You’re gonna contract 1/3 of Major League Baseball teams? Ok. Good luck losing that battle against the most powerful union in sports. I won’t even address your revenue sharing ideas, but I will ask, what should be done with all of the revenue from digital media? You know, the money MLB makes from MLB.tv, the Extra Innings package, the MLB Network, all of that stuff. Where should that money go?

I’m not a lawyer, but this seems pretty common sense: To be the most powerful union in the world, you have to have something people give a shit about. Nobody gives a shit about baseball. Therefore, the Union can trump how powerful they are, but if ratings tank, fans quit attending and owners go belly-up, how powerful are you really? Baseball has yet to figure this out, but it’s gonna be really ugly when they do.

As for MLB TV, etc., I’m not an economist and don’t pretend to be one. But you don’t have to be to realize why baseball is failing. It’s the simple fact that the Yankees can spend 200 million because they can afford it, and the Rays can only spend X million. Fans get annoyed with what they perceive to be unfairly written rules. Why spend money to buy season tickets, become fans of David Price and Evan Longoria, only to know they’re gone in a few years because you can’t afford them.

It’s one thing to do things the way the NFL does it, where by and large players aren’t retained because the team doesn’t see the value. Fans can understand that, and place trust in the execs to make the proper decisions. Fans do not understand, nor really should they have to, the whole “we can’t afford it” situation, which occurs so much more in baseball than any other professional sport.

Well, there has to be a cutoff, or you’re moving every team. So, there is a point below which some teams would get moved, and above which teams would stay. Unless you’re randomly moving teams, which doesn’t make much sense at all.
