Everyone Except Referee Steratore Knows the Dolphins Recovered Roethlisberger Fumble
When Ben Roethlisberger fumbled into the end zone on third down with a little over two minutes left, the game result hung in the balance. Though the play was called a touchdown on the field, the ball was clearly fumbled forward by Roethlisberger before he crossed the goal line. On review, referee Gene Steratore overturned the call on the field regarding the touchdown, and ruled that Ben Roethlisberger did fumble before crossing the line. That’s when it got crazy. The ball bounced into the end zone, and bodies (specifically, three Dolphins covered by Steeler players) fell on the ball in a pile. Here’s the video.
The problem was that referee Gene Steratore did not see indisputable video evidence of who recovered the fumble. I believe that the rule at issue is contained in Rule 15, Section 9 under “Reviewable Plays”. Note 1 says “If the ruling of down by contact or incomplete pass is changed, the ball belongs
to the recovering player at the spot of the recovery of the fumble, and any advance is nullified.” Note 2 states “If the Referee does not have indisputable visual evidence as to which player recovered the loose ball, the ruling on the field will stand.” Now, there was “officially” no ruling on the field in regard to who recovered, since a touchdown was signaled and then overturned.
Unofficially (because another official ruled touchdown which superceded the recovery determinations), though, the officials on the field ruled it to be Dolphins’ ball. According to Ben Volin of the Palm Beach Post, Akaika Alama-Francis of the Dolphins recovered the fumble, and claimed to have heard officials yelling ”white ball” (the Dolphins were in the white jerseys) as the pile ensued. Alama-Francis also came out of the pile with the ball. Volin reports the following from LB Karlos Dansby:
“I talked to the back judge,” Dansby said. “I said, ‘Man, you know we had the ball.’ He said, ‘Yeah, 59 (Alama-Francis) had the ball, but it’s out of our hands.’ “
The league has officially supported Steratore’s decision, and if you demand indisputable visual evidence that Miami recovered, I suppose you could say it is not indisputable from just watching the footage, although it appears extremely likely that the Dolphins were on the ball. The problem is that the rule was not designed for this circumstance.
In this case, there was no official ruling on the field as it related to recovery, such that “the ruling on the field will stand” clause kicks in, since the initial review was for the touchdown call. If Steratore was allowed to determine what the ruling on the field was in regard to recovery, by the officials who were separately monitoring recovery (as opposed to the one responsible for ruling touchdown), then it seems pretty clear that those officials ruled the recovery to the Dolphins. I think the league needs to have some common sense here, and allow for rulings by the field officials in separate phases of officiating to come into play, once another phase of the play has been overturned. Once Steratore ruled that the linesman or line judge made the incorrect call on touchdown before fumble occurred, he should have been able to separately determine what the back judge, field judge or umpire separately ruled as the officials charged with determining recovery. If he were able to do so, then Note 2 of the Instant Replay section could then have been interpreted as requiring indisputable evidence that the Dolphins did not recover, or else, their judgment that the Dolphins recovered would have stood. Refs made the wrong initial call. They fucked up.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:19 PM
fuck the steelers and fuck the NFL for giving the steelers every single fucking favorable call ever.
is this a first down? well it was for the steelers. santonio holmes can score a TD without the ball breaking the plane. they get a super bowl handed to them by the refs. the rooneys owning dog tracks. i mean, it’d be coincidence if it hasn’t been going on FOR FUCKING YEARS.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:19 PM
Hose job.

Not a working link Spencer.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:22 PM
Thumbs up.

works for me, stabbin.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:22 PM
Spencer’s Michigan hate is only trumped by his Stillllller hate. I am confident he would take a crowbar to the Rooney family’s collective knee if presented the opportunity.

Good breakdown Lisk. The Phins got jobbed.

October 25th, 2010 at 1:23 PM
Had to caption that one.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:23 PM
Right click it, copy link location and then paste it into your browser Stabbin. For some reason that Steeler’s blog has hotlink protection.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:25 PM
So it wasn’t a TD. It was a fumble. But since they didn’t have indisputable evidence as to who recovered and had not made a call on possession because of the TD call, they gave the ball back to Pittsburgh?
huh?
That’s dumb.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:25 PM
SC…i hate michigan more than the steelers. i have a shit ton of respect for the steelers’ brand of football (except for hines ward who’s nothing more than a cheapshot artist).
October 25th, 2010 at 1:25 PM
Also, I think you’re missing the video embed, Lisk… Unless you meant to just give a text PxP of it.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:26 PM
Ben looks like he is imagining his peen was that big in the pic.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:26 PM
Who wouldn’t?
October 25th, 2010 at 1:27 PM
I was watching play, for those who were also watching which Dolphin specifically got the ball?
October 25th, 2010 at 1:27 PM
and the NFL continues to be the worst run sports league. lucky for Goodell & Co, it’s too popular for his incompetence to ruin.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:27 PM
this was a good game too. sucks it had to be ruined by a Pittsburgh native
October 25th, 2010 at 1:27 PM
I read somewhere that Steratore is from Pittsburgh…
October 25th, 2010 at 1:28 PM
Sucks to suck Dolphins
October 25th, 2010 at 1:28 PM
Steelers love the dahkies though.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:28 PM
Clearly, you’re not familiar with the NHL.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:30 PM
Although, I will say… out of all the pro sports leagues in this country, the NHL has replay review figured out better than any other league.
Penalty/foul calls? Not so much.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:30 PM
I spend the summer feeling bad for Pirates fans. I really need to start remembering that these people love the Steelers as well. Fuck them and the Pirates.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:30 PM
I just think back to the demands for replay that followed this year’s World Cup and the constant argument FIFA has that says “you can’t remove human error from the situation.”
At some point, the NFL is just going to have to admit that they can’t get everything right and simplify things.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:30 PM
No.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:31 PM
No perfect answers, but I ownder if your solution doesn’t raisee its own issues. Once he crossed the plane and someone signaled for a TD then the play was over. Both the Steelers and Dolphins would have a very reasonable argument that they didn’t pursue the loose ball because the whistles had blown and a TD was signaled. How can you reward the dolphins for ignoring the official signal and going after the ball? The call penalties for doing exactly that.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:32 PM
for those who were also watching which Dolphin specifically got the ball?
59
October 25th, 2010 at 1:33 PM
because, you know, they were fighting for a fumble that they caused before the ball reached the goalline.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:33 PM
The league of no common sense strikes again. I’m very close to being done with this league. Stupid shit like this happens every week.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:33 PM
Bull fucking shit.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:34 PM
Bud Selig’s postseason scheduling would like a word.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:35 PM
Sorry for the typos. Point being, the league is setting itself up for some madness if they allow replay to reverse things after the whistle.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:35 PM
The NFL refs are looking more like NBA refs all the time.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:35 PM

Clearly, you’re not familiar with the NHL.
neither are the majority of other sports fans, hence its exclusion here.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:36 PM
Keith DeLong was the best 59 ever.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:36 PM
Is it just me, or has the officiating been really bad this year?
October 25th, 2010 at 1:36 PM
I thought the fumble question was solved by the league years ago. If there is a loose ball, see who recovers it and then if it is overturned you give that team the ball. I really don’t see how this play should be any different than some of the other fumble/non-fumble plays we see all the time. Steratore didn’t have conclusive evidence? Alama-Francis standing up with the ball in his hands and officials saying “white ball” isn’t enough for you to change the call? Fucking horrible.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:38 PM
I miss the Niners being good.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:39 PM
Bud Selig’s postseason scheduling would like a word.
if you think that’s Selig’s biggest flaw, you’re misinformed.
as poorly as Selig has done, MLB is still better run than the NFL.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:39 PM
Instead of whining and complaining maybe the Dolphins shouldnt have given up a 50 yard game winning drive. Or gone 4 and out with plenty of time to win.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:40 PM
Keith DeLong was the best 59 ever.
Sergei Krivokrasov.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:40 PM
dude…im not joking. the NFL gives the steelers an advantage. there’s really no other way to explain it.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:40 PM
Alama-Francis standing up with the ball in his hands and officials saying “white ball” isn’t enough for you to change the call? Fucking horrible.
the guy that stands up with the ball didn’t necessarily recover it, especially in a situation where a touchdown is called and some people may stop fighting. its a tough call, and my gut says Dolphins recovered, but you don’t KNOW that from the replay.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:41 PM
I have Gary bettman on the line for you.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:41 PM
I used to break up opponent’s offensive lines with Michael Carter in Tecmo Bowl so that Keith DeLong could get unimpeded to the QB. Carter was a monster in that game. I was under the impression he could run down Bo Jackson in 1991.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:41 PM
Easy to hate the most successful and best run organization in professional sports. Call them the bizarro-Browns. Spencer should be happy today, celebrating Drew Brees’ worst day as a professional.

Yeap. Ike Alama-Francis.

October 25th, 2010 at 1:44 PM
I think my favorite part is Ben saying that he had the ball, and that he only let go because an official told him to. Not supported by any actual video evidence, of course.

False, I’m not sure Gary has the cognitive ability or motor skills to dial a phone.

Hmmm. I’ll see if one of the more technologically non-inept people can figure it out.

I’m gonna guess Mean Gene Steratore and his crew won’t be working any big playoff games.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:48 PM
Spencer: all credibility is lost when you say Ward is nothing but a cheapshot artist. There isn’t a player in the game who makes bigger, tougher, 3rd down catches.
As for the Steelers getting calls… when you are ALWAYS in position to win, calls that are close in tight games are magnified.
Btw… that was a TD by santonio and there was a HORRIBLE 50 yard pass interference in the super bowl against the Seahawks that wasn’t called (would have been against Randle ‘El) where the steelers then punted. That was 7 taken from the Steelers that NO ONE talks about because everyone wants to talk about the losing team getting f-ed.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:49 PM
Yes they do…because, you know, they didn’t take away our franchise QB for the first four weeks of the season for no reason whatsoever.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:49 PM
Take off your gold glasses. The officials were saying white ball, the Dolphins recovered that ball.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:50 PM
thanks for the update, Mr. Rooney.

October 25th, 2010 at 1:51 PM
Yup “I had the ball” … “She didnt say no”
October 25th, 2010 at 1:51 PM
How’d that 220 million payroll work out this year?
they have 27 titles. i’m pretty sure that facefucks the stillers total.
and there’s a reason they can afford a 220 mil payroll – they make money every fucking season.

October 25th, 2010 at 1:52 PM
Ndub: First pic the guy has his hand on top of the ball on the ground then the next shot would show Legursky laying on top of the ball (if they had cherry picked that picture instead). Finally, how many times does someone stand up with the ball and NOT get position. There answer certainly is NOT never.
“The refs were saying white ball…” According to the dolphins. Look at those pictures and all I see are the refs huddling or saying touchdown. If someone said white ball, show me a ref pointing to white or calling a touchback.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:52 PM
So it was either white ball or black ball? The controversy continues to build.
October 25th, 2010 at 1:53 PM
Panther10 – Read the story and don’t just look at the pictures. There’s justification for/against each. It’s not cherry picking.

GIVE THE MAN A YELLOW BLAZER STAT! HE LEAD THE LEAGUE IN TOUGH 3RD DOWN CATCHES EVERY YEAR HE WAS IN THE LEAGUE!
you can’t be serious.
no it wasn’t a TD.
but keep thinking that the refs “taking 7 away” makes up for the fact that the seahawks had bullshit called against them THE ENTIRE GAME.
not surprising that a steeler fan thinks a serial rapist should play.

The Yankees take advantage of a broken system. Nothing more. What the Steelers are able to do in a league designed to make everyone finish 8-8 is so much more impressive than the Yankees buying rings it’s not even funny.

Geoffrey gets it. Take the win and get out of town, it’s not your fault the ref’s fucked it up. Stop trying to make the call correct to satisfy your delusion about the purity of your franchise.
October 25th, 2010 at 2:00 PM
too bad it’s not as impressive as what the pats and colts have done.
October 25th, 2010 at 2:00 PM
How is it possible that there’s a fanbase that tops the Yankees in terms of obnoxiousness? I would’ve never thought it possible until this thread.
because people are saying, that maybe, perhaps, there isn’t incontrovertable evidence that Miami definitely recovered? like I said, I think they did too, but everyone saying they know, KNOW, beyond doubt, I disagree with that statement.
October 25th, 2010 at 2:01 PM
Ndub: Read it and looked at it. The person in that first pick who is “closest” to possession is the arm coming in from the right that has the hand on top of the ball pushing into the ground. Literally a split second later Legursky comes in and the ball is directly under him.
Look if I was forced to choose, I’d say Miami likely had recovered, but that’s not how the rule is written. People are acting like this is so cut and dry.
Spence: Not kidding.

what lead you to this conclusion? stop just looking at the yankees payroll every year and check out the top 10 payrolls in the league and where those teams finished.
there are plenty of fans on here that can tell you that spending money doesn’t equal a world series, a playoff birth or even a winning record.
October 25th, 2010 at 2:04 PM
Refs thought it was 2005 all over again and thought they were once again paid to give Ben an extra yard and call touchdown in all close-calls. Sadly, they only reserve that special treatment for Super Bowls.
Ben There, Raped That
October 25th, 2010 at 2:04 PM
Exactly.
October 25th, 2010 at 2:05 PM
Yes..The Pats haven’t won a ring since they made Belichick stop secretly taping teams and the Colts have 1 Super Bowl since Manning got there. 2 great organizations though, certainly. Can’t go wrong there.
Also, most Steeler fans do realize the call was blown. Of course they fumbled, and of course they didn’t recover. What should they do, give the win back?

With the gift against Seattle, the Steelers have the same amount of titles as the Broncos and less than the Patriots since the salary cap was put in place. There are also about 10-15 NFL teams more valuable than the Steelers, including the Browns and Ravens, two teams withing Pitt’s own division. Which is surprising considering how much money the Rooneys have tied up in casinos.
They are hardly the most successful or best run franchise in pro sports.

October 25th, 2010 at 2:20 PM
Alright, while money is by no means the end game, there’s has to be a correlation between wins and money spent in baseball. And despite Omar Minaya’s best efforts, there is probably causation accompanying that correlation. Anyone got a regression available?
October 25th, 2010 at 2:21 PM
Is this your christmas card quote this year? I appreciate the kind words.
October 25th, 2010 at 2:23 PM
Ben said he could feel the football in the pile – not that he had possession.
October 25th, 2010 at 2:26 PM
Found this on the internet, but couldn’t find the article backing it up (domain blocked at work)
October 25th, 2010 at 2:28 PM
Ben said he could feel the football in the pile – not that he had possession.
October 25th, 2010 at 2:29 PM
See the NFL will actually go out of its way to apologise to the Rooneys. Where as every other team the NFL pisses on without even the decency to call it rain.
October 25th, 2010 at 2:29 PM
Yes, I do. You see, Belichick was caught CHEATING!!!. None of you Steeler hating idiots want to discuss that conspiracy theory? Where’s the tapes Mr. Goodell?
October 25th, 2010 at 2:31 PM
One could also look like a complete idiot by arguing this.
October 25th, 2010 at 2:34 PM
I agree that Patriots fans and Steelers fans accusing each others teams of cheating and NFL favoritism is very pot/kettle
October 25th, 2010 at 2:35 PM
What the fuck do horse tracks and slot machines have to do with owning a football team? It’s not like they own the MGM fucking Grand! Let me guess Spencer, they’re fixing games too? You have some serious issues.
October 25th, 2010 at 2:35 PM
Not if you like making money.
October 25th, 2010 at 2:38 PM
You’re right. If you want to take winning completely out of the sports equation, then you could make that argument.
October 25th, 2010 at 2:43 PM
I’m not what was more amusing: the amount of Steeler fans that came out of the wood work to defend this play or all the regulars who engaged them like it was going to be some sort of rational debate. I can see Spence’s hyperbole is in mid-season form, but I’d expect nothing less.
October 25th, 2010 at 2:46 PM
YOU CANNOT OWN A FOOTBALL TEAM IF YOU HAVE BUSINESS IN GAMBLING.
unless you’re a rooney, of course.
October 25th, 2010 at 2:50 PM
October 25th, 2010 at 2:51 PM
Horrible quote job there…
October 25th, 2010 at 2:52 PM
that’s fine and dandy…they should just vacate any and all wins accrued during that period where they were flaunting their preferred status in the face of the rest of the rule-abiding league.
but it’s easy to fling poo at others when the poo is all yours, ya hurd?
October 25th, 2010 at 2:53 PM
those six rings must’ve getting in the way.
/typical stiller fan response
October 25th, 2010 at 2:53 PM
BEEN getting in the way…
fuck it…i’ll show myself out.
October 25th, 2010 at 2:54 PM
Spence – If you were offered to trade the Lerners for the Rooneys, would you say yes in a heartbeat or would you pause to think of a clever way to say yes?
October 25th, 2010 at 2:56 PM
id pause and think of something clever.
October 25th, 2010 at 2:57 PM
Or, they’ll just continue to win, year after year. And the city of Cleveland will continue to lose, year after year. Myself, I miss the rivalry, back in the days when it was a rivalry. Now, it’s just one ass whoopin after another and having to hear whining Browns care more about the Steelers losing/cheating/head hunting than their own team winning. The most pathetic fan base in sports.
October 25th, 2010 at 2:58 PM
Also, is MLJ coming back or has Dilfer started fucking it?
October 25th, 2010 at 3:03 PM
Every call ever eh??? Reality check, Playoff game vs Jax at home a couple of years ago and Gerrard runs for 20 yards on a 4th down to set up the game winner, there was a blatant hold not called, so bad that the league apologized a couple of days later for the blown call. This trumps that, and easily. When the ref signaled TD the Steelers stopped fighting for the ball and of course a Fins player will come out with it. Miami was getting the majority of the penalty calls anyways (2 holds on Legursky on same drive) Refs should have determined who recovered the fumble, taken their time, then reviewed it.
The reality is Miami lost this game by failing to get in the endzone and settling for FG’s (esp. the first 2 turnovers)so everyone can bring the hate and bitch and moan til they feel better, it’s still a W, and if it was your team, you’d enjoy this shade of gray as well, don’t be hypocritical.
October 25th, 2010 at 3:04 PM
i think we all know that the most pathetic fanbase in sports is the michigan wolverines fanbase, thank you very much.
lazarus, brah. motherfuckin’ lazarus.
October 25th, 2010 at 3:06 PM
Ooooh, forgot as well, the ‘running into the kicker’ during the playoff game in Nashville as well. That was def a call that was embelished and directly cost yet another playoff game after the retry was good from 5 yards closer…..but yeah, the Steelers get all the calls, silly me.
October 25th, 2010 at 3:06 PM
Look around at a sporting event in Pittsburgh. It could literally be mistaken for a zoo. It is a horrifying experience….And that smell, my gawd that smell.
October 25th, 2010 at 3:07 PM
I say we go by passing yards and regular season wins.
/bsanders
October 25th, 2010 at 3:08 PM
inbreeding will forever be unacceptable……Pittsburgh takes the cake.
October 25th, 2010 at 3:09 PM
like the rich don’t inbreed too…
you’d have to be inbred to think that michigan football is entertaining.
October 25th, 2010 at 3:10 PM
What are you 19?
October 25th, 2010 at 3:10 PM
Sad face
October 25th, 2010 at 3:11 PM
that means we’re coming back. or are you sad we’re coming back?
either way…WE’RE COMING BACK.
/subject to maybe change
October 25th, 2010 at 3:15 PM
I missed the analogy, I knew Lazarus was dead, forgot he was raised from the dead. Whatever, good stuff.
/Awaits Flacco staredown
October 25th, 2010 at 3:17 PM
each of us get one more crack at that unibrow’d asshole. i expect vengeance for us both.
well…at least one of us.
the one of us i don’t root for.
YOU SHUT UP.
October 25th, 2010 at 3:21 PM
I will be rooting for the Browns
/Wait, am I allowed to root for a giant earthquake? Not happening? Ok
//Browns it is
October 25th, 2010 at 3:24 PM
as someone who knows what it’s like to root for futility…i’d advise you to not root for the earthquake. it’s much more gratifying to root for hail.
October 25th, 2010 at 3:35 PM
There is a difference between asking whether payroll helps the Yankees at all, and stating that payroll is the reason the Yankees win and that they aren’t a well run organization.
October 25th, 2010 at 3:45 PM
Gotta stick to what you know. California is earthquake country, what is this hail you speak of?
October 25th, 2010 at 3:54 PM
Never said they’re not well run. Just saying they aren’t run as well as the Steeler organization. With their budget and resources, they should win the World Series every 3 years at a mimimum. Sort of like the Niners did in the 80′s which forced the salary cap.
October 25th, 2010 at 5:05 PM
Unfortunately, this is becoming a recurring theme in today’s NFL.
October 25th, 2010 at 7:08 PM
A win is a win so everyone needs to stop crying and move on. And stop useing the F-BOMB AND GROW UP .Kids do read your replys jerks.
October 25th, 2010 at 7:59 PM

October 25th, 2010 at 8:15 PM
