Where Does ‘The Town’ Rank Among the Greatest Bank Robbery Movies of All-Time?
We greatly enjoyed ‘The Town.’ Best movie we’ve seen in 2010. The only knocks on the Ben Affleck-directed flick are a) the overly thick Boston accents, b) Red Sox crap everywhere, c) no great twist/somewhat predictable ending. (Here are all the movies that came out this year – we still haven’t seen Iron Man 2, Salt, or the A-Team.) On the all-time bank robbery movies list, we’d put ‘The Town’ behind ‘The Dark Knight,’ and just ahead of ‘Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid‘ and ‘Dog Day Afternoon.’ A bit further down the list: Point Break, Inside Man, and Heat. (Tough to rank that trio, but we’d give Point Break a slight advantage over the other two). Lists to help you compile your list: Here, here, and here.

How exactly is The Dark Knight a bank robbery movie?
October 5th, 2010 at 4:04 PM
There is no way The Town is better than Heat
/hasn’t seen The Town
October 5th, 2010 at 4:05 PM
The Italian Job was a fun movie
October 5th, 2010 at 4:06 PM
Was wondering this as well. It’s really only in the opening scene.
Also, I haven’t seen The Town but I have a hard time believing I’ll think it’s better than Dog Day Afternoon or Butch Cassidy.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:06 PM
It’s like calling Fast Times at Ridgemont High a football movie.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:06 PM
I haven’t seen The Town because I have no interest in fantasies about Boston being a tough place. If you honestly think this is a better movie than Bonnie & Clyde I’m jarred. Does anybody else share this opinion?
October 5th, 2010 at 4:07 PM

October 5th, 2010 at 4:08 PM
So is the Newton Boys a bank robbery movie or a western?
October 5th, 2010 at 4:09 PM
The Town was good. Great? No.
Heat
The Bank Job
Inside Man
Dog Day Afternoon
All are much much better bank robber movies
October 5th, 2010 at 4:09 PM
fixed.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:09 PM
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid sucked because they were in Bolivia and dindn’t do any blow….

Other than Dirt, I’d struggle to find someone who might put The Town in the same class as Dog Day Afternoon. We should probably give it some time to marinate.

October 5th, 2010 at 4:10 PM
id say ocean’s 11 counts and i’d put that way up there.
was the town really that decent or does TBL just have bad taste in movies?
October 5th, 2010 at 4:11 PM
For a Few Dollars More
October 5th, 2010 at 4:11 PM
Shouldn’t the term be heist movie?
October 5th, 2010 at 4:12 PM
I watched the Family Guy season premier “And Then There Were Fewer” re-run last night on Cartoon Network. It reminded me of that one SBTB “Mystery Weekend” in which they win a competition and go to mansion, where mystery obvious ensues.
And I still need to read “And Then There Were None.”
October 5th, 2010 at 4:12 PM
This ain’t no bank robbery!
October 5th, 2010 at 4:12 PM
I thought The Town was great. The last fifteen minutes were fantastic and Afflecks final scene with Kobayashi was revenge at its best. Heat however is a far superior movie to The Town and as much as Point Break and The Inside Man are good movies they are not nearly as good as Heat is.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:12 PM
How’d we forget that one? Very good bank robbery movie

That photo had to be taken before Lively got the bolt-ons.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:13 PM
id say ocean’s 11 counts and i’d put that way up there.
How’d we forget that one? Very good bank robbery movie
except they aren’t robbing a bank. Thus heist movie.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:13 PM
I think you have to qualify what scale you’re grading Point Break on. It is extremely enjoyable and about as well shot as a film of its ilk can be, but it’s not a “good” movie.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:14 PM
I dont know — “The Town” is good and all but it’s not even close to Dog Day Afternoon and Heat. (and as much as I like Blake Lively, she was inaudible with her Boston Accent) And if we are counting “Heist” Movies the same as “Bank Robery” ‘Snatch’ is wayy better than the town. Also, I wouldnt classify TDK as a bank robbery movie in the least.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:14 PM
There is a guy in my office who thinks that Surrogates was a good movie.
I imagine he and TBL being good friends.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:14 PM
I watched the Family Guy season premier “And Then There Were Fewer” re-run last night on Cartoon Network.
I was disappointed for the most, even having gone in with low expectations. Have last Sunday’s episode on the DVR but haven’t watched yet.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:14 PM
Needs more of this.
“Is your boy cool?”
“My motherfucker’s so cool, when he goes to bed, sheep count him.”
October 5th, 2010 at 4:14 PM
I mean, technically, Die Hard is a heist movie, right?
October 5th, 2010 at 4:14 PM
It’s on my top 10 “to read” list, Lefty.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:15 PM

I’ve not seen the Town, but Dog Day Afternoon and Butch and Sundance are fucking all-time classics. can’t imagine they’re in the same league. also, I loved Inside Man
October 5th, 2010 at 4:15 PM
id say ocean’s 11 counts and i’d put that way up there.
How’d we forget that one? Very good bank robbery movie
Not the origonal, I hope. That sucked.
Yes, The Bank Job is very good.
No, The Dark Knight is not a dam bank robbery movie.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:15 PM
Christmas movie, actually.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:15 PM
I would actually be surprised if “The Town” is nominated for best picture.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:15 PM
and as much as I like Blake Lively, she was inaudible with her Boston Accent
All for the best. Have you ever heard the shit that Boston people say? It’s the only thing dumber than how they sound
October 5th, 2010 at 4:16 PM
Well Die Hard with a Vengeance is certainly a bank robbing movie.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:16 PM
‘Snatch’ is wayy better than the town. Also, I wouldnt classify TDK as a bank robbery movie in the least.
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels > Snatch

Where does the Human Centipede rank amongst the most disturbing movies of all time?
#1
/Retinas are burned forever
October 5th, 2010 at 4:17 PM
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels > Snatch
Completely agreed.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:17 PM
I thought The Town was great. The last fifteen minutes were fantastic and Afflecks final scene with Kobayashi was revenge at its best. Heat however is a far superior movie to The Town and as much as Point Break and The Inside Man are good movies they are not nearly as good as Heat is.
This wasn’t confusing at all to read.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:17 PM
I confess I missed the opening 10 or so minutes. The show’s graphics and visuals are way, way better than ever. It was actually incredible to see last night. But the quality of the show – specifically the style of humor – has increased the last two-ish years. It still has it’s spots. But I think McFarlane and Co. are getting stretched too thin with American Dad and The Cleveland Show.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:17 PM
I think you have to qualify what scale you’re grading Point Break on. It is extremely enjoyable and about as well shot as a film of its ilk can be, but it’s not a “good” movie.
good movies, IMO, are extremely rewatchable. that’s why point break is included, well, and because of the surfing.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:18 PM
You actually watched that??
October 5th, 2010 at 4:18 PM
Add Bonnie & Clyde and The Assassination of Jesse James as bank robbery movies that are much better than most of that list.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:18 PM
see audition or visitor q and THEN you’ll know what disturbing is.
/human centipede was pretty gnarly tho
October 5th, 2010 at 4:18 PM
Pulp Fiction is a great S&M movie.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:19 PM
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels > Snatch
Completely agreed.
And now I’m going to have to pull out the DVD again.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:19 PM
The Sting is a great heist movie. Inception was also a great heist movie. The Dark Knight is nowhere near a “bank robbery” movie. I have no clue how you came to that conclusion.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:19 PM
I think Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels is a better heist movie than a lot of the movies mentioned in here. I’d put it above Point Break, and I’d listen to arguments putting it above Ocean’s 11.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:19 PM
Go to any game at The Horseshoe and you’ll grow to dislike all things Johnny Utah.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:19 PM
lol
October 5th, 2010 at 4:20 PM
Jeremy Renner was quite good in “The Town”, Affleck was alright and everyone else was OK. It’s a good movie and all, I think I may have went into it with big expectations and it ended up being just good, not great.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:20 PM
agreed.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:20 PM
So, TBL says The Town was the best movie he’s seen this year.
Commentariat: Inception or The Town? (and there are probably a few who think neither and that’s OK)
Also, has anyone seen Let Me In?
October 5th, 2010 at 4:20 PM
Arranges to meet Rex and bsanders as they head to clown’s.
/continues to collect FSV paychecks
October 5th, 2010 at 4:20 PM
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels > Snatch
loved both, but can’t agree. snatch is my #1 film.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:20 PM
The Dark Knight is not a bank robbery movie but it did have a fantastic bank robbing scene.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:20 PM
Audition is an awesome movie. Can OldBoy and Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance get some “most disturbing” votes or is incest not disturbing enough? Anybody else watched the Hanzo the Razor trilogy?
October 5th, 2010 at 4:20 PM
The Town is a good solid movie. It will be totally rewatchable on FX over the next few years, but it’s not that great.
Affleck’s character opened up a little too easily for a hardened bank-robber.
Blake Lively was horrific.
The thing they robbed at the end wasn’t anything special other than being that thing. (I hope this makes sense, but really you could have replaced it for just about anything–bank, racetrack, etc.)
There’s NO WAY it’s better than Heat.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:20 PM
Johnny Utah > Shane Falco
October 5th, 2010 at 4:20 PM
No one’s mentioned “The Thomas Crown Affair” in the heist movie discussion?
October 5th, 2010 at 4:21 PM
But I think McFarlane and Co. are getting stretched too thin with American Dad and The Cleveland Show.
This is the problem right here.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:21 PM
Uh, the original Ocean’s 11, even with all the camp, was pretty good. And it doesn’t have a happy ending, which bumps it up a few notches.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:21 PM
id put it above all mentioned not counting the old ones that i havent seen
October 5th, 2010 at 4:21 PM
TBL has only seen the first 10 minutes of TDK, but he’s seen those first 10 minutes 100 times.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:21 PM
Which one?
October 5th, 2010 at 4:22 PM
Resevoir Dogs.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:22 PM
Inside Man was ok but I don’t think it lived up to it’s premise (much like Lee’s other movie Miracle at St. Anna(?)). I did watch it again the other night and enjoyed it a little more, but it’s still just a meh for me.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:22 PM
If we are talking Steve McQueen? Then yes.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:22 PM
Dead Presidents
October 5th, 2010 at 4:22 PM
The Killing > all other heist or whatever you want to fucking call it genre movies
October 5th, 2010 at 4:22 PM
So you’re saying there’s the possibility of one of these superseding The Town for your Best Picture nomination?
October 5th, 2010 at 4:23 PM
I WANNA GO WITCHU!!!
October 5th, 2010 at 4:23 PM
He’s an exceptional thief and since he is moving on to kidnapping try to be more polite.

October 5th, 2010 at 4:23 PM
I’d certainly add Out of Sight to this list. Or Quick Change.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:23 PM
No one’s mentioned “The Thomas Crown Affair” in the heist movie discussion?
nor Entrapment
October 5th, 2010 at 4:23 PM
My #1 bank robbery film.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:23 PM
movies i’ve seen this year (in terms of enjoyment):
1. expendables
2. pirhana 3d
3. inception
4. predators
October 5th, 2010 at 4:23 PM
Inception and it’s not even close. The Town is a movie that has been made dozens of times — no one has made a movie like Inception. The cast\story in Inception blows The Town out of the water.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:23 PM
Well, Iron Man 2 did involve someone “stealing” technology.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:24 PM
I was trying to rally the troops for Quick Change, too, sanders. I love that movie
October 5th, 2010 at 4:24 PM
i had not even considered the Dark Knight a bank robbery movie … until i read that first link (HERE)
October 5th, 2010 at 4:24 PM

October 5th, 2010 at 4:26 PM
Haven’t seen the Town, gave Inception 3.5 out 4.
I have a simple mind and can say the movie that entertained me the most that I saw in the theater this year was Get Him to the Greek, followed by Toy Story 3. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will be the best movie I see this year and that’s without it even being released yet.
Put me in my nutshell.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:26 PM
I’ve only seen Inception and The Expendables this year. Everything else is old stuff on Netflix. Going to see Social Network tonight, only because I have free passes.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:26 PM
Great movie.
Quick Change is also excellent. So is Midnight Run.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:26 PM
I said LAN-O-LIN, not that aloe-vera bullshit! Get it right, mutha fucka!
October 5th, 2010 at 4:26 PM
The remake’s use of Nina Simone’s Sinnerman is one of the all-time great choices of music.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:26 PM
I didn’t particularly like Snatch, Gangster #1 or Layer Cake. I might not be a good source here. But I did like Lock, Stock & 2 long of a title
October 5th, 2010 at 4:26 PM
Oh, and Book of Eli is the WORST movie I saw this year. Simply dreadful.

October 5th, 2010 at 4:28 PM
Ha! I actually kind of liked Book of Eli but it wasn’t great
October 5th, 2010 at 4:28 PM
This enjoyment probably has 85% to do with Kelly Brook, yes?
@KingGrizz – Inception takes it for me this year. It’s seriously one of my all-time favorites.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:28 PM
Layer Cake has two great scenes. The epic beatdown in the restaurant and the On Her Majesty’s Secret Service homage ending. The Sienna Miller dancing in the club wasn’t bad, either.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:28 PM
Rene Russo was at the pinnacle of her hotness in Mr. Destiny.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:28 PM
Reservoir Dogs is pretty damn good too.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:28 PM
@sparty –
Easily the best scene in that movie.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:28 PM
Lock, Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels is great. Wasn’t nearly as good either time Guy Richie called it RocknRolla or Snatch.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:28 PM

October 5th, 2010 at 4:28 PM

I really wish they would make a movie based on the Fallout series of games.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:30 PM
The Score was pretty good. The Italian Job was……entertaining.

October 5th, 2010 at 4:31 PM
I think the movie’s just okay, but Kingsley is outstanding. I feel the same way about The Limey with Terence Stamp.

October 5th, 2010 at 4:31 PM
It’s horrible. You’d love it.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:32 PM
Funny thing is I didn’t want to be embarrassed by misseplling the title so I put that in there. It’s not the finest moment I’ve had but I’ve done worse. CRM – I feel exactly the same way about Guy Ritchie’s movies. It was even worse when he put in on island with Madonna
October 5th, 2010 at 4:32 PM
You people know movies around here but I can’t remember heraing anything about BLOW. Maybe my favorite.

Very much this. Jennifer Lopez in her only quality role.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:34 PM

October 5th, 2010 at 4:34 PM
I finally got around to watching Girl with the Dragon Tattoo last weekend. Highly enjoyable.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:35 PM
I don’t watch Gossip Girl and don’t really know much about Blake Lively, so I had no idea that was her in the movie, which in hindsight, probably greatly helped my impression of her performance.
I thought she was good, don’t know why people are complaining she was in the movie.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:35 PM
Dead President’s is awesome. There is one scene that gives me the willies that i will never forget, though.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:35 PM
Shutter Island came out last year though. I couldn’t get down with Mila Kunis as a badass in BoE.
I guess I can say I was entertained by Predators, too. Eric Foreman ruined that one just like Spiderman 3 though.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:35 PM
That was filmed right down the street from Duffy.

HA! I’m gonna read the Wikipedia plotline now. Then Google “Kelly Brook” after I leave work.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:37 PM
Last movie before Rene Russo fell over the plastic surgery edge
October 5th, 2010 at 4:37 PM
I’d like to get down with Mila Kunis. She is so smoking hot in Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:37 PM
The premise of Human Centipede is more disturbing than the actual movie, IMO. I had high hopes for that movie, but after the first half, the rest was just stupid as hell.
This is an interesting list of Most Disturbing Movies. Just got an email from Netflix that “Happiness” is on the way:

October 5th, 2010 at 4:37 PM
Dragon Tattoo was a great movie. One of the rare movies that didn’t stray far from the book.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:37 PM
I’m guessing that TBL is attmpting to land the job of Brook “Bolt Ons” Lively’s publicist. I haven’t read one thing positive, and few things negative about Lively in her role in The Town (other than here where it was 90% negative).
Loved virtually every heist movie mentioned above.
Not a chance The Town comes in at any higher than 25th percentile…
October 5th, 2010 at 4:38 PM
TJ
This is dern cool.
End TJ
October 5th, 2010 at 4:38 PM
Ocean’s 11? Quite the robbery…
October 5th, 2010 at 4:39 PM
I can understand not liking Shutter Island as it’s very divisive, but I can’t imagine thinking it’s the worst movie of the year, or even on the short list. You’ve got Clash of the Titans, Grown Ups, The Last Airbender, Valentine’s Day, Eat Pray Love, The Bounty Hunter, etc., etc.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:39 PM
Sienna Miller in Layer Cake was something else.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:39 PM
nothing wrong with grown ups
October 5th, 2010 at 4:39 PM
She is so smoking hot in Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
And in “Extract”. Which was an incredibly dissapointing movie.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:39 PM
Dog Day Afternoon anyone?
October 5th, 2010 at 4:39 PM
That’s just stupid. It wasn’t like she stole the show in her scenes, but she did some good work there.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:39 PM
ugh, that would be it.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:40 PM
Piranha 3D was one of the most disorienting and incredible movie-going experiences I’ve ever had. Highly recommended.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:40 PM
Brook “Bolt Ons” Lively’s
If this is some new mutation of Blake Lively and Kelly Brook sign me the fuck up.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:40 PM
oh nevermind was thinking role models
October 5th, 2010 at 4:40 PM
Dead President’s is awesome. There is one scene that gives me the willies that i will never forget, though.
I stopped watching after that scene. Haven’t watched it since.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:41 PM
Oh piss off, brah. I can get down with anything Mila Kunis.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:41 PM
When is the internet going to leak the sex scene between Kunis and Portman from that ballet movie?
October 5th, 2010 at 4:41 PM
Me too.
I think I can take Clash of the Titans off there simply for RELEASING THE KRAKEN! Mindless entertainment at least… the others were all garbage and I only saw 1 of them.
/the one I saw was shameful, I was dragged
October 5th, 2010 at 4:41 PM
Phew. Scared me for a sec. Role Models is awesome. My favorite comedy of the past few years.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:41 PM
Yeah I don’t quite get the Lively hate. She was in the movie for 10 minutes and looked pretty good. They dressed her appropriately, and she seemed like she’d blow someone in a bar bathroom. Solid work.
/Ebert
October 5th, 2010 at 4:42 PM
Ooh, I forgot about Happiness as “most disturbing.” Of course, it’s in a tie with every other Todd Solondz movie for that title
October 5th, 2010 at 4:42 PM
You put Heat behind The Town?!! Thatis truly funny!
/credibility lost
October 5th, 2010 at 4:42 PM
It wasn’t like she stole the show in her scenes,
good point, her sex scene was boring
October 5th, 2010 at 4:42 PM
Christ. End of work day fail. I even looked at it twice and couldn’t figure out what was wrong with it before it hit me.
/Lively still looks 33 not 23. Color me unimpressed.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:43 PM
TBL, I think this post might cause a few more emails.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:44 PM
I heard there was a scene of riding Ben Affleck and I’d like to see that good work. She needs to show off the gams already.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:44 PM
Agreed. Great movie. I thought it was best or second best movie I have seen this year. The Girl who Played with Fire was not nearly as good of a movie as Tattoo.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:44 PM
thats why her with affleck didnt seem strange at all
October 5th, 2010 at 4:45 PM
Man on Wire is not a heist movie but is similar to one in many respects.
It is a spectacular movie.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:46 PM
has anyone here seen that movie Martyrs? I’ve heard it’s awesome and that it’s going to be remade but have never had a chance to watch it
October 5th, 2010 at 4:46 PM
Dragon Tattoo was a great movie. One of the rare movies that didn’t stray far from the book.
You are right it was pretty consistent, though the few plot points that did differ annoyed me for some reason.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:46 PM
Alright, I’d like to hear everyone do their best Boston accent before any more hate is applied to Lively.
/waits for audio comments feature
October 5th, 2010 at 4:46 PM
/ the story has the elements of a heist anyway.

October 5th, 2010 at 4:48 PM
Oh man, you missed some good stuff.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:48 PM
Oh, and Money Train FTW!!!
October 5th, 2010 at 4:49 PM
I didn’t really care for her either way in the movie as she’s hardly in it. Maybe people are upset because she essentially played the same character as Amy Ryan in Gone Baby Gone but about 10 percent as well. That’s unfair, because Ryan is a phenomenally talented actress and Lively is a pair of bolt ons on a zeitgeisty show.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:50 PM
Agreed.
/Idiocracy was decent
October 5th, 2010 at 4:50 PM
God bless that Melissa Etheridge “Dance Without Sleeping” montage. J-Lo rides the black penis express and Woody Harrelson gets it ass beat. Everybody wins!

Went to a very local italian place in East Boston for lunch. Thick Italian accents crossed with Boston mush-mouth-downs-syndrome-accent, I couldnt understand a word. Poor English, she never stood a chance.

October 6th, 2010 at 1:47 PM
Man I always forget how awful TBL’s taste in movies is until he puts up one of these posts.
The Town better than Dog Day Afternoon? IT HAD JOHN CAVALE IN IT. Please.
