2010-11 College Basketball Predictions & the 35 College Basketball People You Must Follow on Twitter
As we do every year, we did our way-too-early Top 20 after the Final Four in April, and not a whole lot has changed at the top despite players leaving early for the NBA, transfers, injuries, and suspensions. Duke is still clearly the deepest team with the most talent. Good luck finding a pundit who doesn’t have the Blue Devils in the Final 4. Michigan State is definitely the 2nd best team in the country (on paper). After those two, it’s fairly wide open. After the jump: Final 4 picks, the five players we think will end the year as All-Americans, and the 35 college basketball bloggers/writers/columnists/TV analysts you need to follow on twitter … with two players thrown in for good measure.Final 4:
Duke – If the Blue Devils beat Michigan State in December, there’s a good chance they won’t lose until February.
Pittsburgh – Won’t be pretty, and they’ll need a take-over scorer late in games, but this is the best team in the Big East.
Georgetown – Better as a darkhorse, and terribly thin inside, but we’re smitten with the senior backcourt of Freeman/Wright. Probably won’t finish Top 4 in the Big East, though.
Michigan State – Actually thought long and hard (that’s what she said?) about putting Illinois here. Love the Illini this year, but … Tom Izzo.
Guess at the All-American team by season’s end:
G Demetri McCamey, Illinois
G Jimmer Fredette, BYU
G Jacob Pullen, Kansas State
F Kyle Singler, Duke
F Jared Sullinger, Ohio State
Player of the Year: Kalin Lucas, Michigan State (just because we can’t do what everyone else is doing and pick Kyle Singler; same reason we left Harrison Barnes off the All-American team)
Follow these people on twitter. We’ve put them in alphabetical order. If you’ve got a gripe, and you always do, feel free to email me.

Does Texas make it out of the first weekend this year?
November 8th, 2010 at 5:07 PM
I will let others state their disagreements before I say mine.
although one is that Beadlemaniacs isn’t on the twitter list. And that there’s only one s in Gasaway.

Goddamn you Greg Monroe for your wise financial decision!!!!!!!!

wait. how can you pick Kalin Lucas to be POY and then not be on your All-American 1st Team?
November 8th, 2010 at 5:09 PM
Regardless of Kanter, Kentucky only goes as far as Brandon Knight takes them.
/FOTY’d
November 8th, 2010 at 5:09 PM
If you dont like Kentucky, don’t follow this guy. He’s a pretty funny writer, but he never says a damn negative thing about Kentucky. He also believes the NCAA has a gripe with UK, even saying once that other programs are “jealous”.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:10 PM
Vargas looks like shit. How can you be nearly 7 feet tall and not rebound or block?
November 8th, 2010 at 5:11 PM
I don’t think Singler makes it. He’s not going to need to score much and Coach K will probably play him out of position at the 4 instead of going big like he did last season, which was a large part of their success.

Or if you’re a quasi-objective UK fan… Or if you don’t like non-objective, whining cheerleaders… Or if you don’t like Calpari fiends…

Amen, Double P.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:13 PM
He’s a lazy jumper with little or no explosion. That’s alright tho, because we got Josh Harrelson and his 27 rebounds a game.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:13 PM
He also believes the NCAA has a gripe with UK
He’s not wrong about this but, then again, neither is the NCAA

Calipari’s schtick is starting to get to me. Mostly because everyone I talk to now says he’s a huge douche to everyone but Jones. Jones is a university mouthpiece.

November 8th, 2010 at 5:15 PM
There’s also the case of the ESPN conspiracy against UK, too. Sigh, sigh, sigh.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:15 PM
Georgetown? Woof. No way. I’m not buying Pittsburgh either. In fact I think the Big East has a down year altogether.
Big 12 is the conference to watch. They could have three legit title candidates, plus Missouri and Texas.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:15 PM

November 8th, 2010 at 5:16 PM
Calipari taking away his Twi++er (I don’t think the word is banned anymore) was such horseshit. However if we have to rely on Harrelson getting every damn rebound in the game, or Liggins, we’re screwed.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:16 PM

November 8th, 2010 at 5:17 PM
I like Pitt, but I think Nova’s the team to beat in the BE. That’s assuming Marquette stumbles in its attempt to take the BE by storm and go 18-0 in conference play.
/JIMMY BUTLER!

Cal reminds me of a used-car salesman, but damn, that MFer can recruit. Can he coach that talent all the way to the finish line?

What are you a Magic 8-ball??
November 8th, 2010 at 5:19 PM
Buckeyes have the potential to be a better tournament team than last year, and unheralded freshman PG Aaron Craft has been impressing (Goodman loves him). Cannot wait to see Sullinger (yesterday’s scrimmage is on BTN at 6:00). He played poorly by most accounts and still dominated the class and scored 20 or so.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:19 PM
FF – Pitt, K State, MSU, Duke

November 8th, 2010 at 5:20 PM
I actually have hope for Miller here too, but I’ve resigned myself to the fact they’re going to have to team rebound exceptionally well or it won’t be very nice to watch.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:20 PM
I honestly completely forgot if Tubby was still with the team this season or not until I saw a commercial for Gophers Basketball, and he was there.

November 8th, 2010 at 5:22 PM
The big question is how the seeding shakes out for the Big East teams in the NCAA tourney. Georgetown, Nova, Marquette, ND, Pitt and Louisville all losing in the first or second rounds last year was embarrasing.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:23 PM
Needs more Arsenal being imperious.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:23 PM
HOMER! Oh wait you like Georgetown AND Syracuse. Ridiculous.
I know we say this every year, but Izzo again has the best OOC schedule. South Carolina, Maui Classic, At Duke, Syracuse in the Garden, and then Texas. Give that man his props. And I hope Pitt gets the Syracuse treatment for schedule making by analysts. They play one neutral court game against Maryland in the Garden and don’t leave PA until 2011.
Jim Boeheim is chuckling.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:23 PM
if we can fast forward through this season onto next year when Arkansas is supposed to have a stud recruiting class, I would be ok with that.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:23 PM
Fetch – I cant comment at your site for whatever reason, but how come you picked Kentucky to win the SEC over Florida, Mississippi State or Georgia?
November 8th, 2010 at 5:25 PM
Yep. Wish OSU scheduled like that (our OOC under Matta is embarrassing with exception of Oden/Conley year)
I will be at MSG for Cuse/MSU. Cannot wait.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:25 PM
Just sit back and watch Rotnei shoot the ball. It’s a beautiful thing, man.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:25 PM
Double P – I’m hoping Miller cna step it up this year, since it’s pretty much up to him and Liggins to lead the Cats. However Brandon Knight is just something else…
November 8th, 2010 at 5:27 PM
Also, Jon Hood picking #4 because he likes JJ Reddick sent a mini uproar in this state. Yes: a kid picking a number on UK made people call into radio shows.
Hate.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:27 PM
Ha.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:28 PM
I’ve been patiently waiting for his hype train to catch up to Irving’s and Barnes’. I’ll give it another two weeks or so.
Speaking of Miller, judging by the exhibitions, I honestly think Cal’s planning on playing him 40 minutes a game.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:28 PM
alright, My main disagreement is with this phrase:
There might be a place where MSU is the 2nd best team in america, but on paper is definitely not it. Everyone, including Pomeroy, has them overrated thi syear.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:28 PM
You’re telling me. And I love Courtney Fortson but I can’t say I’m upset he’s gone, definitely will help the development of the team. But this year’s gonna be a fucking abortion, Arkansas’ gonna be bad, even by SEC standards
November 8th, 2010 at 5:29 PM
I was yelling “JJ HOOD” when he started bombing Dillard the other night.
/LOL’d
November 8th, 2010 at 5:29 PM
Gotta love Izzo. They’ll probably get blown out at Duke, causing everyone to forget about them as they sneak out another Big Ten title.
Another random prediction: Malcolm Delaney of V-Tech will be an All-American.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:30 PM
Vez, that gif you put up earlier is like the monkey’s paw for me. I love it and it’s awesome but it might just ruin my life here at work
November 8th, 2010 at 5:31 PM
It’ll be a good test to see how good Joseph and the frosh really are. Cuse has some interesting non conference games lined up. They get Northern Iowa right out the gate and I’m not sure how this team will handle someone else slowing and controlling tempo. Butler did it to them in the tournament and look what happened. Pitt does it and owns the Cuse. Then they have NC state on the schedule right before MSU which will be tricky.
Excited to see what this team can bring and if Fab Melo can develop any kind of offensive game. If he does it will be another good year. Their zone should be outstanding.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:32 PM
And Tennessee. I know, they’re always overrated, but Scotty Hopson is legit, and apparently they have a badass freshman in Tobias Harris.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:33 PM
Rotnei can shoot the lights out when he gets a shot. the problem the team has is getting plays where he can get a decent shot. that should improve this year with Fortson gone. I’m hoping they won’t be as bad as they were last year, and if Marshawn Powell can keep developing he is going to be beastly.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:34 PM
Singler will not be playing significant minutes at the 4 outside of late game situations. The 3 is Duke’s thinnest position, and K doesn’t want to go three guards with Duke’s current lineup b/c the guards are short.
Also, my predictions, except sub in Ohio State instead of Purdue (post was up before the Hummel injury).

November 8th, 2010 at 5:35 PM
GSG: Nothing quantifiable. Just a hunch.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:36 PM
Wouldn’t be surprised if Butler studied up on that game. Pitt has the formula. They get to the short corner against the zone and they don’t panic against SU’s lengthy trap..then they find open shooters. It’s pretty impressive to watch.
I know it’s only been a handful of practices that I’ve been at (and the exhibition game), but have not been impressed with Waiters. Obviously it’s a long season and SU has some great coaches, but wasn’t liking his disposition.
Fab Melo on the other hand…will be one of the best defenders in teh country immediately. Not so sure about much offense other than clean up guy around the rim, but with Rick Jackson, that might be enough.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:36 PM
This is what I’m banking on. If all goes well he should be a monster
November 8th, 2010 at 5:39 PM
Harris will be really good. Still shocked Pearl got him. Wouldn’t have been surprised to see him bolt with all the negative attention around the program. But he stuck it out. We’ll see if that was the right decision.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:40 PM
There’s no way Coach K isn’t going to do everything he can help his senior with POY
November 8th, 2010 at 5:41 PM
The guy to watch for me is CJ Fair, he’s still really thin but he looks like he could have that good midrange game that could really open things up for Joseph to get to the basket. Unfortunately Fair is still about a year away I think from being a major contributor.
And if Mookie Jones is on the floor for extended minutes in close games this year I’m going to flip out.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:41 PM
my favorite moment in November: The days around thanksgiving where you sit in front the TV and watch the Maui Invitational
http://www.mauiinvitational.com/Story.asp?story_id=114
good field: Duke, G’Town, Memphis, Tenn
November 8th, 2010 at 5:43 PM
Don’t forget the coaches dressed in ridiculous Hawaiian shirts
November 8th, 2010 at 5:44 PM
That’s next year’s field. This year it’s Washington, UK, MSU, UVA, Witchta St, Oklahoma, and UConn.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:44 PM
that’s next year’s field, TBL
November 8th, 2010 at 5:44 PM
That’s next year’s Maui field. This year’s is:
Chaminade, Connecticut, Kentucky, Michigan State, Oklahoma, Virginia, Washington, Wichita State
November 8th, 2010 at 5:45 PM
Combo breaker.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:46 PM
I’d like to watch Kentucky vs Washington. Michigan State would just walk all over UK.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:46 PM
Two weeks from today Duke plays Marquette and Gonzaga goes up against K-State which means you should have a Duke/K-State matchup two weeks from tomorrow in Kansas City. That could be an interesting game seeing that it will be a home game for K-State.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:46 PM
fuck you for beating me, tallguy
November 8th, 2010 at 5:46 PM
Tobias Wolf owns Tobias Harris.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:47 PM
Someone just wrote a good piece (maybe Goodman, yeah it was Goodman) on why these great preseason tournaments have disappeared. Kinda sucks
And does anyone else miss Athletes in Action? I remember seeing a 280 pound Harold “The Show” Arceneau go up against Ohio State. Very sad. But hilarious
November 8th, 2010 at 5:48 PM
Kentucky played them a few times before they decided to face off against the likes of Tates Creek High School.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:48 PM
Get used to it now fellas, cause Duke is headed for another title. Starting five of Nolan, Kyrie, Singler and the Plumlee brothers with Dawkins and Curry off the bench. All is right in the universe again
November 8th, 2010 at 5:48 PM
almost lost to them, too.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:49 PM
I read that entire comment in Coach K voice.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:49 PM
And I typed out the field for this year (excluding Chaminade).
Thus proving once again Duke > KU and UK
/yes, I’m going to be insufferable this year
November 8th, 2010 at 5:50 PM
Does anyone know the field for this years Maui Invitational?
November 8th, 2010 at 5:51 PM
at being douchers perhaps. At basketball tradition? balderdash.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:52 PM
Aw, it’s cute because when you add up KU and
Coach K’sDuke’s championships, it equals seven, same as UK.November 8th, 2010 at 5:53 PM
I meant in general.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:54 PM
What sucks is that all my favorite teams are gonna be shitty this year, with the exception of WKU (and to some degree CMU) and they’ll never be on real TV. Ah well, Steffphon Pettigrew, know thy name.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:54 PM
fair enough. I think we can all agree which redneck university is 3rd on that list.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:55 PM
Waving wheat is considered redneck now?
November 8th, 2010 at 5:55 PM
Enjoy having a Final Four vacated (if Cal ever gets you there)…already came close to losing 35 wins.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:56 PM

November 8th, 2010 at 5:58 PM
it’s also in Kentucky. Trump card.
November 8th, 2010 at 5:58 PM
You should go…that’d be a lot of fun watching Duke, KState, Fraudzaga and Marquette.
November 8th, 2010 at 6:00 PM

November 8th, 2010 at 6:04 PM
However I hate Louisville.
November 8th, 2010 at 6:07 PM
3 of my buddies broke down in Elizabethtown, Kentucky for 3 days on their way back home from Florida. They said it was hell on earth. No booze, nothing to do, one place to eat, and one autobody shop that took 3 days to fix a ripped up axel. I was not envious of them.
November 8th, 2010 at 6:12 PM
Well that’s just ridiculous. I’ve enjoyed Derby City on many an occasion
November 8th, 2010 at 6:16 PM
Kentucky Derby is the best sporting event I’ve ever been to. And I’m including the whole week before it as part of the event
November 8th, 2010 at 6:17 PM

November 8th, 2010 at 6:19 PM
I spent a night in Kentucky moving down to Atlanta. Somewhere near Paducah — Awful night.

BJ is a man child, and if he can somehow actually get thru high school without ending up in prison you will crap bricks when you see him.
November 8th, 2010 at 7:06 PM
Good God, you had to stay around Paducah? You poor bastard. Was it Owensboro?
November 9th, 2010 at 10:35 AM
As a TN fan, I can assure you Scotty Hopson is about the least legit player playing this year. Dude has insane ability and talent, but never puts it together for more than one game out of every 4. He’s soft. He can’t play. Harris is the one who is legit.
