Would Jay Mariotti Still Be at Fanhouse If His Lawyers Hadn’t Made This Statement Last Week?
Last week, after Jay Mariotti reached a deal with the Los Angeles city attorney’s office to drop six of the seven misdemeanor counts against him stemming from an August arrest, his lawyers finally spoke: “Jay is very pleased to have this matter behind him and is anxious to get back to work. While we are confident he would have prevailed at trial, the process would have been long and expensive. Today’s resolution — a no contest plea to a low-level misdemeanor with all of the other charges dismissed — ends the matter once and for all.” Bad move. Terrible move.
A week later, here’s how the attorney for Mariotti’s ex-girlfriend responded:
Levine said that before police intervened in August, Mariotti struck his girlfriend in the face, which resulted in a visible bruise. Mariotti also grabbed and pulled his girlfriend by the hair, destroyed her personal property, and attempted to prevent her from escaping and calling police, according to Levine. Ultimately, he said, a bystander witnessed what was going on and called police.
Previously, no details from the August incident had been made public. No mugshot was released. The police report was never made public. After the plea deal, Mariotti appeared to be in the clear. According to a media source, Fanhouse was very likely to welcome back Mariotti after the plea deal. The same source tells us that Fanhouse changed their mind Tuesday after reading the quotes from the lawyer of Mariotti’s ex-girlfriend. An email this morning to Fanhouse editor-in-chief Scott Ridge went unreturned.

Question for Jay V, Trey and the other lawyers:
This state that the woman’s lawyer issued, is it considered under oath or accredited? Or is this just something that can be issued without repercussion?
If they had this kind of evidence, methinks it would be stupid to allow Jay to settle.

This is only interesting in that it corroborates the fact that despicable on-air personalities turn out to be despicable off-air personalities.

A jealous Marriotti. Don’t know why but that made this shitty morning a little better.
October 6th, 2010 at 11:07 AM
Now I’d really love to see Telander knock his ass out.

Who is this guy’s audience? As universally hated as he is, I don’t understand how he is so popular.
October 6th, 2010 at 11:09 AM
He plea-bargained the criminal charges. The civil matter (girlfriend v. Marriotti) is still pending.
October 6th, 2010 at 11:09 AM
Do you pay attention to more negative things in the media or positive? Eyes tend to veer to trainwrecks, not the good folks.

I have no idea who watches that around the horn.

I mean, have a look at that picture again. What is happening on his skull is a mystery the entire world can appreciate.

2.5 Hours from first pitch of the playoffs!
October 6th, 2010 at 11:10 AM
The answer is in there. Think Cowherd.
October 6th, 2010 at 11:10 AM
Not considered under oath or “accredited”…it’s just her lawyer running his mouth. And, honestly, I suspect he would have said something like this no matter what Mariotti’s lawyer said.
The statement issued by Mariotti’s legal team was standard, and calling it a bad move or terrible move is way offbase.

well, we know who Trey’s attacker wasn’t at least.
October 6th, 2010 at 11:13 AM
People would’ve ripped the lawyer and Mariotti if there was no statement. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.
October 6th, 2010 at 11:13 AM
I’m confused…why exactly was it a bad move?
October 6th, 2010 at 11:14 AM
Seems pretty standard.
October 6th, 2010 at 11:15 AM
seems pretty far fetched. you dont think fanhouse would have looked into this themselves?
October 6th, 2010 at 11:15 AM
well, we know who Trey’s attacker wasn’t at least.
too bad trey. That’s why I never leave the house.

So it ain’t so Irish. What did Fitzy do? He always seemed so classy to me, never imagined him to beat girls.
October 6th, 2010 at 11:16 AM
TBL esquire, everyone.
October 6th, 2010 at 11:16 AM
Let’s put it this way: if the lawyer flat out lied, he would be disbarred in California. Ethics rules give him room for exaggeration, but no one is allowed to make up stories.
October 6th, 2010 at 11:16 AM
For some weird reason, TBL seems to believe that the only reason the attorney for the girlfriend spoke out was because of the Mariotti legal team statement. I don’t think this is even close to being correct. They were just as motivated to speak out no matter what was said by Mariotti or his lawyer…particularly is a civil action is forthcoming.

Yea, but that doesn’t mean much…he’s only relying on what his client told him.
October 6th, 2010 at 11:20 AM
I saw somewhere that Mariotti is writing a book. Who would read such a thing?
October 6th, 2010 at 11:20 AM
Given ESPN’s love of the story of him and his dad, no wonder we never heard this.

well that’s unfortunate. Apparently he got some of that worked out, he’s always doing twit pics w/ his son.
D Ho looking good for the 1st preseason game. Heavily rooting for the Magic to dismantle the “Big Two” and Chris Bosh.

Bob Brenly about to sign with Brewers as their new manager?! Hahahaha….
October 6th, 2010 at 11:24 AM
TBL,
Don’t take this wrong, but you’re completely in the dark on this. The attorney doesn’t make a statement and Mariotti is dark to the public eye.
He was being charged with a lot of serious offenses, they DA offered a sweet deal, which would suggest to me that the DA thought the case was weak.
Why do I say that? Well I’ve been working in criminal defense for 3 years as an attorney and 2 as a law student. I was a Domestic Violence attorney for awhile.
1) DV cases are taken vary seriously and are one of the few non-ultraviolent (meaning no attempt on someone’s life intentional or not) situations where the victim gets a lot of input on how the case can be resolved. You don’t get that in thefts…
2) It’s a high profile case.
And please, don’t read too much into the victim’s attorney. He’s making a remark regardless of what was said or done. They knew something like that was legal and was going to screw his career up.
All in all, 90% of america’s criminal defense attorneys would have made the remark Mariotti’s did. They’d have to.
October 6th, 2010 at 11:26 AM
I believe you mean Mr. and Mrs. Dwyane Wade and their baby boy, Chris.
Well done. I love how Shaq is already referring to them as the Big Two though, that dude hates Chris Bosh. Can’t wait for some of these matchups this year.

Or you could go with the school of thought of “Shut the fuck up, client.”. Don’t get out there and say you’re innocent but since it could get expensive, you’re not going to clear your name.
October 6th, 2010 at 11:26 AM
I love that this photo is used all the time with Mariotti.

October 6th, 2010 at 11:26 AM
True. But if your client tells you that aliens are invading the planet you can’t state the emphatically on the record. I’m guessing they have photos of the bruise and they have the witness statement.

He’s just reading the police report. That’s all. So it’s legal.
October 6th, 2010 at 11:27 AM
Wow. Poor Trey. That’s a rough weekend, dude.
October 6th, 2010 at 11:27 AM
Jay Mariotti needs to visit Jonathan’s Salon.
October 6th, 2010 at 11:28 AM
Maybe they’ll make a movie out of it. Could be one of the best bank robbery movies of all time.

Don’t take this wrong, but you’re completely in the dark on this.
I guess you’re forgetting the Pulitzer TBL & SbB earned for their McNair investigation

That’s a decent gash. How many zippers it take to close up?
October 6th, 2010 at 11:31 AM
Lefty, thoughts on the Braves? I’m trying to keep my homer/”we can actually win” cap on but it keeps falling off.
October 6th, 2010 at 11:31 AM
Were they up against Detective Cowherd and his work on the Sean Taylor case?
October 6th, 2010 at 11:32 AM
Well done.
October 6th, 2010 at 11:34 AM
I’m just happy they made the playoffs. I absolutely believe they’ll get swept. I mentioned this yesterday, but the only guys that started on Opening Day that will start tomorrow are McCann and Heyward (maybe one other, depending on who plays LF). That’s crazy.
October 6th, 2010 at 11:34 AM
Damn, I just read that. Wow.
October 6th, 2010 at 11:35 AM
Has Mariotti always been one of your media sources?
October 6th, 2010 at 11:37 AM
Same. I’m just hoping that somehow the pitching will pull of a surprise.
October 6th, 2010 at 11:49 AM
the mariotti picture needs to have a caption every time
