Quite a Week for the San Francisco 49ers
Embarrassing 31-6 loss in Seattle. Then, Alex Smith – who was intercepted twice – ripped the coaches. Then, communication problems were exposed. Yesterday, intense 49ers coach Mike Singletary gave this TV interview, in which he folded his arms, looked angry, and sounded perturbed.
“Don’t base a man’s entire career on a dad gum Yahoo commercial … I don’t even want to talk about the Yahoo deal, it really pisses me off,” Singletary said. He went on to say, “We will not try to stop Drew Brees. We will stop Drew Brees.” Remember, San Fran fans – a loss Monday night will drop the 49ers to 0-2, and in the last 19 years, only 13 percent of teams that started 0-2 have made the playoffs. The Giants owned Montana.
September 17th, 2010 at 10:18 AM
Singletary keeping his pants on has been a big improvement over his initial move to coaching
What a clown…good luck finding your “rat” in the locker room
September 17th, 2010 at 10:18 AM
only 13 percent of teams that started 0-2
87% of the other teams also didn’t play in the NFC west.

What a clown…good luck finding your “rat” in the locker room
I don’t know if you knew this, but he said he wasn’t going to waste time looking for the rat either. He said the “stink” will eventually come out.
September 17th, 2010 at 10:20 AM
Yeah, 8 wins, maybe 7 will win that division. 0-2 would be killer in the AFC East, in the NFC west your tied for 2nd place.
September 17th, 2010 at 10:20 AM
Singletary fatal mistake was hitching his wagon to Alex Smith. How that guy has had repeated chances only to crap the bed each time is mind bottling.
September 17th, 2010 at 10:22 AM
Mike Singletary is the worst coach in the NFC West.
September 17th, 2010 at 10:22 AM
Love that clip.
September 17th, 2010 at 10:22 AM
interesting game for Seattle this wknd. A win at Denver, plus SF loss = 2 games up on Niners w/ one win head-to-head.
Oh, and SF follows this with trips to KC, Atlanta. The first isn’t an easy place to win; ATL is supposed to be good.
September 17th, 2010 at 10:23 AM
That was a really dumb thing to say. Not exactly inspiring trust among your squad.
I had high hopes for Samurai Mike. Looks like those hopes may have been misplaced. Then again, only week 1. If they turn it around on Monday Night, that’d be a huge win.
September 17th, 2010 at 10:24 AM
I don’t believe it, this will consume him…he was also upset when news of his pantsless dance was made known to the media
September 17th, 2010 at 10:24 AM
It seems like once a year Smith has a big game and it seems like he has turned the corner, then he just proceeds to suck again. He is like a better version of Joey Harrington.
September 17th, 2010 at 10:26 AM
That Marshall hit on Montana in real-time is one of the nastiest hits I’ve ever seen. I’ll never forget seeing that with my dad, who thought Montana was dead.
Much easier said than done, just like it was for the Niners to win in Seattle. Denver and Seattle have two legit home field advantages.
September 17th, 2010 at 10:26 AM
When Ballz wakes up from his heroin induced slumber he is not going to like this post.

40 career starts. One 300 yard game.
I have a buddy that lives in SJ that is a huge Niners fan. He wants Smith drowned in McCovey Cove.

Not sure he had much of a choice, yeah? Their front office was sort of a mess in the off-season, changes at the top pretty close to draft day. Not sure they ever had the right guys in place to do anything constructive, including trading for McNabb.
September 17th, 2010 at 10:31 AM
I know you’re not saying the ‘Hawks are going to win, but I’ll just say I think the Broncos handle them pretty easily on Sunday.

you never watched either play, so how would you even know?
September 17th, 2010 at 10:33 AM
He refers to the linked Yahoo! article above as a commercial.
Somewhat ironic, Yahoo! paid Singletary thousands of dollars to speak at our National Sales Conference earlier this year.
September 17th, 2010 at 10:33 AM
I want to believe that someway, somehow Mike McCarthy knew he’d be coaching the Packers someday when his recommendation to 49ers management (he was their offensive coordinator at the time) was to take Smith

Rats do tend to leave sinking ships.
September 17th, 2010 at 10:35 AM
I actually think Singletary would make an excellent college coach which is probably where he’ll end up.
September 17th, 2010 at 10:35 AM
Dont worry – both Mike and Mike, and Peter King are picking against the Pats and for the Jets for the 2nd week in a row. Its a lock!
September 17th, 2010 at 10:35 AM
Singletary is a good coach. Aa a Niner fan, I am 100% in his corner. As for Alex Smith, I think his comments were correct, but the manner which he expressed them was not the best.
I think the real problem lies with our offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye. That conservative play calling BS was fine when our offense was just Gore, but open it up a little bit. You got VD, Crabtree, and Josh Morgan as potential weapons. The guy refuses to admit the other teams are stacking 8 in the box and still tries to pound away with Gore.
Dont even get me started on Crabtree….Singletary needs to scare him straight like he did Vernon.
September 17th, 2010 at 10:36 AM
When Ballz wakes up from his heroin induced slumber he is not going to like this post.
Probably not, but it’ll be TBLAD by that time and so no one will notice that he’s miffed about a post from 10 hours earlier.

September 17th, 2010 at 10:43 AM

September 17th, 2010 at 10:44 AM
How about taking over for Zook at Illinois?
It would be an unorthodox hire considering he has little, as far as I know, recruiting experience. But I think the main reason that coaches who flounder in the NFL do better in college is greater control over personnel.
Also, let’s not forget that the Colorado job is almost certainly going to open up.
September 17th, 2010 at 10:45 AM
Seriously, it’s supposed to be a reward for HS teams to play there in the playoffs, but it feels like anything but.

Agreed, but all of the programs who we can see might have openings later this year, are a huge mess. It’s the middling programs, the administrations who decide they are sick of 6-7 win seasons over and over again, that lead to surprise firings at the end of the season.
September 17th, 2010 at 10:47 AM
I actually think Singletary would make an excellent coach in a prison, which is probably where he’ll end up. With a loss against the
Saints, you just know he’s gonna OJ one of his players.
September 17th, 2010 at 10:48 AM
NFL-turned college coaches always seem to recruit well by default. They can use the “I know what it takes to get to the next level” game with the kids. Al Groh, Bill Callahan, Mike Sherman, Pete Carroll, etc. had little recruiting experience but were always able get guys in the door.

Colorado has no money and can’t afford to pay multiple Head Coaches. That’s the only reason.
September 17th, 2010 at 10:50 AM
Couldn’t find a better fit for that town. They need a funky coach to keep their interest because they’re a bunch of hippies and hipsters. The Mad Pirate will win there (8 wins a year every year) and he’ll be able to recruit California being in the Pac 10. It really is a perfect fit in my opinion. A lot of people agree with me, too.
September 17th, 2010 at 10:50 AM
No just ghey. Otis Anderson gobble cock.
September 17th, 2010 at 10:50 AM
With the exception of Groh, the others did have the advantage of pitching a ‘prestigious’ program. Plus Carroll had the Song Girls.

Good point. SMU’s best recruiter right now is the O-line coach, Adrian Klemm. He’s already picked up a 4 star and a few 3 star recruits for us for next year. I have to imagine he wears his three Patriots Super Bowl rings on one hand when he walks into a recruit’s home.

Kampman was impressive, seemed to rub off on the rest of the line which is much improved from last year. Joe Cullen is apparently a raving lunatic.

I actually think Ballz is Bill Plaschke.
Nah, Ballz is a better writer than Plaschke, that saccharine, self-serving fuck.
September 17th, 2010 at 10:59 AM
Did they re-up him, because I’m pretty sure they can let him walk after this year free of charge.
Funny you should ask. I think it’ll be closer than most NEB fans would be comfortable with. Going out West and playing at Washington is not easy, but I like Nebraska to win. 27-24.

None of the big games were expected to be close, though. Each line was 8+. Last week was more about the names on the jerseys playing than the people wearing the jerseys.
September 17th, 2010 at 11:05 AM
Don’t sleep on the Sun Devils, Steve Threet knows how to beat Wisconsin.
/Still, Wisco wins by at least 10 points
September 17th, 2010 at 11:08 AM
With it being in Mad Town, I just don’t see that craptastic offense doing much of anything against Wisconsin, as average as their defense is.
September 17th, 2010 at 11:08 AM
I don’t know. If Duke can completely sell out on the run and hope McElroy sucks get a couple of tunrovers and play smart on offense, I think they could keep it close for a half.
This is the biggest game played at Duke since when? Those kids are going to be jacked and maybe they catch Bama flat-footed.
September 17th, 2010 at 11:08 AM
Not sure if the 49ers win this week against the Saints but the game will be more competitive and hopefully we can get Crabtree running the correct plays. I was most dissapointed with the defense and not being able to run the ball.

The same Nick Foles that couldn’t do shit against Nebraska? I just don’t see how Arizona scores enough to beat Iowa.
September 17th, 2010 at 11:16 AM
I agree. I just find the matchup intriguing, moreso because it’s at Duke.
September 17th, 2010 at 11:16 AM
So you are using the same argument for both the Arizona and Arizona State games.

September 17th, 2010 at 11:18 AM
Hawkins is history, and I think Husker is right about his contract.
In any case, the moneyed alumni have been angling for more control, and I think there’s some sort of buyout slush fund being built. There’s no way they can win more than 5 or 6 games this year, as someone said above, and the CU power structure has a hilariously misguided sense of their own place in the College Football Universe. They think they are more USC than CSU.

Pretty much. I think the Iowa-AZ will be closer than the ASU-WISC game, though.
September 17th, 2010 at 11:26 AM
I like Arizona. They look better on both lines right now. This is a definite trap game for the Hawks.
Wisky looks like typical Wisky. They play down to competition. The team is a bit better this week with ASU. They’ll likely roll to a 17-20 point win, especially at home.
September 17th, 2010 at 11:27 AM
I like Arizona. They look better on both lines right now. This is a definite trap game for the Hawks.
What do you not like about Iowa’s D-line?

You think AZ’s defensive line is better than Iowa’s? That’s a bold statement.
September 17th, 2010 at 11:31 AM
Ty –
I was comparing Arizona’s lines from last year. Iowa’s lines, especially their D-line are better than Arizona’s. Definitely.
But, Iowa has the crap-tastic Ricky Stanzi at QB.

Here’s why SF will win against the Saints: because I’m a Niners fan who rarely bets on their games, but even I had to put big money on New Orleans this week when the spread opened at only -5. So of course that will blow-up in my face.
/ Unless the Niners lose a close one, then I’m just screwed both ways.
