Final Word on The 2010 World Series Ratings
World Series Ratings: The Giants over the Rangers in five games tied a dubious record – lowest rated World Series in baseball history. That’s not good news, considering Dallas & San Francisco are the 5th and 6th largest TV markets in the country. Baseball ratings have been trending down for about 15 years now. It’s tough to pin the blame on just steroids/PEDs. Is it simply an attention span issue among sports fans? NBA Finals ratings were enormous in the 80s and 90s, but fell off considerably in the 00s after Kobe and Shaq won a few titles, but rebounded in June with the Lakers and Celtics. Meanwhile, NFL TV ratings – just the regular season, mind you – are astronomical. Focusing on fans who are just watching at home … why aren’t they tuning in to MLB? It wouldn’t surprise us if ratings for a Heat-Lakers Final topped the Giants-Rangers World Series. [USA Today]

NOBODY CARES ABOUT RATINGS. BASEBALL WILL STILL BE AROUND EVEN IF HOCKEY (won’t happen) GETS BETTER RATINGS.
FUCK THE DOUGIE TOO.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:17 PM
I can get with this.
But cannot get with that.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:18 PM
Played baseball in high school and college and have lost all interest in watching it on TV.
The game is way too slow. We were at the bar on Monday and Pat Burrell had seen 4 pitches and the Texans had already run 5 plays in that time frame, including huddles. It was ridiculous. Until MLB puts some kind of rule on guys stepping out of the box, I’m out on watching it on TV.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:18 PM
fantasy football = ratings
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:18 PM
What these ratings say is that the playoff format isnt working. Baseball needs a BCS.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:20 PM
Get rid of the DH. It’s that easy.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:20 PM
How much longer you give MLB before it’s forced to shut down operations TBL?
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:20 PM
Bring back the Yankees.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:20 PM
Correct me if I’m wrong – but arent all ratings trending down? What with having more and more choices for TV?
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:21 PM
Well, I guess baseball is dead. It’s been real….
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:21 PM
Get rid of the DH. It’s that easy.
keep that national league talk to yourself, gay.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:21 PM
Not college football, through the roof growth. THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN. PLAYOFF!
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:22 PM
I don’t know the exact reason, but the fact that the World Series has been using the same Fox production in seemingly forever should be a red flag. This includes the announcing pair of Buck and McCarver.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:22 PM
This is true. Also why Taylor Swift’s new album sold more first-week copies than any album since 2005.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:22 PM
Then can you imagine what a Yankees-Cubs world series would bring? The historically big and popular teams always bring higher ratings.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:22 PM
That’s funny. Do you also want to see kickers play linebacker? They’d be roughly as effective at that as pitchers are at hitting.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:23 PM
Wow. Ridiculous.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:23 PM
Could it be that football is more entertaining than baseball and basketball?
/Of course it is
I am pretty sure fantasy baseball is really big too. I think it has more to do with gambling than fantasy. Look at how well CFB does.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:23 PM
Spencer likes hockey.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:23 PM
where’s Fetch?
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:24 PM
Well this is true because it has been mostly a regional sport, growing in popularity now in regions that dont have big teams.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:24 PM
thank you.
/high five
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:24 PM
Also why Taylor Swift’s new album sold more first-week copies than any album since 2005.
Baseball did this to us?
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:25 PM
fantasy football is gambling
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:25 PM
Yes.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:25 PM
GAMBLING. One of my friends feels the need to text me his bets every weekend (College & NFL) and he doesn’t give a fuck about sports.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:25 PM
Not the best example since most pitchers have been hitting most of thier career and kickers are fags much like ill and Cal.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:26 PM
Sho nuff.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:26 PM
Absolutely. Without gambling, New England would still have no idea the sport existed.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:26 PM
All of this. Baseball is terribly boring, the ratings mess shouldn’t come as any surprise.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:26 PM
The 4th pitch part of the story tells you it’s made up.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:27 PM
so have most punters.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:28 PM
There is also fantasy baseball, and gambling on baseball. But those aren’t too popular either (relative to NFL). I wonder why . . .
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:29 PM
Irish, if you were lumping in Fantasy and gambling then I agree with your point.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:29 PM
No
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:29 PM
golf > baseball
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:29 PM
This is untrue. Pitchers don’t hit in the minors. I’m sure many kickers played other positions in high school but it doesn’t mean they’re qualified to do it at the pro level.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:30 PM
Not the best example since most pitchers have been hitting most of thier career
not true at all. most pitchers stop hitting in HS. so unless they have the lifespan of Nick Adenhart, that’s not most their career.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:31 PM
They’re both just a bunch of white guys hitting a ball around with sticks.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:32 PM
Well they do sometimes. I dont know why.. I go to several AA games a year and sometimes there’s a DH, but sometimes there isnt.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:32 PM
that is more accurate.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:32 PM
no
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:32 PM
Bitch calm down, I’m a yankee fan. But I’ve come around to the other side after sitting through 4 hour games.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:32 PM
Fantasy baseball is not inclusive of the playoffs and baseball is far more difficult to bet on than football?
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:33 PM
This.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:33 PM
golf > baseball
damnit, don’t make me choose.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:33 PM
The season is twice as long as the next sport. After over 160 games who cares about a team that they don’t even follow?
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:33 PM
so is hockey only, for some reason, golf and baseball fans don’t feel the need to hijack every post on this site talking about those two sports.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:34 PM
Baseball if far, far easier to bet on as there are 10x as many games and thus more opportunity for market inefficiency.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:34 PM
As a baseball traditionalist….
fuck the Dougie.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:34 PM
Interesting, since the entire baseball game was almost complete before the first half of the football game was over.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:34 PM
/JMorris’d (did I do that right?)
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:35 PM
Well they do sometimes. I dont know why.. I go to several AA games a year and sometimes there’s a DH, but sometimes there isnt.
NL AL rules apply in the minors.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:36 PM
bulldog – being the expert you are on the subject, please provide more feedback than a simple “no.”
kthxbia
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:37 PM
Bitch calm down, I’m a yankee fan.
Well that’s gay.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:37 PM
QC (Midwest League) Cardinals Single A squad use a DH. Last check St Louis was a National League franchise.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:37 PM
who cares? it wasnt a bad series.
man, obama looks pissed.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:38 PM
GAMBLING. One of my friends feels the need to text me his bets every weekend (College & NFL) and he doesn’t give a fuck about sports.
TBL?
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:38 PM
No
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:38 PM
What the hell is this dougie thing everyone is always complaint about? I know it’s a dance but when did it get so big? I have never heard anyone talk about it other than here.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:40 PM
man, obama looks pissed.
It was a slaughter last night and these reporters smell blood in the water. They are bringing up things he said in obscure pressers two years ago. Sure it’s fair game, but I’d be pissed too.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:41 PM
Football is a much more exciting television program. Of course.
/doesn’t mean that “losing” the ratings “battle” to any sport means baseball is in trouble.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:41 PM
QC (Midwest League) Cardinals Single A squad use a DH. Last check St Louis was a National League franchise.
maybe it’s only AA and AAA then. either way, the NL/AL DH rules apply, i think the DH is used when AL plays NL regardless of home field.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:41 PM
GAMBLING. One of my friends feels the need to text me his bets every weekend (College & NFL) and he doesn’t give a fuck about sports.
TBL?

I like pine trees.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:42 PM
Selig has to get a clue. He has to start ending the season about Sept. 20, and World Series needs to be over by Oct. 15 – that way the stories of the NFL and college football don’t take the nation’s attention. But knowing Bud, he’ll extend the season into December, thinking that that will help his product.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:43 PM
I don’t know how much this means anymore, but MNF was the only one on that list on cable.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:43 PM
No
sounds eerily similiar to the response i got when you were supposed to pay up on that OSU/ORE bet last year.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:43 PM
i usually buy the new car trees

November 3rd, 2010 at 1:44 PM
There was a Monday night game? News to me.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:44 PM
Can you recite the spefics regarding the spread and wager? Oh, you can’t? ok.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:45 PM
ESPN. Not like it was on Showtime.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:45 PM
Pine trees do smell awesome
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:45 PM
Thought the most telling sign at the sports bar on Monday night was there was literally no one watching the tv with baseball on it. All eyes were either on the football game, the third period of an early season Blackhawks game, or the third quarter of a regular season Bulls game. Granted these are teams that the locals follow (other than the NFL game), but this was a scoreless game in what turned out to be the World Series clincher. Not good.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:45 PM
attending a baseball game > attending a football game
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:46 PM
This is hardly an apples-to-apples comparison. Yankees-Phillies would be better, but even then the NBA Finals don’t compete against football.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:46 PM
How many WS were blacked out by Cablevision?
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:46 PM
First pitch of the game was 7:57 no? So it started a good 40 minutes before the MNF kicked off. The problem with baseball is the slow game action. It’s not conducive to this generation. In Jersey they have (or had) a rule where you can’t step out of the box (unless you foul it off) and you’re only allowed one offensive timeout per inning. We routinely played 7 inning games in less than 2 hours. Don’t know why that wouldn’t work in MLB.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:47 PM
Or new run network TV. Most A-list shows are over by June.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:48 PM
Baseball is awash in cash. I don’t think they are too concerned. Non-issue.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:48 PM
only thing i like about christmas trees.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:48 PM
Although to clarify, attending MLB game > attending NFL game.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:48 PM
i remember the wager was $100 because i was making bets left and right that same day.
can’t remember the spread tho…wanna say it was oregon -4.5…something like that.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:49 PM
Got game 4.
I would still like to see a contrast between the ratings, just for the sake of MNF, between the last couple years on abc and since it went to ESPN. It still boggles my mind that we live in a world where 2 and a half men and DWTS are so damn popular.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:49 PM
Not with I. I never agreed upon anything with anyone officially.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:50 PM
Baseball is a regional sport. Here in LA they had every TV on the baseball game, one on MNF, one on NBA TV and that was it. Can’t imagine that would happen any place else other than California and Texas. When the NBA finals are on the bars have every TV on them regardless if the Lakers are in it and one on the Dodger game. There’s baseball’s problem right there.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:50 PM
Can you recite the spefics regarding the spread and wager? Oh, you can’t? ok.
we never agreed on a spread (not that it mattered). if i actually gave a shit, i’m sure i could find emails.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:51 PM
I just saw a 50 year old Beavis ask obama a question.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:51 PM
Is that the game where Jacob Tamme showed us how overrated Dallas Clark is?
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:51 PM
Yes, and attending a High school FB game >>> High school baseball game for me.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:51 PM
Oh shit.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:52 PM
As long as you keep the dong pics we exchanged off Deadspin I’m fine
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:53 PM
No, but the story is that the SERIES tied for the lowest ratings ever. I was wondering how many games some people couldnt even turn it on.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:53 PM
attending MLB game > attending NFL game.
anyone who grew up in a town with a minor league team might disagree. players are normally good, seats are better, and beer/food are cheaper. also, it’s where you;ll find the best hecklers.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:54 PM
I wouldn’t say that. Look at Manning’s YPA in that game compared to the rest of the season’s games. Safeties weren’t exactly trembling in fear.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:55 PM
Don’t overestimate the jpq’s of the world. Both my in-laws and parents pay for cable and get 100s of channels, yet watch the same 4 network stations every night.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:55 PM
anyone who grew up in a town with a minor league team might disagree. players are normally good, seats are better, and beer/food are cheaper. also, it’s where you;ll find the best hecklers
And minor league clubs do crazy promotions like drop $1,000 in cash onto the field from a helicopter for people to grab.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:56 PM
I think I’m missing your point. I’m telling you that the first 3 games were blacked out.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:57 PM
Get out of here with that. Look at those ratings! They wish they could be half as good as the NBA.
/ignore that multiple NBA teams are having money issues
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:58 PM
Ok then. I wonder why that isnt factored in.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:59 PM
Box seats $7
Draft beer $1
Yelling F-bombs at Andy Van Slyke’s fatfuck son…priceless
November 3rd, 2010 at 2:00 PM
Don’t overestimate the jpq’s of the world
blow it out your ass. I have never watched ONE SECOND of 2 1/2 men, dont watch DWTS (my wife watches sometimes)
In fact, I am the opposite. The ONLY stations I watch are cable.
November 3rd, 2010 at 2:00 PM
Ruins the narrative that the likes of TBL enjoy running with since they don’t like the sport…what that narrative is I still don’t know since MLB is very healthy financially
November 3rd, 2010 at 2:00 PM
Doesn’t fit the narrative.
November 3rd, 2010 at 2:01 PM
True that. What’s that, like 5 million subscribers right there?
November 3rd, 2010 at 2:01 PM
Thank god this happened.
November 3rd, 2010 at 2:01 PM
I am just pissy because Big Rapey still struggles with concepts like “hot route” and “check down”. Though I still think Colts receivers are overrated because they get to play with Manning. Guys get hurt and the new guys still produce. Even Anthony Gonzalez had 50+ yards and he’d be mayor of bustville on most other teams.
November 3rd, 2010 at 2:03 PM
Sorry, I just can’t pass up an opportunity to make an age joke. You comment on a sports blog, so obviously you’re the exception, but my parents and all their friends, plus my in-laws and their friends all devour anything the networks put out.
November 3rd, 2010 at 2:04 PM
I said this this morning, but it’s interesting that people are saying this now, when earlier in Manning’s career when the Pats were winning Super Bowls it was all about how Manning had so much offensive talent and Brady was doing it with nobodies. It’s strange the ways the narratives are manipulated and shaped throughout the years. Maybe both QB’s are just really good and the teams employing them are just really good at scouting talent?
November 3rd, 2010 at 2:07 PM
Sorry, I just can’t pass up an opportunity to make an age joke. You comment on a sports blog, so obviously you’re the exception, but my parents and all their friends, plus my in-laws and their friends all devour anything the networks put out.

/deletes comment making fun of jpq.
November 3rd, 2010 at 2:10 PM
Colt’s Receiver’s like Wayne and Harrison are very talented, but switch one of them with a Torry Holt or Steve Smith (Carolina) and I think they would get the same notoriety.
Those people were idiots. Brady ‘won’ SB because Vinatieri hit timely kicks and his defense played well.
This
November 3rd, 2010 at 2:11 PM
Football = gambling and fantasty.
Basketball = player recognizability
Baseball = too many foreign players and poor marketing by the league
November 3rd, 2010 at 2:11 PM
JPQ: Lotta hate there buddy, take a chill pill
He was faking outrage. Maybe you should take the chill pill.

It was a joke from a comment last night, go find something wrong with Blake Lively…
November 3rd, 2010 at 2:12 PM
IIRC, Ty already took his pill this morning
November 3rd, 2010 at 2:13 PM
Brady = really good. Manning = great
November 3rd, 2010 at 2:32 PM
Consentlessberger is almost as fat as J-Russell. Seriously, that fucker is gonna balloon by this time next year.
November 3rd, 2010 at 4:13 PM
really, no one got this? Pitchers only hit if it’s an NL-NL affiliate game. Otherwise they don’t.
and Mike: betting on baseball is far harder in aggregate than football because of the random variance in each game
November 3rd, 2010 at 4:48 PM
I think there’s something to this. BUT, remember … huge ratings when it was slow in 80s & 90s. Maybe this generation of 18-34 people can’t deal with the slowness.
or, could there be something to the wide gap in payroll? it really exploded in the late 90s/00s … that’s when ratings began to go down
