I’ll probably be watching CNN tomorrow. It’s the lesser of the cable news evils. If it gets too intolerable, will probably switch over to one of the networks if they are covering.

All I’m rooting for is no Tancredo. I can’t imagine that guy actually having to govern something. I don’t think he even really wants to win–he’d have no idea what to do. “Whattya mean I can’t just ship all of these Mexicans out? Who says?”

Anyone who wants to see this Tea Party movement described perfectly read Samuel Huntington’s “Who Are We: The Challenges to America’s National Identity.” He predicted the movement exactly, several years beforehand. Guy was a massive racist but holy shit was he dead on with this one (surprise surprise eh?).

What I was reading in this thread: people trying to apply some *actual* historical accuracy to this, all the while admitting that Republicans are going to win the House.

The whole notion of the “tea party” is itself kind of illusory. These people aren’t some previously undiscovered voting bloc; they’re conservative republicans. Those that self-identify thusly overwhelmingly voted for Republican candidates previously. Republicans historically turn out for midterm elections. Every Democratic president since LBJ–hell, before that–has dealt with an angry conservative base.

All I’m saying is, we’ve really, really lowered the bar for watershed political moments in this country.

Very true. Democrats will have a lot more seats to defend in 2012 than they do now. If the Senate changes hands, that’s when it will happen.

But that being said, two years is a long time in politics. Much can still happen.

For the record, the biggest one-day loss for the president’s party in modern times was in 1938, when voters expressed their impatience with the Depression and FDR’s New Deal by voting out 71 Democrats.

To be fair… there were quite a few good things that eventually came out of this. Hopefully some of Barry’s long-term legislative efforts have positive repercussions despite the current bleak outlook.

It’s pathetic going both ways. It’s pathetic that the Democrats were so spineless in congress the past few years and weren’t willing to be as cutthroat as the Republicans were. Like I say, they were evil, but they were efficient. If you can’t push through legislation with a super majority you deserve to lose.

The flipside is it’s pathetic that there are going to be people getting elected to office who can’t name a Supreme Court case. And that these people are so popular in certain places. It’s pretty sad on the GOP’s side that their regulars lost to some of these people.

We’ve really toned down that bipartisan problem that we had in 2008. The compromising is at an all-time high. I’m so proud of everyone.

Mostly, but not entirely. Democrats will get a few breaks, especially in the Senate. Lisa Murkowski may even split the Republican vote which would allow Scott Mcadams to sneak in, giving Democrats two senate seats in Alaska for the first time ever.

The odds of that happening are low, but that they are even there in such a Republican state is pretty amazing.

you should see who’s up for reelection in 2012. That’s when you’re getting your massive repudiation. Not all Senate Seats can be repudiated against every term. 2012 is when the Dems get crushed in the Senate for all this reform.

They’re going to win seats Republicans were going to win anyway for the most part. Long term, those same Tea Partyers are going to have to perform which has the establishment of the RNC scared much more than the people in the Democratic party are.

Exactly. If it was a massive repudiation, Republicans would gain all 10 Senate seats they need for a majority. And that’s not happening.

Republicans will probably also gain more governorships, but not as many as previously thought.

But the House will be a massacre tomorrow night. We’re going to see some Democrats who’ve been there a long time, lose their seats.
