NBA “Gearing Up” To Overtake MLB as Nation’s 2nd Most Popular Sport
NBA vs. MLB: “The NBA is gearing up to supplant Major League Baseball as the nation’s No. 2 sports organization, a surge reflected by TV ratings if not gate receipts. The 2010 NBA Finals pitting the Celtics against the Los Angeles Lakers averaged 18.1 million viewers on ABC, trailing the 2009 World Series battle between the New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies (19.3 million on Fox). That said, the NBA beat baseball in the 18-49 demo as the seven-game title series earned a 7.3 rating compared with a 6.2 for the six-game World Series.” [Hollywood Reporter]

Will a Lebron-Kobe final bring in even more viewers this year? Probably.
October 19th, 2010 at 10:59 AM
NBA reg season starts in one week! Ballin’
October 19th, 2010 at 11:00 AM
And next year’s lockout will take all of that momentum away.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:00 AM
As Lakers/Celts is probably the best matchup for the NBA in terms of ratings, the only way I see that number going up is if the Heat make the finals. Everyone will be watching and hoping they lose.

October 19th, 2010 at 11:01 AM
I’m going to attach myself to the OKC bandwagon, hopefully get a bunch of games on TV this year. Lord knows the Raptors won’t be worth watching.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:02 AM
At this point, what is #4 most popular sport? NASCAR, UFC/MMA, Hockey, Soccer (EPL), any other?
October 19th, 2010 at 11:02 AM
Too bad the NBA hasn’t figured out how to turn that ratings bonanza into money.

It’s an NFL world and we’re all just living in it.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:03 AM
I am sure MLB execs weren’t too disappointed in the NYY-PHI match up last year.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:04 AM
Not killed by any means, but won. Not that it matters.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:04 AM
Meh.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:04 AM
Bobcats brought it last night.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:05 AM

October 19th, 2010 at 11:05 AM
Well, I should say that the amount that it’s actually relevant versus the how big a deal sports radio and bloggers make out of it is a bit of a mismatch.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:05 AM
So lets think about this.
Two MLB teams who are separated by like 150 miles completely alienating 90% of the country lost to another finals between two teams on completely different coasts drew more viewers?
Well color me shocked.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:05 AM

Probably depends on geography.

potential lockout, i’d bet it wont happen. NFL? i’d bet some cig $

October 19th, 2010 at 11:06 AM

in my eyes, the golf majors are more relevant than both of these events.

Per Tony Bruno, who’s filling in today for DP, NFL got a 7.2 and MLB got a 6.5.
Cut the fucking WNBA.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:08 AM
The NBA is definitely on an upswing. Outside of Minnesota, Cleveland and Toronto, every team has talent or at a minimum a young player who is worth watching/following. You also have a ton of competition in both conferences for the top 3-4 seeds and then it’s anybody’s guess who’s in the playoffs after that.
Should be fun.

Yankees Fans Throw Debris, Bottles into Texas Bullpen [Crossing Broad]
Awesome
This once again proves the wisdom of putting bullpens right by the cheap seats in a stadium. What could possibly go wrong? I mean, besides chair throwing.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:09 AM
Hell yeah. Lee Watson brings in the eyeballs.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:09 AM
Irish, I think it’s the other way around. The NBA owners aren’t going to cave and are willing to wait until the players who live paycheck to paycheck start pushing the union to cave. Just like the last lockout.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:10 AM
blah, blah point blah, blah is better than blah, blah point blah blah.

baseball is still a better sport and will always be. i don’t care how many people aged whatever to whatever like it whatever percent more than whomever.
i will say this…tim mccarver sucks.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:10 AM
This.
Sad part is, a Texas/SF Series would probably be a ratings disaster. I will watch, because I like baseball.
MLB >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> NBA
October 19th, 2010 at 11:10 AM
Awesome
they didnt show the fan on the field last night. whats up with that? and when they showed the beer bottle being tossed in the pen last night, it was for a brief second. happened any other city, be all over but no
October 19th, 2010 at 11:11 AM
I doubt they lose a full season though, the last one showed that these guys actually need to keep collecting paychecks so unless their union reps are helping them build up a little better emergency fund they’ll be fucked again
October 19th, 2010 at 11:11 AM
Just like the last lockout
so the season would start in Feb. 50 game reg season. NBA haters would love that

For me, CBB>MLB>>>NBA. Short term I think the Lebron/Wade/Bosh thing will heighten general interest. Will be curious to see if it lasts.

MLB could drive up short-term interest from Joe Casual Fan by putting all of their superstars on a few teams, but I think they are content with their record digital media and merchandising revenue.

Baseball is done. They have no star power. In the 80′s and 90′s you could rattle off 10 to 15 stars of the game who were visibly noticeable on T.V and advertising. Now? Jeter/Arod…who else? NBA kills it in marketing (especially globally).
October 19th, 2010 at 11:20 AM
Most NBA players use the 1st few months as a pre season anyways. It’s not like people are clamoring for more games.

Baseball is actually my favorite sport. But for some reason I enjoy talking NBA more than anything. I think the stat-heads have sort of ruined baseball discussions a bit as you can win any argument you want with the right stats. As long as NickP doesn’t return, the NBA discussions don’t typically happen this way.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:22 AM
Most NBA players use the 1st few months as a pre season anyways.
NBA players use the preseason to prepare for the regular season. that is a crucial time for putting in new schemes and mastering the old ones. never heard NBA players use the 1st few months as a preseason

Used to know almost every baseball player, but whoever brought it up first is dead on – star power is non-existent. The NBA had the same problem in the early 2000′s. You had Shaq, Kobe, AI, TMac, Vince. That’s seriously about it. They tried to make Steve Francis a star. Steve Francis.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:29 AM
Correct. This explains why “Keeping up with the Kardashians” is higher rated than any of the quality programming on AMC.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:30 AM
Harbaugh – I had the avatar up since a day or two before the MSU game…and they lost the last two. Now it is down…time will tell.
The defense will still suck, but they’ll win if they do not turn the ball over. Just like the Lions.

/yes, you whooped our asses…and yes, im extremely bitter
October 19th, 2010 at 11:31 AM
You know, I went to my first live football game in two years this season. Between the ticket prices, parking, food cost, time commitment with tailgating, standing in line to take a piss, waiting in the parking lot to leave, missing the majority of the other games that day, and my team getting their ass kicked, I have to say, I prefer it at home or the bar too. Anyone else like this, or am I in the minority here?
October 19th, 2010 at 11:32 AM
You watch Jersey Shore. C’mon now.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:32 AM
I don’t think baseball’s problem is star-power, it’s villains. You either watch a game to cheer for someone or against them but in baseball there is really only one villain (Yankees) and another up and coming villain (Red Sox) but other than that, nobody really cares.
In the NBA, you have the Lakers and Celtics to cheer against and you now have a new Super-Villain, the Heat. People will choose sides which is going to drive interest way up.
Baseball just needs to get more players for us to hate.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:33 AM
Stevie Franchise was an exciting player, he was certainly marketable. He even got name dropped in a Lil Flip song.
He fell off hard at the end, but he had a nice run.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:33 AM
The NBA’s regular season is completely worthless. But as far as the artistic nature of the game, it’s still incredible to watch. That’s why it has the entertainment edge IMO. Nothing like watching those guys athletically doing the things that they can do (except Darko. Who I saw up close at the Carrier Dome in a preseason game the other day. Few guys in the league validate their worthlessness on a play-to-play basis like him).
October 19th, 2010 at 11:34 AM
i like em both. going to college games is way better than going to pro games.

Cardinals, Twins, MethSox also fall into the Villian category, at least for me.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:35 AM
Have you had great seats? Night and day. Now that I’ve been spoiled, I will never go to a basketball game without great seats. Sitting courtside is infinitely better and it’s a whole different experience.
Football, I can sit anywhere in the stadium and have a great time. As long as someone gives me free seats.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:35 AM
The NBA’s regular season is completely worthless.
seedings mean nothing? i can understand you saying that since your Cavs have been regular season champs the past couple years and flamed out in the end
October 19th, 2010 at 11:35 AM
This.
I’m probably more of a Sixers fan than an actual NBA fan. That being the case, the state of my team generally reflects how I feel about that sport and right now, I’m not real high on the Sixers or the NBA (I think Evan Turner might be Fraudy McFraudenstein, but I hope I’m wrong).
I will admit that I will still take every opportunity to root against the Los Angeles Kobes except when they play the Miami Lebrons.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:36 AM
You managed to lose a game last year and win the B10. Vest is probably over that loss already. He’s probably excited about being the guest of honor at the Blue Jackets game tomorrow.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:36 AM
I did before football season. Now? Haven’t seen an ep in over a month, unless it’s on a marathon at some weird time when nothing else is on.

of course not, just saying with the eyeball test comment of yours, gortat is all nba
October 19th, 2010 at 11:37 AM
Essentially agree. I’m getting the same way with just about any event now (concerts, etc.). Paying for parking and sitting in the parking lot for an hour after the game in traffic are the bane of my existence if I just paid $100/ticket plus everything else you mentioned.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:38 AM
i know irish was kidding
October 19th, 2010 at 11:38 AM
i prefer to be farther away for football games. up close is kinda lame…my fam has seats on the goalline near the dawg pound, 5 rows from the field and the view is underwhelming to say the least.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:39 AM
Irish, true, Cavs completely overvalued the regular season the last few years (which I continually pointed out why the Cavs bloggers lashed out at me).
But all the regular season should be used for is to stay healthy. Home court is really not that valuable (although maybe more valuable in the finals than anything else). If you have someone like Kobe on your team, you can steal homecourt in one game so easily.
Nobody is trying to win 70 like that Bulls did (although the league was god-awful that year).
October 19th, 2010 at 11:40 AM
Yep, I’ve been on the field for big college football games, and it kinda blows. You can’t see anything. Cool to hear the players, but when it’s loud you can’t even do that.
Now NBA on the other hand – if you’re near the court, it’s ridiculously cool.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:40 AM
I truly hate anything that makes me pay more than $10 for parking. Related, Lebatard on his show mentioned that parking was $50 for one of the preseason Heat games 4 blocks away. I would rather be parachuted in than pay that insane price.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:40 AM
Cursed – I’m not paying $50 for 300 level seats let alone $185 for 100 level seats. Don’t care about basketball enough to invest that kind of cash in going to a game. I’ll take my $95 hockey seats, or the $30 300 level hockey seats.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:41 AM
I pay extra for good concert seats or try to see people in smaller venues. I love me some live music.

agree. Magic played all their stars late in the reg season in order to take the home court advantage away from the Cavs. didnt work in the end because they got beat by the Celtics

October 19th, 2010 at 11:42 AM
Just in reference to your pop, sizzle, buzz thing. Almost everyone has a show like that they watch. And yes, I’ll pay the $15 to go see Jackass 3D and laugh for 2 hours at idiots doing stupid things. Diversionary entertainment for me.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:42 AM
Holy shit!! I’d rather parachute in with a broken parachute and take my chances. That’s fucked up.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:43 AM
This. Absolutely. But I’m finding there is more enjoyment in a local minor league baseball game than an MLB game the same way I’d rather see a local band in a small venue than a big group at a major stadium.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:43 AM
Depends if Hogan, Nash, or Hall get hurt.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:44 AM

October 19th, 2010 at 11:45 AM
Like Lady Gaga?
October 19th, 2010 at 11:45 AM
Might as well throw it down. One advantage nobody talks about is how this team will live at the free throw line. I’m guessing the Heat will start out like gang busters, but then Wade will start having some of those annoying injuries -and the Heat will realize that it’s more important to stay healthy.
They have no answer inside for the Lakers or the Magic, heck even the Celts will punish them inside. Nevermind that every team will be gunning for them and have sellout, hostile crowds.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:45 AM

Movie prices are fucking ridiculous now. $30 for 2 tickets to a 3D movie, $20 for a popcorn and two pops. I’m going to illegally download every movie I want to see in the theater from here on out.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:50 AM
That’s because you are watching the Browns play.
/Agreed about sitting farther back
October 19th, 2010 at 11:51 AM
Will someone who knows anything about business explain to me how a movie theater wouldn’t get more people to a theater with cheap food/drinks? If they were giving that shit away, wouldn’t you be more apt to go?
October 19th, 2010 at 11:51 AM
Go out to dinner beforehand. Or sneak in pop like our mom had us do way back in the day.

You paid someone to give you popcorn and then hit you in face?

go to the machine and buy kids tickets. the 14 year olds working the door never look at the tickets
October 19th, 2010 at 11:53 AM
The theater makes most of its money from concessions, the studios get a big cut of the gate
October 19th, 2010 at 11:54 AM
Damn your memories!!
Hell yes, like LG. I dropped two bills on VIP seats. My ass was front row. It was legit.
/looks for Jersey to make the tag…..

Go to the right theater and you can bring in stubs from a previous movie and they won’t even bother checking. You can even pick a stub up on teh ground on the way in. This actually works every at the Showplace 16 in Naperville.
It’s also where I almost got in a fight with four kids who thought I was a student at a nearby school when I’m actually a teacher there.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:55 AM
maybe the browns would be better if the NFL gave them special treatment all the time like they give the steelers.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:55 AM
For a popcorn and two lollipops? That is ridicsauce. Or did you mean two sodas?

my son was at my mother-in-laws last weekend and was watching Wall Street 2 on her computer. She was amazed, & wanted to start doing that.
I told my son he’s on his own when the FCC or NARAS comes after his 75 y/o Grandma for illegally downloading movies
October 19th, 2010 at 11:56 AM
It’s pretty much the only way the theaters make their money. I believe studios licensing fees are crazy high and are based on the number of seats in your theater.

Don’t move up here. $12 per ticket for an afternoon matinee, plus at least $12 more for 2 drinks and popcorn. Haven’t seen a movie in the theater for a long time.
October 19th, 2010 at 11:57 AM
That’s fine, but wouldn’t the revenue produced by the increased amount of people going to the movie with cheaper food/drinks outweigh the fewer people going now (many of which refuse to spend a dime at concessions?)
October 19th, 2010 at 11:57 AM
what the hell is soda?
/don’t really want to start this one

i like your style

By this logic nothing should be priced high, it’s simple supply and demand…and I don’t think the movie industry is hurting at all, if anything the recession has helped it because $20 for two tickets is still cheaper than a lot of other entertainment options for people who still want to go out

Jersey does not respond, as he is still hungover from the Bieber concert….gets drug back in the ring
October 19th, 2010 at 12:03 PM
The $15 per ticket price was matinee. I went at 1:15. Basically I’m either restricting myself to only seeing movies at the IMAX ($17 for a regular ticket and the popcorn is cheaper) or I’m only seeing movies when I go visit my parents (matinee price is $6).

Love the NBA, and love the White Sox. I don’t really give a shit about any other baseball team, but I seriously doubt the NBA will overtake MLB for a while at least

Ouch. We have to really limit the spending at the movie theater. One movie at night for the wife and I is $40 + babysitter. Can almost get two tickets in the upper deck for the Oil for that.

“ratings” being defined as a comparison between the championship series only. One time.

sounds like me and 99.9 percent of the non-basketball assocation. if dwayne wade stood in front of me right now, i wouldn’t know it.

i know i’m in the minority on this site: i can count on my two hands the number of minutes i’ve watched the nba over the past decade. used to be a huge fan. that ended long ago.
for me: cfb, nfl, mlb, nhl, cbb… even nascar > nba.
both the nba and golf are totally off my radar. i literally couldn’t name 10 players from each sport.
October 19th, 2010 at 1:15 PM
MLB = best postseason in sports.
NFL = national pastime, based more on ancillary factors than the sport itself (betting, fantasy, excuse to party and drink weekly, etc).
NBA = the fastest rising sport in this country. The reasons people give for the reasons soccer will supposedly rise in this country applies to basketball. The NBA is putting out a better product than the other two right now.
