Bill Simmons’ Top Secret Project: He’s Supposedly Getting a Budget and Hiring a Staff to Start a Blog
It didn’t take long for word of Bill Simmons’ top secret project to leak out – a source relayed to us that ESPN is giving Simmons his own budget to hire a staff and start up a blog at ESPN.com. [UPDATE: An ESPN insider says it'll be a stand-alone website without the rigidity of ESPN.] His own version of Page 2? That remains to be seen. We called ESPN’s Rob King today in an attempt to get confirmation, but he would only offer “no comment.” Who will Simmons hand pick to be part of his staff? Will he lean on PTI executive producer Erik Rydholm for advice? Would he poach anyone from the Sportsnation crew? If you’ve heard anything, you know the drill. [Photo: Getty]

he should write more posts.
September 15th, 2010 at 12:38 PM
tyduffy just wet his pants.
September 15th, 2010 at 12:38 PM
Smart move – surprised this didn’t happen sooner. Will be huge traffic for ESPN.
September 15th, 2010 at 12:40 PM
Hopefully there will be many a mention of Karate Kid II.
September 15th, 2010 at 12:41 PM
First hire? Ghosts of BBoB.
September 15th, 2010 at 12:42 PM
tyduffy just wet his pants.
he voided his bladder slightly into his jodphurs, whilst considering the exact wording of the missive he was planning to pen on one William Simmons, which would illuminate Mr Simmons as to Duffy’s prestigious patronage, as well as is considerable ambition in the arena of sports blogging.
September 15th, 2010 at 12:42 PM
Obligatory Karate Kid/teen wolf joke.
September 15th, 2010 at 12:42 PM
Sure to be stubbornly uncorrupted and unbeholden.
September 15th, 2010 at 12:43 PM
shit. parentage, not patronage. Never mind.

Cracking up over here, Clay
September 15th, 2010 at 12:44 PM
I’ve enjoyed that Twitter feed so much more than the actual product at the time…kinda like when Bob Dole became likable after the ’96 election
September 15th, 2010 at 12:44 PM
He hired a staff to write a blog? He should have just gone the TBL route and have commenters write posts.
September 15th, 2010 at 12:44 PM
a source relayed to us that ESPN is giving Simmons his own budget to hire a staff and start up a blog at ESPN.com.
TBL better hope it’s not a Jets/Notre Dame/Big 10 blog, or he’ll be out of business.
September 15th, 2010 at 12:45 PM
I think we can count Chad Millman among his minions, he loves that guy. No word yet on Buddies J-Bug, House and Sully.
September 15th, 2010 at 12:45 PM
Page 2 is a blog. Why would you take attention away from something you’ve spent like 5+ years building a brand on? Same thing with Sports Guy’s World. I don’t read the guy and even I know what his stuff is branded as.
I’m sure ESPN has a helluva SEO and SEM staff but this just seems rather redundant.
You gotta learn how to use that mailto link. mailto:abc@TBL.com
September 15th, 2010 at 12:46 PM
Ha, I knew you’d be coming with that. I already fixed it.
September 15th, 2010 at 12:47 PM
Nobody reads Page 2 anymore.
September 15th, 2010 at 12:48 PM
a blog sponsored by ESPN, probably without comment sections, what’s the point in going there?
September 15th, 2010 at 12:49 PM
Didn’t LeBatard say he and Simmons were working on doing something together? Or was that TV-related?
September 15th, 2010 at 12:49 PM
It’s been through a few massive overhauls with editors and writers. I’m guessing that if he’s picking writers and running things, it would be a lot better.
September 15th, 2010 at 12:50 PM
That would be awesome if Simmons was of value to anyone or anything in society. Since he’s not, I hope it like VD tests, goes down in flames.
September 15th, 2010 at 12:50 PM
A sports blog?
A top secret project if I’ve ever seen one.
September 15th, 2010 at 12:50 PM
I have watched Sportsnation a couple times, it only makes me feel bad because I realize how dumb the rest of America is.
I imagine that most of those people are like that guy from The Fan.
September 15th, 2010 at 12:51 PM
Moving to Massechusetts, gay marriage.
September 15th, 2010 at 12:51 PM
Tom – i believe that was the roundtable thing they had one night prior to the LeBron ‘decision’
September 15th, 2010 at 12:51 PM
TBL better hope it’s not a Jets/Notre Dame/Big 10 blog, or he’ll be out of business.
At least he can rely on the athlete dong traffic
/got the market cornered
September 15th, 2010 at 12:51 PM
Maybe he takes the TBL approach and restricts commenting to a precious few. Can’t wait to hear J-Bug’s take on the NFL Bargaining Agreement.
September 15th, 2010 at 12:53 PM
From what I got out of Book of Basketball, Simmons doesn’t really have an interest in being on television. It’s the only thing of his I’ve read though, so maybe he’s expressed interest elsewhere. He did say a few times though that he wasn’t made for TV, he’s more cut out for writing.
Yeah, that’s true. They should keep the name though. People know it. Avoids the ordeal of having to make yourself search engine friendly all over again by creating a new sub-domain.
September 15th, 2010 at 12:55 PM
When is that picture from? He is not aging well and is one bout of phlebitis away from looking like Glenn Beck.
September 15th, 2010 at 12:55 PM
So Simmons, the guy that everyone hates on here but talks about all the time, is starting a blog that everyone will complain about, but read voraciously
TBL better hope it’s not a Jets/Notre Dame/Big 10 blog, or he’ll be out of business.
would you rather have more hoops and soccer posts?
September 15th, 2010 at 12:55 PM
Rangers re-sign Marc Staal.
September 15th, 2010 at 12:56 PM
@SC – Page 2 is pretty worthless now with that Sports and Girls comic the worse thing ever seen by man. Simmons is really the only thing going for it now and he writes just one column a week.
September 15th, 2010 at 12:56 PM
i’m sure Sully would have a well written post about the duality of fandom in the United States, post Larry Bird and Bill Buckner era.
September 15th, 2010 at 12:56 PM
Nobody reads Page 2 anymore.
spencer reads Uni Watch. I say reads, he browses it for pictures of male athlete ass.
September 15th, 2010 at 12:56 PM
Some serious Haters Gonna Hate going on in here.
September 15th, 2010 at 12:56 PM
Holy shit… the Rangers signed a player that isn’t coming to the end of his prime. And they didn’t overpay him!
/faints
September 15th, 2010 at 12:57 PM
i thought they already had ESPNBoston
September 15th, 2010 at 12:57 PM
I say Leitch and Berry make it on there. Simmons finally gets a place for his “Great Moment in White Shadow” column.
September 15th, 2010 at 12:57 PM
Seems like FSV corporate espionage.
September 15th, 2010 at 12:58 PM
Tom
that guy didn’t spend 8 years in sports commenting medical school to have you call him Tom
September 15th, 2010 at 12:58 PM
Fail.
September 15th, 2010 at 12:58 PM
Bill Simmons looks like he smells like piss.

Some serious Haters Gonna Hate going on in here.
Simmons & Cowherd “move the needle” @ TBL
September 15th, 2010 at 12:59 PM
Also I think it’s great he’s starting a blog, what with being one of the most long lasting “bloggers aren’t journalists” guys out there even though he’s 1) not a journalist and 2) a blogger.
September 15th, 2010 at 12:59 PM
That guy has his own blog, which is better than his Page 2 column.
September 15th, 2010 at 12:59 PM
Fail.
I accept that.
September 15th, 2010 at 12:59 PM
Holy shit… the Rangers signed a player that isn’t coming to the end of his prime. And they didn’t overpay him!
They will probably have to bury Redden in Hartford – so there is a link to an overpaid player they signed at the end of his prime.
September 15th, 2010 at 12:59 PM
Jim – They can overhaul it and give it a makeover. Especially if it’s something that Simmons is pimping and revamping personally. I remember when Cowherd started a ‘blog’ for a short amount of time. He has a ton of listeners but I don’t think it was that great of a traffic success because the content wasn’t all that unique and they weren’t getting the casual internet surfer via search engines. Gotta be search engine friendly.
When TBL added his meta tags (think it was shortly before the Tiger scandal) it certainly helped this site’s casual traffic.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:00 PM
By the way his piece on the FIBA gold medal game was pretty good, and gives a great picture of how good USA basketball is going to be for the next decade.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:01 PM
I’m certain of one thing, this is just going to make me hate Boston sports more.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:02 PM
Maybe he takes the TBL approach and restricts commenting to a precious few.
Precious few? Aren’t there like 6 people in the entire universe that are banned from commenting here?
September 15th, 2010 at 1:02 PM
Oy, Deadspin. Like AJ wouldn’t take an offer to work for tWWL or Simmons in a second.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:03 PM
Agree and LOL.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:03 PM
exactly. I never listen to his podcast.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:03 PM
Hey, if Leitch makes it on there no way I can get a comment through. I think I’m on an enemies list of his for not buying a deadspin t-shirt
September 15th, 2010 at 1:04 PM
I didn’t need that game to figure that out.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:06 PM
By the way his piece on the FIBA gold medal game was pretty good, and gives a great picture of how good USA basketball is going to be for the next decade.
Link?
September 15th, 2010 at 1:06 PM
By the way his piece on the FIBA gold medal game was pretty good, and gives a great picture of how good USA basketball is going to be for the next decade
maybe three players from that team will play in the 2012 Olympics
September 15th, 2010 at 1:06 PM
I would imagine it would be like what Page 2 was like once upon a time, when it had good writers and good content. I think it’s a good idea, but I hope it’s not another excuse to not do columns. I admit I still like and read Simmons.
Oh, no doubt. Right up there with the stealthiest of stealth aircraft, I’m sure.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:08 PM
Worth noting again: Haters gonna hate.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:08 PM
No shit. He wasn’t talking about just this team.
Here you go Homer
September 15th, 2010 at 1:09 PM
hire intern jace
September 15th, 2010 at 1:10 PM
No shit. He wasn’t talking about just this team.
no shit. i was just adding that
September 15th, 2010 at 1:11 PM
If he’s not considering it, he should. Wonder what Deadspin’s numbers have looked like since he’s taken over.
I thought Daulerio would be good in the top spot there, but I’ve been pretty unimpressed. Some people are just better lieutenants than they are generals.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:11 PM
Page 2 was originally guys like Whitlock, Ralph Wiley, Simmons, and of course, Hunter S Thompson
September 15th, 2010 at 1:11 PM
Who other than Durant, Irish?
Rose looked terrible and isn’t a distribute PG the way that Williams and Paul can be. He has talent to be there, but I would put him a distant 3rd to the other 2.
Wesbrook may be a keeper because he is willing to do the dirty work.
Anyone else?
September 15th, 2010 at 1:11 PM
No shit?
September 15th, 2010 at 1:11 PM
gone up.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:12 PM
Up substantially if memory serves. Quality? EHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh not so much.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:14 PM
You need a budget to start a blog? From what I’ve seen you dont even need to be literate, see http://spartyandfriends.com/ for confirmation.
/i kid, i kid
September 15th, 2010 at 1:14 PM
Who other than Durant, Irish?
Rose and maybe Iggy. have to think Lamar Odom wont return
September 15th, 2010 at 1:14 PM
Deadspin gets more views now than it used to? Wow. I see how Paul Blart made so much money and I think I’m now going to throw out everything I ever learned in film school about screenwriting. My next script will be written in crayon on write-a-mats
September 15th, 2010 at 1:15 PM
That was back when, I thought, Page 2 was a must read.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:16 PM
stark – i believe 4 people have been banned. over 8,300 subscribers who have signed up to comment in 4+ yrs
September 15th, 2010 at 1:16 PM
Someone mentioned above the comments issue. Since he has such a massive following, wouldnt commenting become such a problem? Didn’t this issue come up a couple years ago when ESPN allowed commenting and Deadspinners bombed the comments with outrageous posts? Isn’t that going to be a huge problem with any type of Simmons’ blog? Most of the fun on all sports blogs is the commenting\commenters — I think it would prove impossible to keep the commenting reasonable. Sounds like it would just become his archives page, but with up-to-date topics.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:17 PM
Gawker Network, has nothing to do with quality.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:18 PM
Have Page 2′s numbers gone up significantly as well? Maybe Simmons should be scouring Bleacher Report for his staff
September 15th, 2010 at 1:19 PM
I admit, I’m surprised to see that. Other than Drew Magary’s posts, and maybe when they do a book excerpt, I’m not there much because their content seems so uneven to me. My 2 cents.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:19 PM
KingGrizz is right about the commenting. The only you could do it is to have commenter log-ins and then closely monitor the comments at all times.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:19 PM
Two words: comment ninjas.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:20 PM
What he said. Marginally accurate proof.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:20 PM
To add: the real enjoyment in commenting is getting the author’s feedback in the comment section and having them defend themselves. I don’t think that would happen with Simmons’ crew.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:21 PM
Two words: comment ninjas.
Sportsgal already works so hard here.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:21 PM
A blog run on ESPN with Simmons in charge wouldn’t really need to “build community”. If they chose to have a comments section I’m sure they’ll have a policy that would limit the nonsense.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:21 PM
Deadspin is horrible.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:22 PM
They have, but not significantly. Subdomains are hard to measure because the way that people arrive at them is different.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:22 PM
I don’t think that would happen with Simmons’ crew.
I don’t think we have any idea how Simmons crew would operate, but I’m fairly certain we’d get some of his handpicked elite to do so. Hell, that would probably be a significant portion of their job. ESPN does have a few writers that will get in the trenches with their smashmortion of a comment section.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:23 PM
stark – i believe 4 people have been banned.
I can think of at least 8.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:23 PM
Does anyone actually read the comments on ESPN articles? It’s the sports equivalent of reading the comments on youtube videos. I’m not saying we’re the smartest group of people on the internet, but I AM saying ESPN readers in the comments section are the stupidest group of people on the internet.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:24 PM
Deadspin is horrible.
I surf over there once in a while to see if there is a new Dead Wrestler of the Week. Those are good reads.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:24 PM
Would you have preferred a naked picture of Joakim Noah?
September 15th, 2010 at 1:24 PM
Absolutely not. It’s a shame too, because I bet there are a select few in there that are pretty informative and/or funny.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:25 PM
To add: the real enjoyment in commenting is
dropping C-bombs, and calling former Mrs Universe contestants ugly
September 15th, 2010 at 1:25 PM
the comments on whitlocks articles at Fox Sports are hilarious and stupid.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:25 PM
All of dis shit right hurr.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:26 PM
the comments on whitlocks articles at Fox Sports are hilarious and stupid.
Preferred the ones he used to get on his Star columns. Every third comment was clearly written by a hardcore racist.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:26 PM
Really? Those are some brave souls. Is there really anything positive that they can garner from doing that? If anything, they just open themselves up to doing something stupid.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:26 PM
Wow, I’ve never thought to read them. I bet they are amazing.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:27 PM
Actually that applies to most newspaper comment sections, now that I think about it.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:27 PM
Does anyone actually read the comments on ESPN articles? It’s the sports equivalent of reading the comments on youtube videos
Youtube comments are quite entertaining. Especially the music videos — if it is anything reasonably popular it always ends up being a white\black or straight\gay thing. And it gets mean.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:28 PM
Yes. On all topics.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:29 PM
Thompson’s stuff there was pretty meh. What would be a modern equivalent of this? Ray Ratto (fat guy), Scoop Jackson (token black guy), and I don’t know, Stephen King? (eccentric guy who doesn’t usually write about sports). What a craptastic lineup that is. I’m a genius!
September 15th, 2010 at 1:29 PM
Actually that applies to most newspaper comment sections, now that I think about it.
just about anywhere there are comments made, and nobody to delete them constantly, every other comment is made by an -ist.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:29 PM
Yeah that’s basically what I mean. At least half of ESPN comment sections will devolve into race, politics, or flame wars, with horrible spelling and capitalization.
Also the interface of it is horrible.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:30 PM
Dirt: Here’s the problem with deadspin. I hate the layout of the site which makes the message board ridiculously cluttered and one of the worst internet experiences of my entire life, especially when the comments suck donkey dicks.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:30 PM
Bill Simmons has a pretty decent knowledge of the game of basketball. Would he really want Scoop Jackson anywhere near his brand?
September 15th, 2010 at 1:30 PM
What the fuck man. Thompson began is career as a sports writer and consistently wrote about sports throughout his career.
Though I agree his stuff on there was meh, you could tell he was tired.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:31 PM
They make their page views public.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:32 PM
Dirt: Here’s the problem with deadspin
you: Preaching:: Me: Singing Hymns
I don’t go there, unless there is nothing at all going on here, and i end up clicking a few posts and leaving. I never read the comments anywhere else for long.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:32 PM
When did TBL stop doing that? I just noticed it’s not on the sidebar anymore.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:33 PM
Yeah that’s basically what I mean. At least half of ESPN comment sections will devolve into race, politics, or flame wars, with horrible spelling and capitalization.
YOU DON”T KNOW WHAT YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT, YOU FAT LIBERAL WHITE DOUCHEBAG. GO SKINS!
September 15th, 2010 at 1:33 PM
And titled his suicide note “Football season is over”.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:33 PM
He was? I’m only familiar with Fear & Loathing and Campaign ’72, didn’t know that.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:34 PM
I’m gonna borrow book of basketball from my buddy when he’s finished with it. He says it’s excellent. I’m gonna read it. I’m gonna read it and I hate Bill Simmons but i respect his love and admiration for the NBA.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:34 PM
I’m not sure TBL’s have even been public. The sitemeter icon is directly below the comment box, but it’s private.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:34 PM
Sitemeter is about as accurate as Compete, Mike. I have their MediaMetrix numbers. They’re actually higher than what Compete and SiteMeter have.
Their unique visitors have surprisingly leveled off and even dropped on some months. They’re getting the views but typically only attract a new audience when something like the Favre peen or Hamilton pictures come out.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:35 PM
Word, Brah, Word.

/doesn’t understand Page 2 at all anymore
September 15th, 2010 at 1:35 PM
I was kidding but you never know. I know he gets along well with Jemele Hill, she could have the inside track on the ‘token black’ title.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:36 PM
Didn’t there used to be a sidebar thing of the posts with the most hits?
September 15th, 2010 at 1:36 PM
Spelling and grammar are way too good…try again.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:36 PM
Sports Illustrated was the magazine he was writing for on that trip.
Superbike racing, win on sunday, sell on monday
September 15th, 2010 at 1:37 PM
He says it’s excellent. I’m gonna read it.
It’s not excellent. It’s a reasonable read, but commuting or toilet worthy. Not as the primary book you are reading.
If you hate Bill Simmons, you may not get through chapter 2. i advise you to skip to the last 3 words of it, and move straight one.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:37 PM
Outlaw Journalist is a pretty good read, weeze. Check it out. It’s William McKeen’s bio on Hunter. Good shitter reading.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:38 PM
Oh, that — I thought it was just like the five most popular posts he’s ever had. Not something where he shows his monthly page views for all the world to see.
I don’t pretend to know how these things work, but Deadspin has the SiteMeter code embedded in their site — wouldn’t those therefore be the most accurate?
September 15th, 2010 at 1:38 PM
Where the Buffalo Roam.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:38 PM
Yeah I guess you’re right, never thought about that.
And I had no idea that’s what that little icon was down there.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:40 PM
Clay getting all Ny Times book rview’d and shit.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:40 PM
I remember SC mentioning TBL’s site #’s one time, and TBL took him to task that his numbers were wrong.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:40 PM
God that sentence sucked.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:41 PM
If you hate Bill Simmons, you may not get through chapter 2.
that’s funny because im stuck at Ch 3
September 15th, 2010 at 1:41 PM
Google Analytics is the tops for personal shops or sites under a few million uniques. Each different measurement tool uses a different method to measure. MediaMetrix is typically seen as the Nielsen ratings of internet traffic.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:41 PM
We were talking about it last night. I liked the concept of the “what if’s” chapter and i was also pleased to hear his top players of all time was not completely homerific.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:42 PM
That’s because I used Compete. I’ve never run a MediaMetrix request here, mostly because I don’t care.
I know more about this than you do.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:43 PM
how many of you have already sent witty emails to simmons hoping he likes you
September 15th, 2010 at 1:43 PM
I don’t like Simmons because he still tries to keep up the “I’m just a regular outside” shtick while hamming it up with celebrities and getting access to everything, he’s just another bullshit populist fraud in that respect. But I separate that from his writing (when he’s not name dropping) and will give his stuff a chance each time. Some of it I don’t like, some I do, but I definitely don’t like him.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:44 PM
I sent him one about reading his first “book” while sitting in class in college, piss drunk, and busting out laughing at a story about a fight at a wedding. In the middle of a class discussion on rape laws.
September 15th, 2010 at 1:44 PM
that’s funny because im stuck at Ch 3
Once he gets to the individual player rankings, you can read it a lot quicker, and there’s more frequent breaks. I’d skip ahead to that stuff if I were you.
Well, you can just go straight ahead and find where he ranked Lebron, and then remember that he wrote it right before Lebron won his first of his two back to back NBA titles 2 years ago. That part is really funny in retrospect.

I think he disregards Kobe a little bit but yeah, it was mostly bereft of bias.

I liked the concept of the “what if’s” chapter and i was also pleased to hear his top players of all time was not completely homerific.
the top players of all time is also not completely revisionist, or stuck on the notion that today’s players must be the best. Of course, you could easily argue that this guy’s stuck in the 80′s

last good thing he wrote was about his dog.

This. I don’t like the guy but I am consistently entertained by his material. He’s like a non-pedo Michael Jackson for me.

I like his work, and I guess I relate to some of the things he writes about because he’s my age.
But I don’t need to like him to enjoy his work.
Most of the time, even people you like and respect because of their work are people that you might not even like if you met them in real life.

I don’t have too many must-reads, to be honest. The only one that I read every day is Tony Barnhart. Ivan Maisel is another one.
