Former UNC Assistant Coach John Blake on Agent’s Payroll
Lack of Institutional Control: Yahoo! Sports has a report detailing the financial transactions between agent Gary Wichard, former UNC assistant coach John Blake and suspended DT Marvin Austin. Essentially, Austin took trips provided by Wichard’s management company and has been ineligible since 2008. Blake was on Wichard’s payroll and had a company credit card. The two could face felony charges in North Carolina. UNC should vacate last season and face a slam dunk case for “lack of institutional control.” This couples with the academic scandal still under investigation. Butch Davis has to be out soon, right? If you cant trust Butch Davis, who can you trust?

BD is gone, but you’ll have to find a news source outside of NC to learn anything about this mess.

Biggest story of the day. Should’ve swapped times with this and the jersey post.
September 30th, 2010 at 5:38 PM
Only if it affects the basketball team (I assume it doesn’t). No one gives a rats ass about NC football.

Coop it’s still a huge story. Last night it dominated the Twitter feeds of Mandel, Forde, Wetzel, and Andy Staples.

Throwing the “lack of institutional control” label on a program is usually the kiss of death. The biggest penalties the NCAA has handed out in the last 25 years have all been because of lack of institutional control.

ms wants so badly for someone else to get the death penalty
September 30th, 2010 at 5:46 PM
Lefty – It’s a big story but we pretty much all saw this coming what with their missteps in the beginning of the season. We saw the tip of the iceberg then, now we’ve got the base of it.
This would sink a battleship, too. Davis forgot to attend those Calipari night school classes.

It’s true. I really do.
September 30th, 2010 at 5:47 PM
When is this going to spill over to the basketball team? It has to right?

I bet Duffy is a big Aaron Sorkin fan.

Yeah “detailed financial report” is synonymous with “no information at all.”

If old comments were still in the archive, you could go back to one of the first ‘Reggie Bush might have gotten money at USC’ posts and see me saying almost exactly this.

This won’t result in the death penalty because it’s not the third or fourth time. They’ll get smacked pretty good though.
SC – Did you read the Yahoo article? So much wrong all over the place. They claimed Austin was in California for 35 days during spring semester. Blake’s getting wire transfers from an agent. This is by far the most blatant disregard for rules and regs since SMU. And nobody’s ever caught a coach on an agent’s payroll before. Whether you saw UNC getting in trouble or not, you didn’t see any of that coming.

ms the difference here is that the folks investigating at the state level were complicit in the cover up at SMU.
September 30th, 2010 at 6:00 PM
was smu a lot worse than this unc thing?

Lefty, believe me, I know the story inside and out. We were cheatin’ and bad. What’s crazy is Bill Clements still managed to get elected Governor of Texas again after this broke.
We fully deserved the death penalty. My only problem is the NCAA’s inability to even consider it’s use again. Alabama barely avoided it in 2002 and even at that time the NCAA was doing everything it could to not invoke Article 19. It’s the uneven application of justice that pisses me off.

This really isn’t a phrase that should be tossed around without basis. Care to elaborate?

There’s a book about it here that’s been in print for awhile: http://www.amazon.com/Payroll-Meet-Story-Corruption-Football/dp/0026271915
There’s also an ESPN 30 for 30 about it coming up in November. It’s called “Pony Excess”.

Morneau, rub some dirt on it you fucking pussy.
September 30th, 2010 at 6:05 PM
This will get the “culture of non-compliance” tag, rather than “lack of institutional control”, IMO.
September 30th, 2010 at 6:06 PM
Actually, now that I re-read it, the summary’s not even accurate. Peace out.

Contemplating the differences between those two things amuses me to no end.

Freshman year, my roommate and I were at the Walmart on 15-501 rounding out our dormroom stuff before classes started. In the furniture aisle, we ran into Lang and the nastiest, ugliest looking chick I’d ever seen. She was like the black female version of Kris Lang…a match made in heaven.

Grats TG on getting your guy. That’s all I have to say about that.

tough day all around, right? I suggest a long bath, some chamomile tea, and rewatching the ’09 championship DVD while repeating “2010 didn’t happen” over and over again.
September 30th, 2010 at 6:09 PM
Easiest way to remember them is their real life applications: institutional control, SMU. Non-compliance, USC.

All good, TG. It’s been a rough one, not gonna lie. Researching “Lack of Institutional Control” when it pertains to your team is never a good way to start the day.

From what I’ve read about UNC so far, oh yes. I’m not trying to play the old guy card, but there was a time when SMU was referred to a Methodist Notre Dame in the making. You know, minus the history and all. I didn’t know there would be a 30/30 on that. Should be awesome.
