Should the Packers Have Let the Bears Score?
Green Bay and Chicago were tied at 17-17 near the end of the game. After the Packers were called for a pass interference penalty at the 9-yard line, Chicago got a 1st and goal with 1:44, the clock stopped because of the penalty, and Green Bay had only one timeout left. Should they have let the Bears score a touchdown so they could get the ball back with a timeout remaining?
I’m inclined to say yes, so long as they chose to do it on first down before burning the final timeout, and leaving themselves 1:30 left to score a touchdown. It depends on whether you think the Packers’ chance of scoring a touchdown were greater than the chance of a miss by Gould. Yesterday, in the Garrett Hartley post, I pointed out that kicks of 20-29 yards were successful 97% of the time. Do we think Green Bay had better than a 3% chance of scoring a touchdown with 1:30 left and a timeout? I think most would say “yes.”
My guess is that Green Bay would have had around a 10% chance of winning by scoring a TD and going to overtime. But once it got inside a minute and Green Bay had already used the timeout, I think they had to try to stop Chicago and hope for the best. First down, after the penalty, was the down to make that move.
After writing this, I also ran over to Advanced NFL Stats, and Brian Burke says the play was to allow the Bears to score also. His number is 20% that the Packers score a TD (based on timeout and time remaining), and then of course, they would also have to win in overtime. It appears the play was to allow the score to give the offense time to respond with a timeout remaining.

Absolutely. Was amazed they didn’t. More to the point… should the Bears have taken 3 straight knees after the PI?
Yes. Yes, they should have. And on that 3rd down play, have Cutler take a few steps back before kneeling to take more time off the clock.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:02 PM
yes.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:02 PM
Nice challenge McCarthy
I said they should have let the Bears score at the time, Mike Holmgren caught some shit for doing this in Super Bowl XXXII but like the post says, the odds of a team not scoring from that close in a tie game is minimal

As soon as this was brought up on ____ & ______ this morning, I knew you would have a post on this.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:02 PM
With a 100% chance Lovie goes into prevent D on the next drive, and you have Aaron Rodgers, yes.

September 28th, 2010 at 1:03 PM
Yes. No question.
I think most people (except McCarthy) were saying this in real time. We don’t even need hindsight 20/20 to criticize this decision.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:04 PM
nipple & velcro?
September 28th, 2010 at 1:04 PM
No way do you allow them to score. Too many things can go wrong and with the D knowing they are passing on every down and the Packers O line being so bad.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:04 PM
Also pretty likely.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:05 PM
Yes. Of course. It’s Aaron Rodgers vs. a Tampa 2 D. 80 yards in 90 seconds is nothing, especially when Tim Jennings is on the field.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:05 PM
I agree with this too Jersey. If they score on that first play, they leave like 90 seconds and a time out.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:05 PM
I don’t think you can run a prevent out of a 4-3 formation.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:06 PM
Less than 3% of the time
This was the case the entire game and the Packers didn’t have much trouble moving downfield to give themselves a shot
September 28th, 2010 at 1:06 PM
But did the lack of Dorsey Levens effect their thinking?
September 28th, 2010 at 1:06 PM
He and DJ Moore look about 25x better than Zack Bowman. So glad there’s some accountability on the Bears this year and guys like Bowman, Harris and Kevin Schafer get sat down if they don’t perform. Tice was all over Schafter before reinserting him into the game yesterday.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:06 PM
Not only should they have let them score, McCarthy should be scolded for using a challenge on that fumble by the sideline. It was clearly not out of bounds. Waste of a timeout there.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:06 PM
Perhaps this is giving too much credit. But the Bears had to have seen the Jets/Jags game last year where a similar situation occurred. Go down at the 1 and kick the FG, given the percentages from that close.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:08 PM
I think this is a lot like going for it on 4th and short in your own territory, coaches are just afraid of making a decision that isnt mainstream-ly made yet.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:08 PM
Lovie’s challenge of the Earl Bennett catch for a TD was dumb too. He’s horrible at challenges. So surprised he got the INT one right in the 1st quarter.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:09 PM
The real question to me is, at 3-0 are the Bears taking over from the Broncos for best starting team to miss the playoffs this season? Because the Broncos have already lost
September 28th, 2010 at 1:09 PM
Doesn’t McCarthy get input from the guys in his booth on whether or not to make a challenge? I’m pretty sure they showed the replay quickly on TV and it was clear there was nothing to challenge.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:09 PM
Bravo, good sir.
And I fell asleep in the second quarter, so I missed about everything. But from what I’ve read and heard (I’ll MMQB the fuck out of this), it sounds like the Pack would’ve been wise to allow the Bears to score.
I heard the stat today that Gould has NEVER missed inside 30.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:09 PM
Nice challenge McCarthy
Was there no one watching the replays to tell him not to waste a challenge on the fuble recovery? Man that was obvious as hell.

Chicago Bears? No way. Chicago Chipmunks, maybe…but not Bears.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:12 PM
He hasn’t. He’s also something like 1 for 9 from 50+. Guy is money from 20-45 yards. Think he’s the most accurate kicker in NFL history as it stands right now.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:12 PM
No way do you allow them to score. Too many things can go wrong and with the D knowing they are passing on every down and the Packers O line being so bad.So what? The final kick was closer than an extra point. I hate when coaches rely on the other team fucking up. It shows that they’re spineless and have no confidence in their own team to win the game. As Herm Edwards says, “You play to win the game.” You don’t play for the other team to lose.
Say what you will about Gregg Easterbrook (TMQ) but he’s totally on point with most of his coach criticisms.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:12 PM
it was one of those andy reid challenges. he just “had to” try something. Im happy kubiak hasnt done this yet. I think I would have an aneurysm
September 28th, 2010 at 1:12 PM
Who says the Bears wouldn’t have pulled a Westbrook and taken a knee on the 1 if the Packers went into the ‘ole’ defense?
September 28th, 2010 at 1:13 PM
He’s usually pretty decent at challenges but after making a terrible one last explained their process and how even though the guys upstairs were unsure he said the emotion of the moment got the best of him…consider my confidence in this team shaken
September 28th, 2010 at 1:13 PM
Lovie isn’t that smart. But that’s what I wanted them to do in #1.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:13 PM
Agreed. To me it just says that Lovie has no confidence in his team gaining less than a yard for a TD. Which, apparently, he actually shouldn’t have.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:13 PM
I’m working during the Climpson game but will have the DVR set. No surpirse they moved the F$U game to 8 pm, the Labor Day game last year did bonzo ratings. Also, word is Seantrel is practicing with the first team.

September 28th, 2010 at 1:14 PM
This isn’t even a question and I would know, I have played out this scenario probably 50 times in Madden in the past 20 years. The bottom line is with the ball back, a great offense, 1 timeout and 1:30 you have a chance. Letting them kick the FG with :08 left you have no chance.Furthermore the packers should have “accidentally” jumped off sides with the clock stopped on 1st and goal just to make it even easier for the bears to score.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:15 PM
Good post, Lisk.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:15 PM
I remain convinced he got that first down but I understand why the ref let the bobble psyche him out of it and there was no way replay was going to overturn it. Losing Faulk for the year sucks big time.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:15 PM
yes, I was yelling to let them score.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:16 PM
we are dealing with two dumbass coaches
Jack Del Rio managed it last year.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:16 PM
It really is amazing that coaches can’t figure out normal scenarios that are made abundantly obvious by playing Madden.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:16 PM
He apparently goes by Sean now, but that’s awesome. He looks like the second coming of Bryant McKinnie (apologies to Vikings fans but he was unbelievably good in his time at The U)

September 28th, 2010 at 1:17 PM
Kevin Faulk’s demise has resulted in Danny Woodhead’s rise. AFC is fucked.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:18 PM
Yes, they should have let them score. I was yelling this at my TV like a mental patient last night. No way those shitty bears should have won that game last night
September 28th, 2010 at 1:18 PM

September 28th, 2010 at 1:18 PM
I don’t think there was any way to tell based on the replay footage they had available. That Wayne catch to win it was sick, though. Only caught the back half of the ball.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:18 PM
Fuckin fuck, Cutler was bailed out all night long.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:18 PM

September 28th, 2010 at 1:19 PM
I’m looking forward to the Woodhead era. I hate it when “underdog” players I like end up on teams I hate. If Woodhead’s actually productive for New England I will tire of the “scrappy” shit within the first quarter
September 28th, 2010 at 1:19 PM
So video games are exactly like real life?
September 28th, 2010 at 1:19 PM
Fuck that guy. He made one long kick in the snow against Denver, that’s it. The rest of the time he was missing key kicks left and right. Against the Dolphins in the playoffs, against the Pats when homefield was on the line, and against the Steelers.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:19 PM
I would love to see some team adopt this strategy. at the snap of the ball the entire defense just sits down on the ground and let’s the offense run right into the endzone.
are you fucking fishing for a +1, hernia?

September 28th, 2010 at 1:19 PM
I think there should be an “idiot” somewhere in that quote.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:20 PM
If you can look at this and tell me he didn’t get it, then fine. But when he regains control of the ball the only part of his body not over the 30 is his left leg.
If they didn’t have that angle available then the NFL fails at replay. Like I said I knew the ref would not have the stones to go under the hood and reverse it.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:20 PM
I think we were looking for “liquored up” kicker.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:21 PM

September 28th, 2010 at 1:23 PM
Florida did this against Miami in the 70s so they could get the ball back and set some stupid offensive record, the game was well in hand.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:23 PM
So what was the exact quote from 18 about Vanderjat? Can’t find it. Either way, 18 must have been livid to be so candid.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:23 PM
I don’t think he regained control in front of the marker. I thought it then, and I think it now after looking at that. Ah, well. Agree to disagree.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:23 PM
So that puts the boob decision count at 4 for Lovie yesterday. Not taking a knee here, challenging the Bennett play, going for it on 4th down, and not switching to GEICO. There’s a let down loss coming either this week or next depending on Cutler’s decision making.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:24 PM
“our idiot kicker who got liquored up and ran his mouth off”
September 28th, 2010 at 1:24 PM
It was during the Pro Bowl, I believe he said, “I’m out here getting ready to throw a touchdown pass to Jerry Rice and we’re talking about our idiot kicker who got liquored up and ran his mouth.”
September 28th, 2010 at 1:24 PM
I am in the minority here, but the team that manages to put up 17 points in 58 minutes is going to be able to go and score 7 in 1? The Packers couldn’t adjust their chinstraps without drawing a penalty, but yet they could have let the Bears score, then drive roughly 80 yds in 1 minute and win? I just don’t buy it. I see all your points, but as dumb as Mccarthy is, Lovie is even dumber.

September 28th, 2010 at 1:26 PM
The strategies you can derive from Madden I think are actually valuable. I don’t see how anyone could argue that the Packers shouldn’t of let the Bears score in last night’s situation. And, if you’ve ever played Madden, you’d know this was really your only play if you wanted to win the game.
Another one I like is when the team is down by 9, 10, or 11 with less than a minute left and no timeouts. They then kick the FG once getting into FG range so they can onsides kick and if they recover, have a couple Hail Marys. You never see this in an NFL game.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:26 PM
cleet…do you have a problem with correct officiating? it seems like you do.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:26 PM
I agree with cleet!
/duh
/the bobble was at the 30.5 line, when he secured the ball, like cleet said, the only body part short of the first down marker was the left leg.

September 28th, 2010 at 1:27 PM
you don’t see that because it’s stupid.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:27 PM
Why don’t you give the side judge, whose line of sight to the ball was blocked by Faulk’s body an officiating award, that’ll justify it.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:28 PM
I’m convinced that all the NFC North coaches are idiots. Scwartz has yet to fully prove it, but he has made some really dumb in game decisions.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:28 PM
I am in the minority here, but the team that manages to put up 17 points in 58 minutes is going to be able to go and score 7 in 1?
Having the opportunity to try is better than not, no?
September 28th, 2010 at 1:29 PM
yeah, 1 minute is a lot worse than 8 seconds. theres only going to be one music city miracle. im sure teams practice that scenario to prevent it.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:29 PM
Good Christ, do we really have to haggle over 10-month old calls? That game didn’t mean anything in the grand scheme of things, anyhow.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:29 PM
PKI, I had the same thought but the reasoning isn’t that it puts them in a good position to win, just that it gives them their best chance to win.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:29 PM
Wait. Cavallari is going to be in NY this weekend. Load on the Bears +3!Load on her forehead, too.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:30 PM
I’m a fan of hers. That hatcher wound must be the key to Cutler’s success so far. That fat, lucky, liquored up piece of trash.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:30 PM
Naw, navel is a way shorter trip.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:30 PM
I will take my chances that my top 5 QB can try to take my team down the field for a tying score instead of sitting there holding my miniscule balls while the Bears run the clock down to 8 seconds to wait to kick a FG that’s shorter than a PAT and has a 97% chance of going in.
I would want to try to win. I would not rely on the other team failing.

Should the Packers Have Let the Bears Score?
It depends. Are you sure the bears are gay? Do the packers mind being bottom? Also, do the packers know that the bears are trying to score? So many questions!
September 28th, 2010 at 1:34 PM
We don’t have to, I said my piece and presented my evidence, just like the Tempe.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:34 PM
Disagree. It’s very situational, but I think that it’s sometimes the right play. I can’t remember how many times I’ve seen coaches go in vain for the TD with no timeouts and like 20 seconds left from around the 20 or 30 yard line. They rarely get the TD.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:34 PM

The odds were against them scoring, no doubt. But even if we are going to limit it to this game, the Packers scored a TD on 2 of 9 drives, and got to the CHI 20 on two others and attempted FG’s. The time is a limiting factor (though the timeout gives them sufficient time to throw to the middle of the field for a big play), but it’s somewhat offset by the fact the Packers are going to go for it aggressively on fourth down if needed. On 4 of the 9 drives in this game where you say the Pack couldn’t score, they got to the red zone. No one’s saying they were a favorite to win, just that a 10% chance is preferable to a 2% chance.
September 28th, 2010 at 1:35 PM
Good point. That is the worst collection of coaches in division by far, but I would put the NFC North in second place.

but the bears didnt. how did they know the packers werent going to let them walk in? they didnt even attempt a kneel down on the first play
September 28th, 2010 at 1:41 PM
@Jason Lisk
Is there any research done that weighs the importance of timeouts, esp in the second half? I always see QBs waste TOs to prevent delay of game penalties in the second half that seem so stupid. For instance, Trent Edwards earlier this year took one on like a 3dr and 17 (what’s 5 more yards there, he doesn’t even look more than 9 yards downfield) and on Sunday Eli took a timeout on his one-yard line to avoid a delay of game.
It just seems to be a waste of a valuable asset.

September 28th, 2010 at 1:54 PM
William Krasker of Football Commentary had a very math heavy post a few years ago. I’m sure Burke has done some estimates on the value of a timeout in the two minute drill, but I don’t have a link off the top of my head.
My rule would be “Timeouts are to be used for clock preservation and intelligent, high leverage challenges”. Do not call timeout to adjust the defense, or avoid a too many men penalty or to prevent a delay of game. The only exception might be on a critical drive where you have a 3rd/4th and 1 and will go to a 3rd/4th and 6. The difference in conversion rates there might be enough, but not at 3rd and 10, or in Edwards’ case, 3rd and 25. That was absurd. He may have raised his odds of conversion from 0.001 to 0.002% with that timeout.

Jason Lisk – I’m going to need your physical address so I can send you a tray of the finest meats and cheeses. You’re really doing a find job of keeping this place football-y. If not for you, we’d already be getting hastily thrown together NBA team previews.
So let me know. Meats and Cheeses.

Can you look at the calls objectively really say the pass intereference calls weren’t legit?
September 28th, 2010 at 2:02 PM

all the calls were by the rule. The rule sucks, but you can’t change that just because it’s the 4th quarter. That 7 yard underthrow that got picked was grosser than gross when they flagged it.

Honestly, no. But can you look at the throws objectively and say they weren’t awful decisions?
September 28th, 2010 at 2:04 PM
What are you gonna do though? DB wasn’t looking back as soon as the TE stopped…god this game was awful but that’s Bears football for you and how they’ve won games most of this decade
September 28th, 2010 at 2:06 PM
Not even just the PI, but the helmet to helmet call on Zombo was the right call, but the throw was awful. Cutler throwing the ball off his back foot into double coverage. Guy thinks he can make every throw. He did his best at pissing that game away last night.

@Jason Lisk
Thanks. It’s one of those things that I find really grating because it seems so obvious. I would even take the delay of game penalty on 1st and 10s and even things like 2nd and 1s. I mean, 2nd and 6 is not that difficult of a conversion if the cost is an important timeout.
As a Niner fan, I have many examples of this pathetic game management, but in the opener against Seattle, they blew all their TOs to prevent delay of games in the first half. Then, they were inside the Seattle 1 and wanted to go for it on fourth and goal. Since they are terrible at game management, they didn’t have the play in on time and personnel group ready, and since they were out of timeouts, it cost them a potential TD. Needless to say, it changed the entire game.

Is this how you entice all your victims?
Actually, I need someone to feed me my grapes. I am sitting here right now eating literally eating grapes with my own hands. It is humiliating.

Couldn’t agree more. This strategy makes perfect sense and I use it all the time in Madden. Seriously there is a lot to be learned about clock management by playing Madden. Can you imagine the ROI the Eagles would get if they just bought Andy Reid a Playstation3 and a copy of Madden?
September 28th, 2010 at 2:38 PM
lol Irish.
September 28th, 2010 at 2:48 PM
It would be stunning. Maybe he should just ask one of his loser heroin-using kids to try it out and be his clock managing consultant.
