Week 10 Waiver Wire: Scrambling for Quarterbacks
Philip Rivers, Drew Brees, and Aaron Rodgers are all on byes this week. Oh, and Jason Campbell/Bruce Gradkowski too. So, many teams are going to be replacing a starter this week. If you have somebody like Ben Roethlisberger or Eli Manning in reserve, congratulations. For those that don’t, let’s take a look at your best options.
I’m going to handle this week a little different and focus on the quarterbacks, since there aren’t many key injuries of note, and I’ve probably mentioned anyone worth picking up at other positions. I’ll just focus more on good matchups among guys who are not automatic starters at other positions, and if those guys happen to be free agents in your league, go get them. Note: Don’t forget this is the first Thursday night game, so if your league stops transactions at the first game, you will need to make moves by Thursday afternoon.
Quarterback: The best matchup is in the Houston/Jacksonville game. These two teams will compete to see who can be furthest away from a receiver when a catch is made. Start either. If David Garrard is available in your league, which depending on league size is I suppose possible if not likely, he should be target #1.
Ryan Fitzpatrick and Josh Freeman would be my next choice among guys who may not be every week starters. Fitzpatrick gets Detroit at home, while Freeman is home to Carolina. Matt Cassel would be next in line, getting a bad Denver defense on the road. Sam Bradford is at San Fran, and is an okay matchup.
After that, it gets a little dicey, and you will need to monitor the news about who is going to start. The Seahawks/Cardinals clash is likely to produce points just because both defenses are struggling. If you are desperate, Derek Anderson is a play this week. Charlie Whitehurst didn’t show much against the tough Giants defense, but should fare better in this one. Whoever plays for the Lions will have a great matchup, but things are up in the air. I have little confidence in Drew Stanton, but for a desperation start, you couldn’t ask for a better draw.
Running Back: Jahvid Best is getting healthier, the team will lean on him more, and the matchup couldn’t be better this week. I know DeAngelo Williams is persona non grata right now, but watch the injury news. If he is a go, with Johnathan Stewart out and the Bucs’ rush defense looming, he is startable this week. If he doesn’t play, then Mike Goodson becomes a one week starting option against Tampa Bay. LeGarrette Blount is a good option in the same game.
The Chiefs duo of Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones gets Denver. Charles is a must start (someone let Haley and Weis know this, please), while Jones is a decent flex start based on matchup. Cedric Benson is a start this week against Indy.
On the other side, Peyton Hillis will continue to try to walk on Lake Erie, but will do so against a much tougher run defense. Avoid the Patriots duo of Green-Ellis and Woodhead against the stingy Steelers defense.
Wide Receiver: Start receivers in the Texans-Jaguars game. That means Mike Sims-Walker and Mike Thomas, along with Jacoby Jones and Kevin Walter (and of course, that Andre Johnson guy). Start any Giants receiver, including Mario Manningham. The Buffalo duo of Stevie Johnson and Lee Evans are good starts against Detroit. Derrick Mason should be productive against Atlanta. After a couple of rough matchups, people may be down on Mike Williams of Seattle again, but he is a start option this week.
Tight End: Marcedes Lewis against Houston is the matchup start of the week. Houston is turr-ible against tight ends (well, everyone) and brought Randy McMichael back from the dead last week. Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski are starts at Pittsburgh. Joel Dreesen is a waiver wire option for Houston. Tony Moeaki should get his share of looks off play action in Denver.

I have a hot mess at WR…I need to start 2 of these 3:
Mike Williams (TB)
Mario Manningham
Santonio Holmes
Any advice?
November 9th, 2010 at 7:26 PM
so happy I’m playing the 7-1 team that has Rivers. A shot at Victory!

I think about if this was some other religion, say really devout orthodox jews or christians and there was a big enough population of them in a certain area to warrant the discussion of something like this happening in say a public pool, would people raise so much hell
November 9th, 2010 at 7:40 PM
Religion is broken I dont pay attention to it.
November 9th, 2010 at 7:41 PM
Williams a must start over those two. They both have good matchups but I’d probably lean toward Holmes.
November 9th, 2010 at 7:42 PM
Manningham’s going to get some catches and he hasnt broken one in a while. I’d give him a shot. With the clusterfuck in dallas, I’m sure manningham will grab a td and a bunch of yards
November 9th, 2010 at 7:44 PM
So about the Feds getting involved in the Cam Newton mess…
November 9th, 2010 at 7:45 PM
Holmes and Williams.

November 9th, 2010 at 7:54 PM
No mention of Vince Young in this post? I gotta think he belongs at least in that Fitzpatrick/Freeman/Cassel/Bradford paragraph..
November 9th, 2010 at 7:57 PM
I’m with the future senator from the fine state of New Jersey. One hour per week set aside for any female student who wants to partake seems pretty reasonable.

Lil Wayne is my religion.
November 9th, 2010 at 8:02 PM
I dare anyone to squeeze one out to this.
November 9th, 2010 at 8:03 PM
This 30/30 is gonna depress the shit out of me.
November 9th, 2010 at 8:05 PM
No rubbers dude!
November 9th, 2010 at 8:06 PM
I mean, is this like just a dare? Or is this one of those “I’ll give you 100 bucks if you…” things?
November 9th, 2010 at 8:06 PM
Didn’t Harvard do the same shit for an entire gym? Private schools.
November 9th, 2010 at 8:07 PM
I dont see a problem with an hour a week. Its not like they’re demanding a separate pool.
November 9th, 2010 at 8:08 PM
Just a dare. I would squeeze one out to this for $20
November 9th, 2010 at 8:08 PM
We just pooped all over your grenade, TBL.

November 9th, 2010 at 8:09 PM
David Stern shouldn’t be allowed to say shit about the financial situation until he cuts ties with the WNBA.
November 9th, 2010 at 8:11 PM
My god. I’m going batty in the eyes. I swear I read the headline on that GW thing as “Under Gawd” which made me chuckle before I realized it wasn’t what it said. Then, for reasons unknowable, I thought Jose was making a comment about the NBA and referencing David Shula. I could use a fifth of bourbon right about now
November 9th, 2010 at 8:19 PM
I had to pick him up. my one team is fucked anyways, so I’m just hoping for no negative points.
Drew Stanton, starting NFL qb for my fave team. never thought I would see the day.
November 9th, 2010 at 8:20 PM
With the clusterfuck in dallas, I’m sure manningham will grab a td and a bunch of yards
Usually Steve Smith ruins them, but now it’s all Hakeem Nicks. But yeah, any receiver against that secondary. I’m really hoping Keith Brooking gets waived today.
November 9th, 2010 at 8:22 PM
Ha! You should have seen me April 25th, 2009. I had to watch a Trojan with 16 college starts become the face of my football team. Not so bad now in retrospect.
November 9th, 2010 at 8:22 PM
Seriously. Has it turned a profit in any season yet?
November 9th, 2010 at 8:24 PM
There will be none of the losing to LeMoyne this year for the Cuse. And you heard it here first. Scoop Jardine will be first team Big East. Man, he has gotten 500 percent better since he got to Syracuse.
November 9th, 2010 at 8:25 PM
this Dupree kid reminds me of Randy Moss +15/20 pounds. absolute beast

Not even close. Not one team. Luckily for them the NBA subsidizes the owners. Unfortunately for me the NBA subsidizes the owners.

November 9th, 2010 at 8:31 PM
Knicks are getting ran the fuck out of the gym right now.
November 9th, 2010 at 8:36 PM
His jumper is so good right now that his game is pretty complete. Can’t believe I’m saying that about a kid that was fat and shooting the ball like Manute Bol freshman year (RIP)
As long as Colin Falls isn’t back, Cuse should be ok.
November 9th, 2010 at 8:38 PM
That’s my bro right there. Housemates our Senior year. Going to his wedding next summer.
November 9th, 2010 at 8:46 PM
The WNBA really is just an expensive-seeming PR gambit for the league. I don’t really know the total expenditures on it but I’d be willing to bet you could fund the entire league with the money the NBA saves contracting the Knicks
November 9th, 2010 at 8:46 PM
That one game at the Dome in 2007 was the best shooting display I’ve seen any college team put together. They made everything the first 30 minutes.
November 9th, 2010 at 8:49 PM
Marcus Dupree was a monster
November 9th, 2010 at 8:49 PM
Couldn’t miss. But I don’t think that comes close to Kyle McAlarney just going FUCKING BONKERS the next year. Remember that?
November 9th, 2010 at 8:57 PM
RIP Houston Comets. WNBA four time champions
/wanking motion

November 9th, 2010 at 9:12 PM
Scoop Jardine> Keith “Dean of Glass Jaws” Jardine
This football game is awful and is gonna cost me 6 cents.
November 9th, 2010 at 9:12 PM
Just caught about 15 minutes of this 30 for 30. This is rooooough.
November 9th, 2010 at 9:14 PM
Oh yeah, what was it 9 of 10 from 3? Something crazy. He singlehandedly kept Cuse out of the tournament. Syracuse played their best offensive game in weeks and everytime they had a chance to get it under 10 McAlarney would hit another 3. And most of them were from well beyond 3 point range. He was sick. He did that in Maui too the next year.
November 9th, 2010 at 9:14 PM
The cure? Miss Hawaii’s newest pictures that she put up. Whoa.
November 9th, 2010 at 9:16 PM
rs27: That was just breath taking to watch. But don’t worry, I’ll let you recant the numerous times Warrick was able to silence an entire ND crowd with a stupid nasty dunk.
November 9th, 2010 at 9:19 PM
Am I wrong in thinking that soundgarden broke up once audioslave came about? Noticed they are on Conan tonight.
November 9th, 2010 at 9:20 PM
They need to do a 30 for 30 on the Baylor murder.
November 9th, 2010 at 9:21 PM
at some point some NBA team should hire Danny Manning to work with their big men because he is clearly some sort of miracle worker.
November 9th, 2010 at 9:25 PM
Marcus Dupree was a bad man.
November 9th, 2010 at 9:30 PM
man, it’s a morgue in here tonight.
November 9th, 2010 at 9:33 PM
great Jazz-Heat game on NBATV. Jazz just came back from 22 down to take a lead with 6 min left.
/dwade 3 puts Heat back up
//for anybody watching, that was not a flagrant, imo
November 9th, 2010 at 9:34 PM
james jones took that foul as if he were the same build as me. and he was fouled by little ronnie price.
November 9th, 2010 at 9:36 PM
I was right. I HATE seeing people tear up their knees.
November 9th, 2010 at 9:37 PM
This 30 for 30 is brutally depressing.
November 9th, 2010 at 9:40 PM
Lebron with a J-Kidd style triple-double.
November 9th, 2010 at 9:42 PM
So the Reverend that was “advising” or whatever Dupree, pretty shady it seems. Didn’t he say there were things “they’d probably do different”? That guy probably stole most if not all of his money. Just as sad to me as Dupree not making it for whatever reasons.
November 9th, 2010 at 9:46 PM
This is why I dont fuck with church. Rev. is gonna try to take all my money and might try to fuck me.
November 9th, 2010 at 9:56 PM
Utah sure is trying hard to pull off a miracle.
November 9th, 2010 at 9:57 PM
Wtf happened to the Nuggets tonight
November 9th, 2010 at 9:58 PM
PAUL MILLSAP IS RAINING THREES
November 9th, 2010 at 10:01 PM
jesus, the Heat are super un-clutch right now. they’re begging Utah to take this game.
November 9th, 2010 at 10:02 PM
So, Barry Switzer is pretty much a dick.
November 9th, 2010 at 10:03 PM
Yeah, fuck that guy. He was the one that talked Marcus into leaving Oklahoma. Instead of being a father figure/mentor that looked out for Marcus’ best interests he basically did what was best for him.
November 9th, 2010 at 10:04 PM
PAUL MILLSAP TIES IT WITH A TIP-IN.
holy shit what a game.
November 9th, 2010 at 10:04 PM
nice millsap…
November 9th, 2010 at 10:04 PM
Milsap is fucking up the Heat. Bosh just watched the whole thing happen. Fuck that guy.
November 9th, 2010 at 10:07 PM
I’m playing against the guy in front of me for first. He has Rivers and Stafford. Being the dick that I am I picked up Jarrard the only QB available.
This is a completely legitimate move.
November 9th, 2010 at 10:07 PM
headed to OT. Millsap is 19-26 for 44 pts, including 3-3 on 3-ptrs (all in the final 28 seconds) and the tying tip-in at the buzzer.
November 9th, 2010 at 10:08 PM
bosh getting owned.
November 9th, 2010 at 10:09 PM
Wade in fuck this shit mode.
November 9th, 2010 at 10:09 PM
holy shit what a dunk by Wade
November 9th, 2010 at 10:10 PM
that has to be the best description i’ve ever heard
November 9th, 2010 at 10:10 PM
Haha. Perfect timing.
November 9th, 2010 at 10:11 PM
Cutler is available in my league and I need a qb, is it worth it?
November 9th, 2010 at 10:13 PM
Heat-Jazz is insane. Heat had it locked up and then Paul Millsapp (he’s got 44 points!) went off late and buzzer-beater forced OT.
Jazz lead by 1, 2 mins left
November 9th, 2010 at 10:13 PM
Looks like Wade is the closer for the Heat. I wonder how Lebron felt standing still on the opposite side of the floor while Wade did his thing.
November 9th, 2010 at 10:13 PM
I have too many jokes for this.
November 9th, 2010 at 10:14 PM
Worth what?
November 9th, 2010 at 10:15 PM
Fucking Bosh. Playing like Randy Moss.
November 9th, 2010 at 10:15 PM
don’t worry TBL, I’ve been holding it down.
this game is fantastic.
November 9th, 2010 at 10:15 PM
LOL. I feel dirty now.
November 9th, 2010 at 10:18 PM
So how many games until the TBL looking motherfucker gets fired?
November 9th, 2010 at 10:19 PM
You shou;d have heard me fucking cackle when I heard this. Fucking funniest shit said this year. + Everything.

November 9th, 2010 at 10:20 PM
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW
November 9th, 2010 at 10:21 PM
this crazy game would end like this.
November 9th, 2010 at 10:21 PM
how cheap was the foul call?
November 9th, 2010 at 10:21 PM
i’ve only got a gamecast. tell me of the last 10 seconds.
November 9th, 2010 at 10:21 PM
Very cheap. That sucks.
November 9th, 2010 at 10:22 PM
love that D-wade gets whistled. fuck that guy.
good on Milsap for going hulksmash. and I must say these new jazz jerseys are sweet
November 9th, 2010 at 10:23 PM
It was definitely a foul, dirt, but I was surprised they called it. It was on Wade, and they usually are so hesitant to call fouls like that.
November 9th, 2010 at 10:24 PM
That was a Epic implosion by the Heat. WOW.
November 9th, 2010 at 10:25 PM
The Heat only have to go 68-6 the rest of the way to break Chicago’s single season wins record.
By the way, Lebron triple double. Check his stats.
November 9th, 2010 at 10:25 PM
Picking up as a fantasy qb?
November 9th, 2010 at 10:25 PM
I would just like to point out, for those that didn’t see…
here’s what happened in the 4th quarter; don’t think I’ve seen anything near that since T-Mac’s 11 points-
November 9th, 2010 at 10:25 PM
the pacers scored 144 tonight? anyone see that shit? some pacer had to go off.
November 9th, 2010 at 10:25 PM
Kevin McHale would make a great Lerch if they ever did another Addams Family movie.
November 9th, 2010 at 10:27 PM
There aint no such thing as a gamecast. Theres a dreamcast and a Game Cube.
November 9th, 2010 at 10:28 PM
good on Milsap for going hulksmash. and I must say these new jazz jerseys are sweet
+1 on the Jazz jerseys.

I was watching the score. It was a 10 point game at the half, and then went blowout city.
November 9th, 2010 at 10:29 PM
fuck Bill Simmons.
November 9th, 2010 at 10:30 PM
Hahaha. I love that we both saw that at the same time. But he is very right.
November 9th, 2010 at 10:30 PM
Sons of Anarchy is ridiculous. Not in a good way.
November 9th, 2010 at 10:31 PM
great, great win for the Jazz
November 9th, 2010 at 10:31 PM
they shot about 65% from the floor, including 16-30 from 3. yikes.
November 9th, 2010 at 10:32 PM
Sons of Anarchy is ridiculous. Not in a good way.
let me guess, they paid off the incest angle. That show used to really be good.

it was way worse than loose stool. It was something called anal leakage. That undigestible oil just leaked out of your anus.
November 9th, 2010 at 10:44 PM
I always wanted to punch Josh McRoberts.
He actually starts for the Pacers. In a game where they scored 144 points, and he played 31 minutes, he chipped in 2. 10 rebounds though.
November 9th, 2010 at 10:44 PM
He was the 4th best high school player in his conference. The MIC Conference in Indy had Oden, Conley, Eric Gordon and Josh McRoberts battling it out.

Favorite Duke player ever: Greg Paulus.
November 9th, 2010 at 10:47 PM
Dude just thought he was better than he was. He had no business leaving early. I remember when Shavilk Randolph caught Mono, that was lame.
November 9th, 2010 at 10:51 PM
Riles will give TBL/Spolestra time off to go start a family if he doesn’t have one
November 9th, 2010 at 10:54 PM
just wait until mike miller comes back. mike miller!!
November 9th, 2010 at 11:01 PM
The Duke squad was walking into the AMC (thrillerdome) for a game against GT while me and a couple teammates were leaving after practice (the track team’s locker rooms were in the same building). We turned a corner at the same time a few Duke players with headphones on turned the corner, and Paulus and I ran into each other. I said ‘sorry’, he took off one of his headphones and told me to ‘watch where you’re walking’. i then told him ‘fuck off, i just said sorry you stupid bastard’, he said ‘fuck you’ and we all walked away. it was super ghey.
November 9th, 2010 at 11:03 PM
Is anybody watching ESPN2 right now about the phone calls with Cam Newton & his pops?
November 9th, 2010 at 11:17 PM
Not surprised one bit. I don’t hate Duke like a lotta people, but I do expect them all to be douchebags.
The 1 person I know who actually still goes to Duke is in fact a huge douchebag, so maybe there’s that.
November 9th, 2010 at 11:19 PM
Fuck Cam Newton.

Late to this party, but no. I would be against such a preference for ANY religion. Do not play the freedom of religion or 1st amendment crap with this issue.
It’s OK, that a Muslim man rapes his wife repeatedly, but a judge rules it’s OK as it’s covered under religious law?!?!?! I’m sorry, but fuck that.

I’m sorry, butt fuck that.

November 9th, 2010 at 11:27 PM
Any commenters on here that watch soccer? I just bet the money line on Real Murcia v. Real Madrid. +2500 seems like the worst bet of all time. Did I just bet on like a grade school girls team to beat one of the best teams in the world?

This is the type of level thinking I can respect.

Starkweather: What is it? Spanish Derby?. Or just league play. Either way, most likely wasted money ( or wasted free cents).
November 9th, 2010 at 11:30 PM
Yeah, it’s cents. I didn’t see a designation like that, I just saw the horrible odds and though I couldn’t beat em
November 9th, 2010 at 11:31 PM
Yeah Stark: Just did a quick check. Spanish knockout tourney. Real Madrid wants the damn treble this year. They ain’t losing that match.
November 9th, 2010 at 11:32 PM
I’ve been trying to force myself to stick to my rule that nothing in basketball counts until January but the Lakers have been so gd good so far it’s throwing me off. I don’t think they even play a legit title contender until like their 18th game but they look like a contender for 90 wins, playoffs included
November 9th, 2010 at 11:33 PM
Ha! Thanks, jers. I think I’d win like $2.50 after bonus on a 4 cent bet if it somehow comes true
November 9th, 2010 at 11:35 PM
Eh. Stark, you’re in luck, Real is sitting half their regular starters.
November 9th, 2010 at 11:35 PM
I’m a child. But I enjoyed this.
November 9th, 2010 at 11:36 PM
But Mourinho still probably intends to win. Always want to take the treble if you can.
November 9th, 2010 at 11:37 PM
Sweet! I’m looking to move from rookie to Vez-level
November 9th, 2010 at 11:41 PM
That’s pretty good Jose. Not at all the same kind of thing but I’ve gotta put this out here again because nobody was with me the last time I asked, am I the only one on here dying to see what the OddFuture kids do with big studio $$$?
November 9th, 2010 at 11:44 PM
Why can’t I stop watching The Event? I should. No one would blame me. Damn it.
November 9th, 2010 at 11:44 PM
I would point out that Kobe scored 23 in the first half again on 9-15, but they’re playing the Wolves, so nevermind.
November 9th, 2010 at 11:46 PM
Yeah, they haven’t played A+ competition at all, tonight included, but they just look so f’ing built.
November 9th, 2010 at 11:48 PM
Hilarious poll on the Lakers broadcast: Who is the greatest Lakers big man of all time: Kareem, Wilt, Shaq, Mikan or Gasol? Have I missed where Gasol is in the argument for best big man of all time or does he just not fit on that list?
November 9th, 2010 at 11:56 PM
Old looking tween girls have you roped in, huh?
November 10th, 2010 at 12:02 AM
Haha. The show is just so dumb. They have great actors on the show, but not great acting. Great story, but terrible story telling. Argh. How about the nice not so subtle joke about Warren Buffet though. Made me chuckle.

Cam Newton pay-to-play – great extended interview on espn.radio with the writer.

Yeah but only as a Laker though right? Obviously he’d come in last but during his prime, as a Laker he brought in 2 championships. Wilt wasn’t the same as a Laker, Shaq had his problems with the exit, Kareem was a little past his prime. Granted this is a very weak argument, but I don’t have a problem with him being on the list, as long as he comes in a distant 5th
November 10th, 2010 at 12:14 AM
cmon jose. mikan v. gasol?
get yer short-shorts love outta here
November 10th, 2010 at 12:15 AM
kareem/shaq 1-2, either order. not sure about wilt, so maybe gasol third, but def ahead of mikan. pre-1970s not named wilt or russell go last
November 10th, 2010 at 12:18 AM
ha! open-netter at colorado gets me the over. blazers about to get me another spread win. but need sharks comeback and 3 3p goals in San Jose for another over
November 10th, 2010 at 12:32 AM
Ha! Kareem 59%, Pau 17%, Wilt 14%, Shaq 7% and Mikan 3%. Lakers fans are funny
November 10th, 2010 at 12:36 AM
odom would have finished ahead of mikan too
November 10th, 2010 at 12:36 AM
That was near the highlight of the episode for me, except for Zeljko’s father firing off a clip in his son’s wife. I’m definitely in, but I’m probably one of the five people who stuck around for Invasion, Flash Forward and The Nine. Lost imitators are like my kryptonite.
November 10th, 2010 at 1:19 AM
Kareem was in his prime for his Laker career Jose, he played almost his whole caerer with them other than a few years with Milwaukee
November 10th, 2010 at 2:40 AM
I have a strong feeling the Lakers will get loss #1 in Denver on Thursday. And I don’t see what the big deal is about the Lakers poll question. They always throw guys into the vote to fill it out. And FYI, Gasol finished with 7% and Shaq with 3%.
And it’s Kareem in a runaway, fellas. He got traded to the team in the midst of his prime in 75 and had multiple MVP’s before the Lakers got Magic.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:42 AM
Ha! Kareem 59%, Pau 17%, Wilt 14%, Shaq 7% and Mikan 3%. Lakers fans are funny
Or that. I got confused. I’m just glad Pau finished ahead of Shaq. Fuck that fat fucking Celtic.
