-low.
I hear you and theoretically, they should. Problem is, you have 3 guys who all are accustomed to being “the man” could it be that maybe just maybe this mentality might just be too hard to grasp in the throes of a game?
November 10th, 2010 at 10:39 AM
I was saying this before the season. They have enough talent and a good mix of guys whereas a lot of teams have the talent but a bad mix (Pistons, Suns, Houston).
There should be a good scrum for the final 3 playoff spots in the East.
November 10th, 2010 at 10:39 AM
calling it now: Beat (and cover) vs. Boston Thursday
what’s the Heat’s record against good teams so far this year? 1-3? Are you basing it on the pounding they gave Minnesota, or how they twice handled the Nets?
I also like how Lebron has already had several chances to take a game winner and somebody else always has.
November 10th, 2010 at 10:40 AM
Yeah, but even buffing up won’t helkp him. Tyson Chandler and Marcus Camby are sticks and they play with more huevos then Bosh does. Guys like that would have NEVER let the other team get that tip in to send it into overtime.
November 10th, 2010 at 10:40 AM
Bosh needs to toughen the fuck up
So true, but sadly, they will be saying the same thing 2-3 years from now.
November 10th, 2010 at 10:41 AM
i guess Blake Griffin didnt have a good game, left out of Ballin
November 10th, 2010 at 10:41 AM
Over 29.5 wins = Free Money
November 10th, 2010 at 10:42 AM
Bogut is good at contesting shots. I know that guy threw that one down, but he got the one in the bottom video.
November 10th, 2010 at 10:43 AM
The Cavs did me well to win 9 cents, rocking them again tonight…the push towards a dollar continues
November 10th, 2010 at 10:44 AM
This. Bosh has skills but they aren’t suited to doing the dirty work. There is a reason the Raptors were killed on the interior for YEARS. He’s not an average, at best, on ball defender but his help defence is truly atrocious. He doesn’t cover up for mistakes and he’s not willing to throw himself in front of someone driving to the basket.
November 10th, 2010 at 10:44 AM
True. He’s just there to party with Young Weezy.
I wouldn’t mind seeing the clip where he dribbled it off his knee on a fast break.
November 10th, 2010 at 10:45 AM
The Heat are the Magic’s only loss.
November 10th, 2010 at 10:45 AM
Young Moola baaaaaby.
November 10th, 2010 at 10:46 AM
Guys like that would have NEVER let the other team get that tip in to send it into overtime.
he was lackadaisically guarding Kirilenko outside.
November 10th, 2010 at 10:47 AM
The Heat are the Magic’s only loss.
I know, they’re 1-3 against good teams, and they’ve shellacked 4 bad ones, or 3 bad ones, and one twice.
November 10th, 2010 at 10:48 AM
The Heat are the Magic’s only loss
they caught the Magic on a back to back, but they still whooped em
November 10th, 2010 at 10:49 AM
Bill Walker is on the Knicks? He was fun to watch at K-State.
November 10th, 2010 at 10:49 AM
He was, but when the shot went up, he didn’t even look at all worried about getting to the rim. He was even in a position to block/contest the put back and didn’t look like he felt inclined to do so. Soft.
November 10th, 2010 at 10:50 AM
Yeah, been in NY since last season.
November 10th, 2010 at 10:50 AM
He was, but when the shot went up, he didn’t even look at all worried about getting to the rim. He was even in a position to block/contest the put back and didn’t look like he felt inclined to do so. Soft.
he started walking the other way. weak
November 10th, 2010 at 10:51 AM
I don’t follow the NBA as closely as most people in here, but how soon before it is safe to say that the Heat might not be as good as advertised?
It happened Opening Night
/62-63 wins
November 10th, 2010 at 10:51 AM
What was that, the Heat’s home opener? That would have been a tough night for anybody.
November 10th, 2010 at 10:53 AM
yea it was jersey, still the Magic looked like shit that night
November 10th, 2010 at 10:54 AM
My question is Dwight seeing how all these other Big Men are going off and the Heat and just licking his chops at other shot at them. It’s early & stats might not back it up but from the eyeball test, that session with the Dream seems to be showing some fruit.
November 10th, 2010 at 10:55 AM
if lebron doesn’t win a ring or eclipse the win total the cavs got the past two years, are the heat a failure for this year or do they have a window of like 2-3 years?
November 10th, 2010 at 10:55 AM
I watched the 4th quarter of the Heat and Jazz game when Miami went up I think 5 with about 35 or 40 seconds left the announcers were pretty much looking forward to the game versus Boston saying how it would be alot better to go into the game with a 6-2 record than a 5-3 record and then Milsap took over.
November 10th, 2010 at 10:57 AM
Little bit of A. Little bit of B. A whole lot of pointing and laughing though. They won’t make it to the Finals this year, that is for damn sure.
November 10th, 2010 at 10:59 AM
That was awesome watching Millsap rain threes on the Miami bitches.
Also, TBL, you often give Kobe crap for scoring 25-30 on 20-22 shots. Why not say anything about LeBron scoring 20 on 18 shots?
November 10th, 2010 at 10:59 AM
Oh, and that will be the city of Cleveland’s last win over a team based in NJ for the next couple of days. Enjoy it while it lasts.
November 10th, 2010 at 10:59 AM
@readerm- he is off to a great start this season. hope he stays healthy and it continues
November 10th, 2010 at 11:00 AM
Eclipsing the win total of the Cavs the last two years seems like a must. All we heard the last 3 or 4 years was that LeBron had zero supporting cast and once he got his Pippen that would be it. I never thought this to be the case.
I think a lot of people still expect the Lakers to win the title so I think there is certainly a window.
November 10th, 2010 at 11:01 AM
Why not say anything about LeBron scoring 20 on 18 shots?
triple double, that’s why. Triple Double. Check my Stats. Triple Double.
November 10th, 2010 at 11:01 AM
one afc east team down, three more to go.
/team mangenius
November 10th, 2010 at 11:01 AM
The Heat will prob be their most dangerous next year when after they had a year to get used to each other but most importantly if the CBA still holds it, the mid level exception to go pick up a decent big on the market
Btw how stupid was Josh McRoberts last night for messing up with a perfect 20 for 20 3rd Qt with only like 2 secs left in the Qtr.
November 10th, 2010 at 11:01 AM
Blake Griffin had a pretty cool dunk last night.
November 10th, 2010 at 11:02 AM
Also, TBL, you often give Kobe crap for scoring 25-30 on 20-22 shots. Why not say anything about LeBron scoring 20 on 18 shots?
prob the same reason Blake Griffin and his 10pt performance didnt get mentioned
November 10th, 2010 at 11:03 AM
But what should he do? Make more than 5 of 18 from the floor? Should he not be more aggressive on d when the other team is making a rally? Should he not let Paul Millsap jizz in his eye from 28 feet? What should he do?
November 10th, 2010 at 11:03 AM
Not if the Bucks were the Heat.
November 10th, 2010 at 11:04 AM
I think they can certainly get to the Finals. While they don’t matchup well with Howard, it’s not like the Magic matchup well with Wade and LeBron. And the Magic can’t exploit the Heat’s PG deficiency either.
Thus, the Heat need to face Atlanta in round 2 and hope that Orlando knocks out Boston.
November 10th, 2010 at 11:04 AM
Blake Griffin had a pretty cool dunk last night
and1, left handed. nice
November 10th, 2010 at 11:04 AM
this is what im kinda interested in…if player salaries get slashed and the cap reduced, what effect will current contracts have on the cap? will there be a grandfather clause in there to reduce the impact of having 3 guys with a max salary? and if so, how will that effect the heat getting a good supporting cast?
interesting stuff.
November 10th, 2010 at 11:04 AM
Didn’t you read? Braylon wants to deep dick the Browns. Badly. You have been warned.
November 10th, 2010 at 11:05 AM
Should he not let Paul Millsap jizz in his eye from 28 feet?
lol, always used “eyepatch” when hitting a shot in someones eye
November 10th, 2010 at 11:06 AM
+1 clay, +2 jersey
November 10th, 2010 at 11:07 AM
the only thing braylon wants to deep dick is male ass. im not worried about a guy who’s not good playing for a coach who lets him suck every swinging dick he sees.
browns 420, jets 3.
November 10th, 2010 at 11:07 AM
Dr. Tom: I have Boston making it. They are very, very deep. I still think they are the class of the East.
November 10th, 2010 at 11:07 AM
Like UGH, UGH, UGH!
November 10th, 2010 at 11:07 AM
I’m expecting him to have a big big game, he really wants to stick it to C-land. That said, Go Browns.
November 10th, 2010 at 11:07 AM
when did it become ok for a dude to pork another dude in the butthole in an attempt to assert athletic dominance?
/NTTAWWT
//just wondering
November 10th, 2010 at 11:09 AM
I’m not a big NBA guy either, so why is lebron always getting crapped on for wanting to play on a super team and not wanting to win it all by himself, but Dwayne Wade was been pretty criticism free for wanting to play with him? Guys were all summer saying they would never allow lebron to go to their team, but when Wade says he wants the heat to sign lebron no one attacks him? And if it’s because Wade has already won in Miami before lebron, well he did it with Shaq like Kobe did in LA and after shaq left LA Kobe had to prove to everyone that he can win by himself? Why does Wade not have to prove that to anyone like Kobe had to?
Like I said I am not big NBA guy either, so maybe I’m just missing something?
November 10th, 2010 at 11:09 AM
stick WHAT to cleveland? the fact that people had the nerve to be salty when he dropped MULTIPLE wide open passes and didn’t give a flying fuck about the team when he was here?
if anyone has a beef, it’s the city at braylon, not the other way around.
typical michigan egotism. disgusting.
November 10th, 2010 at 11:09 AM
I think Braylon said he wanted to deep dick the lead actor from Meet the Browns.
November 10th, 2010 at 11:10 AM
I think it started when the Browns began showing signs of life.
November 10th, 2010 at 11:10 AM
Dr. Tom: I have Boston making it. They are very, very deep. I still think they are the class of the East.
tough to argue with you on that Jersey. lets hope this prediction is like the memphis 2009 one
November 10th, 2010 at 11:10 AM
no idea tho i’ve always hated d-wade.
/team mavs
November 10th, 2010 at 11:10 AM
Interesting choice of scores. Because you definitely have to be hitting something extra sticky to think that the Browns are going to win Sunday. Gonna be dougies and nachos all day, Sunday. The only good Brown will be the massive shit Rex takes at half time because he is so giddy.
November 10th, 2010 at 11:11 AM

Its amazing that with a new CBA coming up so many GMS gave out bad contracts over the summer or just recently Mke Conley getting 45 million from the Grizz.

November 10th, 2010 at 11:12 AM
Good read from the LA Times. Simmons irks me more often than not, but he does provide good hoops links.
November 10th, 2010 at 11:12 AM
Kobe’s crossover pull up 3 on Beasley was nasty last night. Looked like Kobe from 5 years ago. Very much more explosive too than I thought he would be.
November 10th, 2010 at 11:12 AM
Oh, my Memphis 2010-11 pass was renewed. They can make the playoffs this year. I’m telling you!
November 10th, 2010 at 11:13 AM
Why does Wade not have to prove that to anyone like Kobe had to?
because you couldn’t make an even halfway conceivable case that Wade hasn’t already been the best guy on a championship team. You could easily make the case that the NBA is rigged and that’s why the Mavs lost, but not that Wade wasn’t 100% the best guy on that team.
November 10th, 2010 at 11:13 AM
it’s funny that the jets focus so much on bullshit under rex while wasting boatloads and boatloads of talent while their former coach, when not saddled with a shitty GM, maximizes every last drop of talent on the browns roster.
grabass hour in the middle of practice does not a super bowl champion make.
November 10th, 2010 at 11:13 AM
Oh, my Memphis 2010-11 pass was renewed. They can make the playoffs this year. I’m telling you!
cursed cleveland still believes that Memphis won that Gasol swap.
November 10th, 2010 at 11:14 AM
That’s asking a lot of the old guys. And I’m not just talking about the big 3 but the two O’Neal’s as well. Love Rondo though.
November 10th, 2010 at 11:15 AM
this is what im kinda interested in…if player salaries get slashed and the cap reduced, what effect will current contracts have on the cap? will there be a grandfather clause in there to reduce the impact of having 3 guys with a max salary?
Spencer, I know you are anti-hockey. But I think a few things in the NHL’s current CBA would work in the NBA. Examples, restrictions on entry level compensation, one player can only comprise a certain % of the team’s cap as well as the escrow where a % of each players pay is withheld during the year and either paid out at year-end or returned to the league depending on hockey related revenues.
I’m really interested to see how they NBA deals with existing contracts should they go to a true hard cap.
November 10th, 2010 at 11:16 AM
I turned off the Heat/Jazz as the heat hit the Free throws to go up 8 to watch Sons of Anarchy, that will teach me. Never turn off a game when Milsap is playing.
November 10th, 2010 at 11:16 AM
Hey, they practice very hard. Everyone on the team cares about winning. They know what they are supposed to do. Sanchez is slowly letting the coaching staff know exactly what the offense needs to succeed. You will get to witness it firsthand Sunday.
November 10th, 2010 at 11:17 AM
geeezeus…im not anti-hockey, im anti-early regular season hockey talk that hijacks footbaw threads, that’s all.
and i think that the NHL’s CBA is a pretty good model for the NBA.
personally, i like the PGA’s model the best…you don’t make shit on the course/field unless you earn it.
November 10th, 2010 at 11:17 AM
Do the T-Wolves go hi-lo with Love and Beasley? It seems like Love is a good enough shooter and passer that he could play the high post and on the perimeter and Beasley should be able to dominate any other SF underneath. A lot of could and should, I know.
/sorry for the T-Wolves question
November 10th, 2010 at 11:17 AM
Kobe averaging 8 minutes per game less than last year + no ball this summer will be a major factor come playoff time…
November 10th, 2010 at 11:18 AM
what’s that? sanchez letting them know that if they want to succeed he should be handing off?
November 10th, 2010 at 11:18 AM

I’m not sure how this should have been responded to, but arguing that they practice hard probably wasn’t the answer.
November 10th, 2010 at 11:18 AM
As long as the bench shows up like they’ve been doing for the past two seasons, I think they are fine. Also, still no Kendrick Perkins. Him getting healthy will do wonders for that rotation. The front line, even though old, is still massive and deep.
November 10th, 2010 at 11:19 AM
geeezeus…im not anti-hockey, im anti-early regular season hockey talk that hijacks footbaw threads, that’s all.
Fair enough.
and i think that the NHL’s CBA is a pretty good model for the NBA.
If only the NHL GM’s and Owners didn’t spend the years after the institution of the cap trying to find ways around it.

Just watch. MexiGod will reign supreme. In a couple days, you’ll have your shiny newcommenter name saying “Well if they are supposed to be so good, they would have beat the Browns by more. Oh Hillis, I want you deep inside me. Bengals are faggy. Really, we lost to OSU, Jr.? Fuck you SC, your a moron.” And I will laugh. Because you are funny. And you will also have a funny new commenter name.
November 10th, 2010 at 11:22 AM
WTF is Deron Williams wearing in his picture on the right side of the screen?
November 10th, 2010 at 11:22 AM
They’re just way too young right now for anything to matter. (Although Kevin Love plays like a veteran). For as much as Beasley should be dominant, he has a horrendous shot selection (41% for a guy that can beat anyone that’s defending him?). He’s also gotta be the worst 6’10 rebounder in the league.
November 10th, 2010 at 11:23 AM
lol…now THAT’S funny.
November 10th, 2010 at 11:23 AM
Spencer was saying they don’t. I said they did. Isn’t that how you argue against something that is false? Tell them what is true? Or was I just supposed to agree? I’m confused.
November 10th, 2010 at 11:24 AM
That and it’s all so effortless for him and his team right now. I watch the Heat and they’re all going balls to the walls, while the Lakers are just getting layups and open threes with good ball movement and execution.
November 10th, 2010 at 11:25 AM
I mean, of all the things that are going to happen, that last one is a lock.
November 10th, 2010 at 11:26 AM
im not seeing that.
after years of letting kobe go at you whenever he pleases, im pretty sure it’s a hotdog/hallway situation. effortless, indeed.

They only beat the T-Wolves by five…at home. Not exactly effortless.

I don’t see this either. I see a lot of Harlem Globetrotters lazy basketball happening. Lack of focus seems to be one of their main problems.

Phil took it easy on Rambis and was using experimental lineups that he wouldn’t in a “real” game. Lakers could have won by 50 if desired. No need to expend extra energy.

Did you watch the game? They were in cruise control the entire game.
As for by balls to the walls comment, i’m not talking in a good team way, it’s a lot of one-on-one LeBron and DWade trying to prove something on almost every offensive possession (now defense, that’s another story).

yea…heat D has been pretty solid. lebron was monstrous for seemingly the entire 2nd and 3rd quarters.

Wow that Millsap sequence was insane. Impressive.

he was a beast on the boards at k-state, wasn’t he? i’m shocked at how low his rebounding numbers are in the NBA
November 10th, 2010 at 11:47 AM
It’s partly because he’s not 6-10.
November 10th, 2010 at 11:52 AM
He’s been moved to SF in the NBA which takes him out of position for a lot of rebounds. He should still be better than he is though.
