Trading AJ Hawk’s mannish fiance/wife might get more in return

“Severe migraine gives English woman French accent”
reminds me of that cool stuff that happens when folks get hit with lightning, like curing bad eyesight, etc

“She is what politics produces when you turn it into a game show and the coverage of it over to a generation of high-technology racetrack touts. She is what you get when political journalism reduces politics to numbers on a scoreboard, divorcing it from the real-world consequences of what are increasingly seen as cute little eccentric decisions.”
Awesome.

almost not worth responding to…..there are many bloggers who would earn their spot better than the mopes from MSM

Just think…Calipari almost went to NC State before realizing that he couldn’t pull this kind of shit in the ACC. I know the State people aren’t happy with Sidney Lowe’s record, but things could’ve been worse.

What’s wrong with Virginia Tech?
I believe it’s called being perennially overrated.
September 16th, 2010 at 8:16 AM
I know someone will probably prove me horrifyingly wrong, but Eva Mendes looks rather nice everywhere
September 16th, 2010 at 8:17 AM
insofar as talking to the media is part of an athlete’s job, i’ve seen athletes pulled out into the corridor with their game clothes still on to talk to women reporters. there’s no need for women to go into the locker room before or after games, if the team wants to accommodate her by snagging who she wants to speak with and pulling them out of the locker room.
look, veteran sportswriters will tell you even as guys they never feel comfortabale in locker rooms–they are outsiders in a world full of barely-educated men who mostly see the media as an adversary, not to mention simply not part of their team.
and there are a lot of sportswriters who quite nicely fill the stereotype of fat, unathletic men who love the free food and kiss athlete ass. they don’t do the things that athletes are trained to respect

Hmm…hope the Saints hear this.
September 16th, 2010 at 8:34 AM
Other than a lack of imagination on offense and defense, nothing. Hopefully, there won’t be anymore features this year about how the coaching staff has been together for so long. There’s a reason for that.
September 16th, 2010 at 8:38 AM
That information is expected to be forwarded to the N.C.A.A., which will determine whether Calipari can pull off an unprecedented triple crown — having seasons vacated at three universities.
How anyone can continue to defend Calipari is mind-boggling.

Nope watched the Twins kick Sox butt and now are just a game out for the best record in the AL. Hard to believe.

September 16th, 2010 at 8:54 AM
More likely, the Top Chef finale
September 16th, 2010 at 8:55 AM
I keep hearing this on Twitter, but I think Jeter is being properly scorched for this anyway. All over ESPN radio all day I bet. Also there might be more venom if the Yanks had won.

How soon before we hear chants of “Derek Cheater” around AL parks?
September 16th, 2010 at 8:59 AM
This is a great idea until you realize those marquee players wouldn’t do jackshit if it wasn’t for the other ten players on their side of the field. Running backs need offensive lineman to block. Quarterbacks need offensive lineman to block. Linebackers need the defensive lineman to take on blocks. Every position relies on another to make a play. I don’t care who people “pay” for to come see the game or who excels in the game. You either pay them all, or you don’t pay any of them.
September 16th, 2010 at 9:00 AM
Yeah I hated Kenny and Ed. Guess Kenny was the lesser of 2 evils. Was pulling for Angelo or Kelly the whole way.
September 16th, 2010 at 9:00 AM
No sympathy…delegating the last course is always stupid, and letting what my sister called the worst top chef winner ever do it was even worse.
That dessert was something that I’d expect from a Ruby Tuesday’s…not a world class chef. Kevin won it with his final course.
September 16th, 2010 at 9:00 AM
How soon before we hear chants of “Derek Cheater” around AL parks?
shit, he’s #4,578 in line. ever hear of aj pierzynski? it’s gamesmanship
September 16th, 2010 at 9:00 AM
I say hard to believe because they limped into the All Star break with bad pitching and no offense and 4.5 games behind and in 3rd place.

Ah, I remember this point of the season fondly. Vegas put the Twins at +250 to win the AL Central. I’m about 2 and a half weeks from reaping the benefits of this.

Then again, it should be expected since the AL East >>> AL Central

share the revenue with the players, equally, among the entire NCAA. each gets a merch stipend every month they are actively enrolled in the school and a member of the team they are playing for.

There are always the crazies in each tribe. JJ was lucky the goat farmer just lost her mind and talked herself out of the tribe. The “other” Jimmy seemed like a nutjob too – I have a feeling that the old v young gimmick is going to last about another 2 weeks before Probst has the reset the tribes though.
September 16th, 2010 at 9:09 AM
Christine O’Donnell got over $500,000 just hours after her primary win. Doesn’t look like the money will dry up.

This was surprisingly interesting.
RE: Jeter and the HBP
At least he just owned up to it after the game. A-Rod would have said it hit him, not the bat. Part of the game and Cap’n Jeets took advantage. Not like it cost the Rays the game, either.

If Tea Party members get voted to Congress and win in eliminating taxes how are their salaries going to get paid? Or are they just out to eliminate income tax with the assumption that business will then flourish and sales tax revenue will roll in?
September 16th, 2010 at 9:13 AM
Hell no. They’re beating the old money in primaries. They don’t need them. The irony of the whole thing is delicious. The ‘pubs have been appealing to the lowest common denominator in their base by rallying against “wild eyed liberal zealots”, and not their party is on the verge of being taken over by wild eyed racists and fear mongers who mask their ignorance behind true conservativism and religon.

it could have. Granderson hit 2 run shot next at bat. replay now. MLB needs to get w/ the program. too worried about statues and shit for Mr Selig

Twins finish, what, 4th place if they play in the bEast? 5th place if Buck is managing the whole year?
September 16th, 2010 at 9:21 AM
I thought the exact same thing! Also, it makes me sad that video from 1994 looks so old now.

Not sure if you guys have seen the internet’s latest victory but it’s quite the spectacle.
September 16th, 2010 at 9:24 AM
Prolly this one. Except that they also want to reduce business taxes, so now I’m at a loss on how anything would get paid for.
September 16th, 2010 at 9:24 AM
i’m just always amazed at how the tea party people, and to extent, most conservative republicans really think that businesses and rich people will voluntarily start spending their money when they make it hand over fist when productivity is up and there is no need to increase wages to keep workers since there are so many out of work people who could fill that spot at a cheaper cost.
i don’t think there should be any tax laws that force companies and rich people to spend money, but there should be incentives for the hiring of American workers (and maybe penalties for outsourcing labor).
September 16th, 2010 at 9:25 AM
First thing I thought of this morning. The media will pain this as gamesmanship and a great play because it was Groundout Jeter that made the play.
ARod got destroyed everywhere for trying to knock the ball out of a guy’s glove, which I would also consider to be gamesmanship.
Also, substitute Manny Ramirez for Jeter in that situation. The calls for Manny to be suspended would have been everywhere.
It’s just a nice Jeter double standard for a bull shit play. Calling the trainer out was over the top garbage.
September 16th, 2010 at 9:25 AM
5th place if Buck is managing the whole year?
be concerned about this weekend, homie.
September 16th, 2010 at 9:26 AM
It’s an amazing thing called fiscal responsibility. I grew up in NH with no state sales or income tax, and we had schools and even paved roads.

September 16th, 2010 at 9:33 AM
It has more to do with the over the top reaction to everything A-Rod does (maybe not so much since last year) than there being a double standard for Jeter.
September 16th, 2010 at 9:33 AM
Just like work will expand to fill the time allotted, so will spending expand to fill the budget.
September 16th, 2010 at 9:34 AM
Everyone should have a look at the “bonds for bloggers” article, as it’s rich with delicious irony and hypocrisy. He stands on his soapbox for the duration of the article, then proceeds to introduce Inez Sainz as the reporter who showed up to Patriots practice during the Super Bowl in a wedding dress, and proposed to Tom Brady. Only problem is…that was Inez Gomez-Mont. Good thing he didn’t call on newspapers to float that $10,000 bond for its writers!
September 16th, 2010 at 9:34 AM
I want Katy Perry to tie me to a bedpost.
then her and russell would leave for a night out?

September 16th, 2010 at 9:36 AM
It’s an amazing thing called fiscal responsibility. I grew up in NH with no state sales or income tax, and we had schools and even paved roads.
What were the property taxes and business taxes like?
New Hampshire takes a ripe crap on its poor people every chance it gets. And when they get sick, they just move over an establish residency in either Mass or Vermont. Both of those states health plans get victimized, and New Hampshire stays sanctimonious about small gov’t.
Also, because New Hampshire has no sales tax on purchases, most of their money is made on the Mass and VT borders, with people driving over to save money, taking money away from those two states, and business possibilities away from VT border towns, for sure.
Oh, and cheap liquor. New hampshire is all about cheap liquor.
September 16th, 2010 at 9:36 AM
I wouldn’t be surprised by the Yanks missing the playoffs. The staff is in shambles and the Sawx are creepin’. It just seems like the Rays are destined to take it this year.

put the united states between two other countries, and let people siphon services from those other countries while not contributing to their tax rolls.
September 16th, 2010 at 9:40 AM
Just took a look, and they run mighty high. 30% in some places. Looks like the brunt is 15-25%. Plus tolls on roads.

I’m pretty sure the biggest of the big boys get steep breaks on those taxes. The right hand side of the Connecticut River is a littered with big box stores. Not like Austin TX, but just a huge number of the same stores.
September 16th, 2010 at 9:43 AM
You’re right, they should tax the hell out of everything until everybody is miserable.
I see no problem with this.
September 16th, 2010 at 9:43 AM
Patty Kane showed up with his mom and not some sort of attractive arm candy. I was surprised and kinda in a good way. Season around the corner and as Mickey told us in Rocky, women weaken legs.
Ovechkin looks he wandered in off the street asking for handouts. Put on a jacket, man.

do i need 1080p for sports on TV or is the 1080p for just blueray and video games? i know the 240/120hz is better for sports than the 60hz, but how much?
September 16th, 2010 at 9:47 AM
You’re right, they should tax the hell out of everything until everybody is miserable.
the positioning of the state allows them to be New England’s biggest shirker. Live Free or Die means no nickel deposit on aluminum cans, no seatbelt law for adults, and nearly no social services. Other states suffer from the lack of governance in NH. They don’t even provide health coverage for poor children.
September 16th, 2010 at 9:48 AM
@ Geezeus You’ll find this interesting, I think. Not sure if Garland is around, but he probably knows everything about this guy.
Pharm. Thanks, good article. It is interesting to read a little about how things work out East. Much different than Alberta, teams here (up until junior) are not owned in the same way.
September 16th, 2010 at 9:48 AM
Clay – looks like a few decent pieces of eye candy on the “young” team. One was a ‘Fins cheerleader, but first ep usually makes it pretty tough to judge.
Don’t think this needs a spoiler alert though – the women in the “old” tribe are pretty rough, so consider yourself warned
September 16th, 2010 at 9:49 AM
I don’t think that’s the point. You presented New Hampshire as this bastion of fiscal responsibility. Others have shown that there is a lot that goes into NH being able to present itself in that manner.
September 16th, 2010 at 9:49 AM
I found the printed PowerPoint slides, I can transcribe some of the key points. The source is McKinsey & Company.

Pfftt, tell those kids to get jobs already…they can work the concession stands at my Yosemite National Amusement Park (without government we can get rid of child labor and minimum wage laws, right?)
September 16th, 2010 at 9:50 AM
you see hollywood celebs all the time lookin like shit out on the town
Out on the town is wholly different than a marketing event for a league struggling to create a footprint in many US markets.
When I started we had to wear shirt/tie to every game/team event. Probably clouds my view.
September 16th, 2010 at 9:50 AM
SG – Quenneville got extended. Looks like he’ll be at Ditka’s at some point today with W&S.
September 16th, 2010 at 9:51 AM
Get a plasma, no worrying about the refresh rates. For 1080p, how big of a TV are you looking at?
September 16th, 2010 at 9:51 AM
Keep the string of hockey posts. Top 10 celebrations.
September 16th, 2010 at 9:51 AM
Blu ray is the only thing that’s true 1080p. TV broadcasts in 720p/1080i.
The slower the hz, the more action blur you’ll have. When the action moves, your screen will pixelate slightly. Almost like thousands of little boxes. So, if you’re a sports fan, then I recommend getting faster hz.

exactly. Let them get really dirty, and their clothes start to sag off of them. Last season was the greatest one ever, because they brought back so many girls who understood their role.
I hate the idea of an “old” team, but maybe JJ will be good. I feel bad that all the work he did to grow his penis was probably thrown away for this, but he’s a good bump for the show.
September 16th, 2010 at 9:52 AM
I don’t think that was my point, althought I have gotten sidetracked with Dirt since then.
I think it was Hawkeye who said that without sales or income tax, he doesn’t know how anything would get paid for. I just made the comment that I grew up in a state with that same scenerio, and made a comment that whatever you have in money, you’ll spend it, whether it be small or large.
September 16th, 2010 at 9:53 AM
Love to know who wrote that… Those that are pro-outsourcing (meaning they are in the business and make money from it) have put out some great stuff showing the increase in jobs in the US.
In actuality, I have yet to really see that come to fruition.
Companies are all looking at short term profits rather than long term growth. It has already become difficult for companies who have outsourced call centers overseas to maintain their workers and they are finding re-training and replacement workers to be a costly venture.
There are a large number of places in the midwest where call centers would work. Unemployment is high, turnover would be next to nothing because there is nothing else to do, and the pay scale would not be exorbitant. The only thing missing are the slight tax breaks necessary for companies to start that type of investment (which would make sense without the tax breaks, long term).
September 16th, 2010 at 9:53 AM
This advice is OK, if there’s no problem with glare or intense heat or a higher electric bill.
September 16th, 2010 at 9:54 AM
Vez – If he was out on the town, no issue. But clean up a little for an event like that. I’m not asking for an NBA-like dress code at games and whatnot, but it was a marketing event and he’s the most marketable guy in the league because of his charisma. Who gets outclassed by Kaner?
September 16th, 2010 at 9:54 AM
spence, always nice to be able to find common ground with you. I love Theodore Rex. And the letters the guy wrote to his sons about football being a manly sport are priceless.

If there’s any big 10 knuckleheads out there, I’m ready for the ” I told you so” about Sean Lee. What a pussy. He’s already hurt again, after not practicing all preseason.
September 16th, 2010 at 9:54 AM
zeus, if the league doesn;t demand better, then it’s the laegue’s fault, yes? not the athlete’s
As SC mentioned he is the only one (in the available pictures) not wearing a shirt/jacket combo. Can’t lay that at the feet of the league.
September 16th, 2010 at 9:54 AM
i still don’t see why it’s shameful.
September 16th, 2010 at 9:55 AM
You have no idea or opinion as to what fiscal responsibility on a national level should be or look like?
September 16th, 2010 at 9:55 AM
With TV’s less than 50″, the difference between 720 and 1080 is non-distinguishable too. It does make a difference with larger screens. Can save a ton if you are just looking for 42″…
September 16th, 2010 at 9:55 AM
Yeah SC I read about it on Twitter this morning.
September 16th, 2010 at 9:56 AM

September 16th, 2010 at 9:56 AM
So, should the tax breaks be extended across the board? Or to just the < $250K crowd?
Right now, I think, at least in the short-term, it should be across the board. You can't raise taxes on the $250K+ crowd. It's only 2.5%, but that's almost 900K small businesses, many of which would likely have to cut jobs to pay for the taxes that were once cut.
September 16th, 2010 at 9:56 AM
For wilhelm re: offshoring.
September 16th, 2010 at 9:57 AM
i still don’t see why it’s shameful.
Ok, maybe shameful wasn’t the right word. How about unprofessional. It was a wine and dine with the league’s television partners, and everyone knows the NHL needs them more than they need the NHL.

call centers even in those parts of the midwest would be more expensive than opening one in India. Hell, the midwest is where a number of those positions were outsourced from.
September 16th, 2010 at 9:57 AM
let me pose this from a different angle…if ovie wore a suit, would you have been discussing this at all?
boom…tshirt = pageviews…er…something.

You are correct, they have no sales or personal income tax, but they make up for in on property taxes, toll roads and investment income taxes.

The commercial for NBA2k11 is awesome. I haven’t bought a basketball game since college, but with the Jordan features in this, I’d consider it. I’ll have to consult my lawyers and see if this is in breach of my NBA boycott though.

What I’m quoting comes from McKinsey & Company, which certainly is a consulting firm that makes huge amounts of $$ saying these things, but it’s printed in the Harvard Business Press, and is reviewed by academic scholars. It’s not being printed for another company’s benefit.
September 16th, 2010 at 10:00 AM
Does this study address a comparison in average salary between the new jobs being created and the ones being outsourced?

If it’s fully enclosed, the heat could be a problem. Since it’s replacing a projection, I doubt that’ll be an issue. I’ve never had a problem with glare with mine and I have direct sunlight in the afternoons (blocked by shades). Power…well yeah.
September 16th, 2010 at 10:01 AM

And I currently live in NJ, which has all of those things, at higher levels, plus sales tax and income taxes. CT and NY are the same way. NY has state, county, and city taxes.
September 16th, 2010 at 10:03 AM
Thanks for the TV advice.
i’m looking at a 46″ from either Samsung, LG, or Panasonic. so other than the higher electric bill and glare, there’s no big difference between plasma and LCD? How much better is the LED/LCD?
September 16th, 2010 at 10:04 AM
Short term, yes. Long term, not so sure. A lot of the problem with some of the midwest call centers was the overhead got too big. Companies didn’t work on trimming the fat, they got rid of everyone.
Now that companies have been overseas for a longer term, the cheaper cost has risen a great deal. First, more companies are there, so there is a larger demand for workers which drives up salary. There is more training necessary because there is a larger turnover rate, which increases the overhead.
From a short term perspective, it is definitely more cost conscious. However, that is the country’s biggest problem right now. Everything is about the “right now” and not about the long term. The executives get bonused on short term profitability, individual investors are looking for the short term profit, etc…
Companies that begin to look at the long term, with one eye on their short term successes, will be better off in the long run. I think some of that long term needs to be investment in the United States. But, to do so, companies need a push, which tax breaks would allow.
September 16th, 2010 at 10:04 AM
absolutely you can, if you don’t want a repeat, tell them don;t come w/o jacket
It is an unwritten rule, he wears a suit when arriving at the rink for every game. why would it be any different for a corporate schmoozing event? Look through the pictures in the link, no one else needed a league mandated policy to know not to wear jeans and a t-shirt.
September 16th, 2010 at 10:05 AM
ill – stay away from Panasonic. Bar I used to work at had them and we had nothing but trouble with them. I also bought a Panasonic sound system before getting my Onkyo one and the Panasonic was terrible.
I have a Samsung TV (LCD 42″) and love it. Heard great things about LG, too. Sony is top of the line, IMO.
September 16th, 2010 at 10:05 AM
I’m just not a big plasma fan, Hawkeye. LCD is for me. I guess it’s all about your lifestyle.

September 16th, 2010 at 10:05 AM
Outsourcing was hot in IT like 5 years ago (at one point I was replaced by a room of indians, I quit). Its been massively scaled back as the potential savings never materialized because the extremely poor work and the subsequent need to hire lost of middle management jackoffs to herd the rooms of oversea morons. Turns out its simpler and more effective to pay good people good money.
And the H1B’s that big companies want more of are the 21st century version of indentured servitude that suppresses wages by enslaving the foreign worker.
September 16th, 2010 at 10:06 AM
but that money spent on US employees is paid back directly in to our economy. you can’t tell me a worker in india making $3.50 an hour and spending their salary in India is better than a US worker making $9.50 an hour spending their wages in the US.
September 16th, 2010 at 10:07 AM
Heard great things about LG, too. Sony is top of the line, IMO
I have a 42″ LG plasma (couple years old now), I would recommend it to anyone.
September 16th, 2010 at 10:07 AM
Contrast is going to be higher on plasmas. To compare the refresh rates of plasms to LCD-LED, you’ll have to look at the highest refresh rate one (240hz, I think)
September 16th, 2010 at 10:08 AM
No problem. I’ve got a 37″ LG LCD and never had a problem. Both TVs have come a long way and are about even in most categories. What plasma loses in electric bill, heat and glare, it gains in colors. They’re more natural, if that makes sense. LCDs are brighter, more vivid. LEDs: I confess I don’t know a lot about them.
September 16th, 2010 at 10:09 AM
Like anything in business, companies never tread slowly. It’s always headfirst, if a little is good, then more is better. Which is a big reason the stock market is constantly overvalued, then undervalued, then overvalued again and again.
September 16th, 2010 at 10:09 AM
That’s what alot boils down to now. When I bought the plasma, the 120hz were just coming out, and a 42″ cost about $1800. The plasma cost me $1000. Easy choice.
September 16th, 2010 at 10:10 AM
i’ve got a 40″ Samsung LED (first gen) 1080p, 240hz, love it. HD, especially Blu-Ray looks amazing. the screen handles depth perception very well. It’s definitely not 3D, but it looks more natural.
September 16th, 2010 at 10:11 AM
But if the US company is able to take that $6/hour difference, plus overhead costs, and hire someone in the US at $10/hour for a different job, doesn’t everybody win?
September 16th, 2010 at 10:11 AM
Give this man a cigar, ladies and gents…
St. Bear –
Interested to know when that McKinsey study came out. From the 2 paragraphs, it is tough to tell, but it sounds like the assumption was that people would be retiring at ages that they have been retiring at in the past. With the market collapse and retirement funds going up in smoke, I would argue that the 55-65 generation isn’t going to retire nearly as soon as they did 10-15 years ago.
September 16th, 2010 at 10:12 AM
after the basics, that worker making 9.50 an hour has nothing to spend.
September 16th, 2010 at 10:12 AM
Sent that link to TBL. I know he’s not big on hockey but it speaks to the larger story of crazy sports parents.
I’ve met the guy in question once or twice around the arenas. He immediatley sets off the alarm bells as someone who is constantly working an angle. He’s definitely got a passion for the game but he seems misguided in a lot of the stuff he does. It’s also a commonly held belief that he was doing some creative accounting when he owned all those teams (not confirmed by me).
September 16th, 2010 at 10:13 AM
cont… because while the salaries have decreased, the cost of living has increased.
September 16th, 2010 at 10:15 AM
@ill – This might sound silly, but go to Best Buy (they’re non-commission) and have them set up a demo for you. Tell them the size you’re going for, what you like to watch, what you’ll use it for (video games? Blu ray? Regular DVD? etc.) Get the plasma, LCD, LED either side-by-side-by-side with the same video feed, or walk back-and-forth between them. You’ll be able to see how each looks with the same feed and you can decide that way.
September 16th, 2010 at 10:16 AM
thanks again.
i’ve found a 46′ LG 1080/240hz for $800 at Costco. sounds like you guys are saying LG is reliable, so maybe i jump on that.
i’d just rather spend less on a 720p if nothing even broadcasts in 1080p cause i don’t own a blueray player. basically, i just want to watch sports and have the clarity to make better instant reply rulings than the game official.
September 16th, 2010 at 10:16 AM

If I can remember exactly which book, I’ll shoot you an e-mail.

Garland, is it pretty common for a private investor to own a minor hockey team out in the GTA?
September 16th, 2010 at 10:17 AM
not really because tehre is still a massive amount of money leaving the country to pay someone else. Sure, there are overhead costs, but even those costs are mostly kept within this country.
@wally’s world: you make a very good point about retirement age. when you factor in people won’t have social security to fall back on more and more will be working longer the investment on workers will have a longer payout.
September 16th, 2010 at 10:19 AM
GYD…i haven’t read theodore rex. i’ll check it out at the library tonite tho. thanks for the recommendation.
September 16th, 2010 at 10:20 AM
depends on the area they live in. In NJ they won’t be able to live alone, probably need at least 10K more per year for that. $9.50 was just an estimate anyway, not a fact that’s what would be paid to that employee.
September 16th, 2010 at 10:23 AM
There are a lot of privately run organizations but also many community based ones. It’s an interesting set up as all orgs have to technically be not-for-profit. Basically, as I understand it, you can show an operating profit but organization officials/administrators can take a salary. Full disclosure of any salaries taken is required to the league and the parents footing the bill.
My son plays for a community based team and I do some administrative stuff for the organization. I was offered a decent amount of money to take on an administrative role with another org this summer. One of the catches was that they wanted my son to move and play for them as well. It can get very sketchy. I’ve always stuck with the community based orgs that are run by volunteers.
September 16th, 2010 at 10:24 AM
*CAN’T show an operational profit
September 16th, 2010 at 10:25 AM
Does anyone go with Mitsubishi DLP TV’s? You can get 65″-inch TV’s for $999 if you look in the right place. Just wondering if anyone sacrifices the perfect picture quality for size (they also make 73″ and I think 85″ inch screens).
September 16th, 2010 at 10:28 AM
I understand it was an estimate, but the premise remains the same: the salary for that type of position isn’t going to match the cost of living. Of course on the other hand, if you take on the Warren Buffet style with GEICO and move your call centers tot he outskirts of major metro areas, that can bring the gap a little closer, but for a far fewer number of people.
September 16th, 2010 at 10:29 AM
i’ve honestly not seen a DLP rear projection TV in a few years. I thought about it when i was looking for a new TV last year but couldn’t find any.
the picture quality is still pretty good (at least on the last few DLP’s i looked at *used to sell TVs at Circuit City*), just need optimum viewing situations. Darker room, the right viewing distance, not too far from the side or too low or high.
September 16th, 2010 at 10:30 AM
Garland,
Thanks for the breakdown. Things are quite different out here, all of the clubs at the minor hockey level are run by volunteers in the specific communities subject to similar not-for-profit rules.
Summer hockey teams are another matter altogether and some of those are very sketchy. We are also seeing an increase in private schools dedicated to athletics where a kid can play hockey or other sports every day (whole other issue and something I don’t agree with).
September 16th, 2010 at 10:31 AM
Doesn’t DLP also have a high repair rate due to the bulbs and color/mirror wheel?
September 16th, 2010 at 10:32 AM
which is probably what would happen anyway, the suburban areas in the cheaper cities would have this kind of business, i don’t see call centers popping up in the NY metro area, but int he mid west, or even ohio, rural PA, hell even Detroit could use that kind of business.
September 16th, 2010 at 10:34 AM
most bulbs are good for 3 years, unless your watching your TV for 8+ hours per day, every day. the bulb is the most common failure point, i haven’t heard much about the mirror, however.
it’s definitely a solution if you want bigger for cheaper, don’t want to wall mount and don’t care about the thinness of the set.
September 16th, 2010 at 10:34 AM
Geeezeus – We have that school issue creeping in as well. See here. There’s a few more like that one popping up each year. I’ve heard that the educational component is quite good at the school I linked by still think it’s a bad idea.
Hockey schools and the elite summer hockey programs that many of them run are a huge cash grab. I’m sure you know all about “The Brick” tourney in your neck of the wooods and that’s the holy grail for these summer programs and their super teams. It’s crazy.
September 16th, 2010 at 10:36 AM
Hell yes. There are counties in Northern Ohio, that were mainly manufacturing counties, that are upwards of 22% unemployment. Most are educated enough to handle call center tasks, especially those that are repetitive in nature. They speak midwestern English, which is a big plus with customers. The people are work-driven, but there’s nothing for them to do after the companies shipped out all of the work.
These are the type of places that can thrive long term for a company looking for cheaper help doing menial tasks.
September 16th, 2010 at 10:39 AM
Garland,
I’ve heard the same thing about the educational aspect. In fact many of the teachers at the schools here are guys I played with at the U of A or alumni of the program.
The Brick tournament is a massive cash grab. If my kid decides he wants to play hockey the deal is going to be the same as what I had growing up (until bantam). If you want to play hockey in the winter you have to do something else in the summer (I swam and played ball).
September 16th, 2010 at 10:46 AM
We’re coming from the same place. My son is nowhere near elite in terms of hockey so I’m not really susceptible to the the sales pitches these guys make but I’ve seen people sucked in. We’re talking second mortgages just to bankroll “The Dream”.
My son plays 3-on-3 or 4-on-4 hockey in the summer. One game a week, no practices and it’s basically an excuse to play with his friends from school. We mix it up with soccer, flag football and jiu jitsu. He’s fit, happy and has a bunch of friends. That should really be the point.
September 16th, 2010 at 10:47 AM
We have one at the school I teach at that gets used between 6-7 hours a day for 9 months and even then the bulb didn’t have to be replaced for three years. We had to look into the bigger sizes because there are 20-25 students in a room so naturally the bigger the better.
Wasn’t sure about home use or if anyone had one…but the description of them now says they are also 3-D ready.
September 16th, 2010 at 10:48 AM
He’s fit, happy and has a bunch of friends. That should really be the point.
This. Big time.

A Jersey/Held Over administration will address these problems.

woman beats boyfriend after finding strip club receipt in his wallet
Two questions:
1. Who still keeps ATM receipts (I’m assuming the receipt was from an ATM)?
2. Why would you NEED a receipt from a strip club? Employer reimbursement? Tax documentation?
