Aaron Rodgers and Green Bay Can’t Seem to Win the Close Games. Why?
Aaron Rodgers: The Packers fell to 3-3 with a 23-20 overtime loss at home to Miami. Green Bay’s three losses are by a combined nine points. Yes, injuries on offense and defense have taken their toll. All Super Bowl talk has been curtailed for the moment. Two Aaron Rodgers stats to ponder: Colin Cowherd floated this morning that the Packers’ QB is 7-13 in games decided by seven points or less. Greg Bedard of the Journal Sentinel followed that up with this shocker – Rodgers is a staggering 1-11 in games decided by four points or less. Obviously nobody’s calling Rodgers a choker … but we’ll hang up now and listen to Packers fans attempt to explain this.

Oh, someone will. I give it 10 comments.
October 18th, 2010 at 1:47 PM
What are his teammates records in these games?
October 18th, 2010 at 1:50 PM
The offensive line is 0-78 against the defensive lines they go against…not saying Rodgers is without fault but in the last two overtimes against Washington and Miami he’s been a sitting duck back there without time to throw
Still wonder what Cowherd has against the guy…still bitter over Cal beating USC in 2003 or something?
October 18th, 2010 at 1:50 PM
FEEEEEETTTTTTCCHHHHHHHH!!!! LEEEEEEEFFFFFTTTTYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!! Get in here. NOW!!!
October 18th, 2010 at 1:50 PM
Because Aaron Rodgers is a big fat choker. Big numbers in a loss are just that.
October 18th, 2010 at 1:51 PM
What are his teammates records in these games?
sorry, they don’t keep records for other players. So let’s assume undefeated.
October 18th, 2010 at 1:51 PM
You know what this post tells me? Aaron Rodgers has low sack numbers. He should probably be more effective running the ball. And he needs to be a better coach.
October 18th, 2010 at 1:51 PM
Also the Packer special teams are an abortion, the penalty that kept a TD drive going for the Dolphins was just terrible and they had another penalty negating what should have been good starting field position in overtime…Percy Harvin is taking three kicks back next Sunday
October 18th, 2010 at 1:52 PM
Isn’t this why Jason Lisk was hired? Can’t we give him this one?
October 18th, 2010 at 1:53 PM
Wouldn’t be a problem if Rodgers was a better gunner and/or longsnapper.
October 18th, 2010 at 1:55 PM
The more sensible version of this question was so easy and so close.
The Packers are 1-11 in their last 12 games decided by four points or fewer. We’ll hang up now and wait for Packers fans to try to explain this.
October 18th, 2010 at 1:56 PM
Lisk deals in logic, TBL is a believer in the Cowherd “Move the Needle” approach
Rodgers should be playing better and his season to this point is just another disappointment but this is just an overly simplistic sports talk radio topic
October 18th, 2010 at 1:56 PM
Aaron Rodgers does a terrible job of not preventing terrible Packer defensive penalties and not making his o-line false start.
Also, why does he intentionally injure his best receiver, RB and LB for the season?
October 18th, 2010 at 1:57 PM
Oh, how I wish the 49ers braintrust would have selected him over Alex Smith.
/fuck you Mike Nolan
October 18th, 2010 at 1:57 PM
I personally blame the Packers FG blocking group. I mean to allow 2 FG’s in OT two weeks in a row without a block is just sad.
October 18th, 2010 at 1:58 PM
Rodgers is a staggering 1-11 in games decided by four points or less
7 of those losses were in his first season as a starter, making them about as relevant as Clinton Portis.
And I just confirmed via an exhaustive amount of research that other players also played for the Green Bay Packers during those games.
October 18th, 2010 at 1:59 PM
You should also say fuck Mike McCarthy who championed for Smith when he was the OC there
Still think McCarthy gives up on the run too quick, they’ve gotten some decent gains the last couple weeks but never stick with it
October 18th, 2010 at 1:59 PM
Oh, how I wish the 49ers braintrust would have selected him over Alex Smith.
They would have thrown him to the wolves – might have turned out the same.
October 18th, 2010 at 1:59 PM
it’s monday. he’s got all week on this one.
October 18th, 2010 at 1:59 PM
Bullshit. You crazy man. Aaron Rodgers lost those close games. I mean, he is the one with the W-L record, right?
October 18th, 2010 at 2:00 PM
I think you should look at how the Packers lost those games and what the Packers did on the possession preceding the game-winning drive/play. Rodgers will get labelled a choker because they went 3-and-out in OT, but he led them to a game-tying TD at the end of regulation to send it to OT. The real question: is it possible to quantify how much leadership a QB exudes over the rest of his team? (i.e. if BrettFar was still in Green Bay with the same players Rodgers has, would they be any better off?) The other question: Was Cowturd mercilessly teased and bullied growing up? He seems like one of those guys that could go workplace-shooter at any moment.
October 18th, 2010 at 2:01 PM
Crosby missed two game-winning field goals that season too…perhaps Rodgers needs to learn how to kick
I should just return to doing work now, the whole concept of this post is making me assy
October 18th, 2010 at 2:01 PM
And I just confirmed via an exhaustive amount of research that other players also played for the Green Bay Packers during those games.
Link?
October 18th, 2010 at 2:02 PM
Bullshit. You crazy man. Aaron Rodgers lost those close games. I mean, he is the one with the W-L record, right?
I’m not denying that. All wins and losses land directly on the quarterback, unless they’re losses, the uni is green, and the QB has started less than say 25 games in his pro career. Oh, and Mejicano.
October 18th, 2010 at 2:03 PM
Its skewed by 2008 where they went 0-7 in close games, I believe and a lot of those were choked away by a completely ruined defense.
Even worse, the Packers last five losses dating back to last year have all been on the last play (Bears FG with a few seconds remaining).
/Just win Sunday Night.
October 18th, 2010 at 2:04 PM
So am I the only one who takes pleasure in knowing that all those assholes who keep clogging up my facebook page with their farmville and Mafia wars updates have been getting their information sold to companies?
October 18th, 2010 at 2:04 PM
Just as accurate.
October 18th, 2010 at 2:04 PM
Trap post
October 18th, 2010 at 2:05 PM
Aaron Rodgers is such a choker. His chokiest play of the year was when he completed that ball on the outside to James Jones late in the Chicago game and then preceeded to rip the ball out of Jones’ hands, thus giving Chicago the ball. Then, Rodgers didn’t even let the Bears score so they wound down the clock and let them kick the winning FG with 4 seconds left.
/this is what we’re doing here right?
October 18th, 2010 at 2:06 PM
When teams consistently lose close games you can almost always blame the coaching…
October 18th, 2010 at 2:07 PM
In the losses his defense has given up an average of 24.2 points per game and he’s turned the ball over a total of 12 times… no more than 1 turnover in any of those games. Only 5 happened at home.
Misleading. Next.
HI GUYS! Sorry, busy with work. I got promoted and didn’t even know I was up for one. I’ll be around for some hockey talk later.

October 18th, 2010 at 2:08 PM

jay, try to stay on topic here. We are surreptitiously shitting on a quarterback, and trying to equate his name to choking without having to say so.
There’s no room for that other nonsense here.
October 18th, 2010 at 2:08 PM
October 18th, 2010 at 2:08 PM
Oh, and those are in the losses where it was 7 points or less. To be clear.
/returns to pile of papers on desk

Isn’t this why Jason Lisk was hired? Can’t we give him this one?
it’s monday. he’s got all week on this one
just curious: is this a full-time gig for lisk–time and paywise?
October 18th, 2010 at 2:08 PM
Yeah man. What the fuck? Focus.
October 18th, 2010 at 2:09 PM
oh, hi sc, did you see mancrush got 2nd star in NHL last week?
second?!
October 18th, 2010 at 2:09 PM
Aaron Rodgers has low sack numbers.
Yeah his testicles haven’t descended yet.
October 18th, 2010 at 2:09 PM
Easiest explanation ever? The Packers lose close games a lot. Good, but not good enough. Teams win and lose games, not individual players.
October 18th, 2010 at 2:09 PM
There’s this Cowherd commercial running where he’s complaining “He hasnt even won a playoff game! Even Romo’s won a playoff game!” Never mind he’s started for 2 seasons, and has only PLAYED in ONE playoff game. So mind numbingly stupid.
October 18th, 2010 at 2:10 PM
assy > gassy
October 18th, 2010 at 2:10 PM
Christ, hadn’t even realized this…obviously Rodgers needed to play free safety in that game against the Steelers they lost 37-36 on the final snap
And 45 points scored in a playoff game? Fuck you son, needed 46
October 18th, 2010 at 2:11 PM
You know what Rodgers would’ve done if he was a real leader? He would’ve punched McCarthy right in his fat face when he decided to kick the extra point instead of go for two yesterday, then he would’ve kept the offense on the field, and made it happen on the two point play. Guess what? He didn’t. He has nice gaudy stats and all, but he’s not a leader, and not a winner. Worst of all, he has no sense of the moment.
October 18th, 2010 at 2:11 PM
Isn’t this why Jason Lisk was hired? Can’t we give him this one?
I think you guys have handled it well. Here’s what we’ll do next. A post where people predict which quarterbacks will win Super Bowls based on wins in close games in their past and how good their defenses were, versus how good they are. Also, wish I could be a GM in the same league as Colin Cowherd and Greg Bedard.
October 18th, 2010 at 2:12 PM
So am I the only one who takes pleasure in knowing that all those assholes who keep clogging up my facebook page with their farmville and Mafia wars updates have been getting their information sold to companies?
i’m no longer on FB (cuz it didn;t find me a job or staisfy me emotionally), but i am 100 percent with you
October 18th, 2010 at 2:12 PM
Defenses decided to not show up in that track meet.
October 18th, 2010 at 2:13 PM
Not worried about the Packers unless Clay Matthews misses more action. If he finishes the Skins game and plays yesterday the Packers are 5-1. Oh wait, yeah, back to punishing Aaron Rodgers for not being our kicker, safety and lining up over the center on a punt…
October 18th, 2010 at 2:14 PM
jason lisk needs to beware the banhammer, sassing the big man like that. You’re probably just jealous of the seven figures, son. They’re as low as Rodgers sack numbers.
October 18th, 2010 at 2:14 PM
it’s monday. he’s got all week on this one.
Next in line behind that 2nd and 10 series, which is forthcoming. Don’t think I’m joking either.
October 18th, 2010 at 2:14 PM
wish I could be a GM in the same league as Colin Cowherd and Greg Bedard.
J. Angelo feels left out
October 18th, 2010 at 2:14 PM
On a 10 point choking fraud scale I’d say Rodgers is around a 5 and climbing. As opposed to Phil Rivers, who is a 12.
/science
October 18th, 2010 at 2:15 PM
1. Comment on TBL all day
2. Get promotion
3. Profit
See, there IS a second step!!
October 18th, 2010 at 2:15 PM
I think you need to blame Mike McCarthy and his coaching prowess for that record. And when I mean coaching prowess I mean his ineptidude with clock management and team discipline.
October 18th, 2010 at 2:16 PM
The defense was playing fine and the Packers got the ball in OT. Also, the Packers had the ball 2nd and goal on the 1 and it took three times to get it in. Getting two yards to win it…might as well have been 15 at the time.
October 18th, 2010 at 2:16 PM
congrats sc. whatcha gonna do with the extra cabbage?
October 18th, 2010 at 2:16 PM
All of this right here.
/checks wifes FB page
//giggles
October 18th, 2010 at 2:17 PM
In the press conference today I guess they said he should be practicing by the end of the week…they were impotent trying to get to Henne yesterday
October 18th, 2010 at 2:18 PM
In yesterday’s game, Miami ran 78 offensive plays and Green Bay ran 59. Miami had the ball for 37 and green bay for 28.
I think Rodgers needs to figure out how to stop opponent’s drives.
October 18th, 2010 at 2:18 PM
congrats sc. whatcha gonna do with the extra cabbage?
nevermind. more sparklers and black and gold coke spoon
October 18th, 2010 at 2:18 PM
This is pointless. Were those 7-13 and 1-11 numbers where Rodgers had the ball on a final drive with no more than 2 minutes left? Did he throw backbreaking INTs or fumble the ball when his O-line couldn’t handle a blitz? If not, it’s NOT Rodgers’ fuck up. We have to zoom in on the nuances of each game and not just say that so and so QB” sucks in close games.
October 18th, 2010 at 2:18 PM
jason lisk needs to beware the banhammer, sassing the big man like that. You’re probably just jealous of the seven figures, son. They’re as low as Rodgers sack numbers.
You don’t sign Neon Deion if you don’t want some high-stepping.
/there’s an attempt at an analogy in there somewhere
October 18th, 2010 at 2:19 PM
Bedard tweeted that the defense “failed” Rodgers in 2008. Rodgers and the offense have had the ball in the last four OT games and are 0-4. Is it all his fault? No, but something is obviously not working.
October 18th, 2010 at 2:19 PM
Next in line behind that 2nd and 10 series, which is forthcoming.
I knew this. I saw some really awful 2nd and 10 incompletions yesterday that came after 1st and 10 incompletions. And I could feel Lisk’s heart burn.
October 18th, 2010 at 2:20 PM
/there’s an attempt at an analogy in there somewhere
2nd and analogistic 10 to go. I recommend a handoff.
October 18th, 2010 at 2:20 PM
Being better than 3-13 on third down would help…he’s not above blame for their rocky start this season but the W-L thing is just stupid
October 18th, 2010 at 2:20 PM
I’m searching the advanced NFL stats site for some numbers.
October 18th, 2010 at 2:21 PM
3rd down conversions are an issue for the offense, but the main point is correct. Without Clay Matthews, the Packers defense is very, very average.
October 18th, 2010 at 2:31 PM
Without Clay Matthews, the Packers defense is very, very average.
Lance Briggs, Bears
October 18th, 2010 at 2:48 PM
My favorite part of the Nolan/McCarthy scouting of Rodgers. They thought he was too arrogant. I’d rather have arrogance than the incompetence of Alex Smith.
October 18th, 2010 at 2:51 PM
Horaayyy, lack of context!!
October 18th, 2010 at 3:12 PM
Cowherd also discredited Rodgers in big games by speaking highly of Favre in big games. In Cowherd style, he conveniently omitted Favre ending four seasons with horrible interceptions, including 2007 and 2009 Division Playoff Games.
October 18th, 2010 at 3:13 PM
The Wonder Boy Sanchez is 3-6 in games decided by 6 points or less. He’s still one of the best though right?
October 18th, 2010 at 3:16 PM
Felix Hernandez is awful cuz he only went 13-12 WITH a 2.27 E.R.A.
It’s all the qb’s fault and the SP’s fault.
October 18th, 2010 at 3:52 PM
How many of those 11 losses by 4 points or less involved Rodgers leading the OFFENSE down the field to score and take the lead only to watch the DEFENSE pass interfere and defensive hold to allow to other team down the field to score. The problem is the defensive backfield. Rodgers is already playing QB and RB, does he have to line up at safety as well?
