Yardwork: Rays Seize Control of AL East
Rays 1, Yankees 0 (11 innings): An awesome pitcher’s duel between CC and David Price was determined by Reid Brignac’s homer in the 11th inning. He was thrown into the mix after Carl Crawford was tossed in the ninth for arguing a called third strike. After listening this morning to MLB Network’s Peter Gammons discuss the grenade they’ll be taking to this Rays team in the offseason, is there any point in seeing them do well? Sounds like the 1997 Marlins part deux. Inspiring stuff.
Padres 6, Rockies 4: Miguel Tejada and his 4 RBIs said no to the Rockies. If San Diego plans on relying on those kind of heroics, they will lose the division.
Los Mets 1, Butt Pirates 0 (10 innings): This song is amazing!
Phillies 11, Marlins 4: The Philly bats are… alive! I’m ready to hand the NL East to the Phils.
Braves 4, Nationals 0: Eight innings and 12 strikeouts from Derek Lowe. He’s in vintage Fall form. Too bad no one else on this team is prepared to put their grapefruits on the table.
Reds 7, Diamondbacks 2: Jay Bruce went deep twice and Bronson Arroyo’s rock ‘n roll leg kick was good for six innings of two-run ball. Everyone celebrated the win by jamming out to this emotional rollercoaster from Whitesnake.
Red Sox 5, Mariners 1: As if it’s his sole purpose in life, Fister got fisted again.
And finally, a touching toast to the comments section:

forget the attendance, lets talk about them breaking up the Rays again!
September 14th, 2010 at 11:49 AM
Irish, Gammons was all over it this morning. Sounds retarded.
September 14th, 2010 at 11:49 AM
Scott Stapp’s Marlins song has competition.
September 14th, 2010 at 11:50 AM
a lot of yanks fans were there.
now i am worried about the yanks. when nobody is hitting the ball while CC is on the mound, they are in trouble. the rest of the staff is a mess. and i can’t believe the best and most consistent pitcher in the bullpen is Kerry Wood.
September 14th, 2010 at 11:51 AM
The Stapp Marlins song will never topped.
“We want strikeouts, base hits, double play-ayyyyyyys….”
September 14th, 2010 at 11:51 AM
a lot of yanks fans were there.
more Yanks fans in Tampa than Rays fans. sad but true
i just find it funny, bloggers, experts, etc always bash the Rays but can never give them credit for how well they are playing baseball. happened when they went to the World Series. hate the little team that could.
September 14th, 2010 at 11:53 AM
Yeah. That’s not good.
September 14th, 2010 at 11:54 AM
Irish, I have always liked the Rays. Anyone who likes baseball should appreciate their style of play.
But blowing up a team because they’re cheap fucks is not acceptable.
September 14th, 2010 at 11:54 AM
let’s talk about how after taking a step forward giving Greinke the Cy Young last year we’re going to take about 8 steps back giving it to CC or Price this year.
September 14th, 2010 at 11:54 AM
he has been outstanding. it’s not bad thing. just surprising.
September 14th, 2010 at 11:55 AM
fetch, CC won’t get it.
September 14th, 2010 at 11:55 AM
David Coverdale is a giant piece of shit.
September 14th, 2010 at 11:56 AM
also, wonderful yardwork TSH. One of the best ones yet.
September 14th, 2010 at 11:56 AM
I haven’t seen a stitch of baseball in 10 days. Kinda ashamed in myself. Maybe I’ll watch a late game tonight or something.
September 14th, 2010 at 11:56 AM
Did I hear correctly that Jimmy Rollins is hurt again?
If there was a salary cap this problem wouldn’t exist. Right? Right?
September 14th, 2010 at 11:57 AM
Let’s have a toast for the assholes! Let’s have a toast for the jerkoffs, who always take workoff!
September 14th, 2010 at 11:57 AM
Tawny didn’t think so.
September 14th, 2010 at 11:57 AM
But blowing up a team because they’re cheap fucks is not acceptable.
same was said last summer about how they were blowing the team up before the trade deadline. Carl Crawford wants to retire with the Rays. Longoria isnt going anywhere. what players are they talking about? Pena? meh he can go
September 14th, 2010 at 11:58 AM
THIS.
September 14th, 2010 at 11:58 AM
Irish, I have always liked the Rays. Anyone who likes baseball should appreciate their style of play.
i can’t like ‘em because they’re in the AL East, but I will say they have a top 5 scouting dept in baseball.
orioles continue to win themselves out of a top 5 pick. bittersweet, i guess.
September 14th, 2010 at 11:58 AM
Hernia, there’s a studio version of Runaway you can download on Funkmaster Flex’s blog.
September 14th, 2010 at 11:58 AM
Tawny didn’t think so.
I think we know how rational her choices have been.
September 14th, 2010 at 11:59 AM
I was under the impression that the Rays model was sustainable, and they’re slowly investing in the future (ie, Longoria’s contract).
September 14th, 2010 at 11:59 AM
If there’s a year it’s not going to matter (much), it’s this one. Next year’s draft is fucking loaded.
September 14th, 2010 at 11:59 AM
Tonight begins Ozzie’s last stand…this team is just stupid enough to sweep the Twins (avoiding the #5 spot in the rotation helps) just to build my hopes up and then lose 2 of 3 to the Tigers to fall right back out of it
September 14th, 2010 at 12:00 PM
Wait, why is giving it to Price such a giant step back?
September 14th, 2010 at 12:00 PM
Keep on losing. Twins are in dire need of home field.
September 14th, 2010 at 12:00 PM
Carl Crawford to the Tigers!
September 14th, 2010 at 12:01 PM
Price will probably get it. I love it that the Yankees are playing poorly now, but they will come around in the playoffs.
Don’t look now, but the road to the WS could go through MN this year. Twins have a good chance of having the best record in baseball if the Rays and Yankees keep beating each other.
September 14th, 2010 at 12:01 PM
Great. The Indians will have another top 5 pick after next year too. And, they can use it on the 1 guy in the top 15 that will suck ass.
/sigh
September 14th, 2010 at 12:02 PM
@starkweather – Jeff Passan.
September 14th, 2010 at 12:02 PM
Baby, I gotta plan, runaway fast as youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu can…
September 14th, 2010 at 12:03 PM
Next year’s draft is fucking loaded.‘
that’s what i keep reading. i guess i’m just worried about McPhail n Co fucking up a early first round pick when having a 1st or 2nd overall would pick itself.
September 14th, 2010 at 12:03 PM
September 14th, 2010 at 12:04 PM
“Run away as fast as you can. Run away from my baby. I’m about to get crazy. Why can’t she just runaway? Baby I got a plan – Runaway as fast as you can.”
September 14th, 2010 at 12:04 PM
Gammons said Garza will be traded as well. That’s the first I’ve heard of that.
September 14th, 2010 at 12:04 PM
I still say both Lee and Liriano have been better than Felix, but any order of those 3 works really.
September 14th, 2010 at 12:04 PM
SANDERS SING IT!
September 14th, 2010 at 12:05 PM
(inaudible autotune)
September 14th, 2010 at 12:05 PM
David Coverdale is a giant piece of shit.
You’re just jealous of his hair.
In all seriousness, not perhaps the greatest songwriter, but the guy does have some amazing pipes.
September 14th, 2010 at 12:06 PM
Coverdale hate? I really don’t know you people anymore.
September 14th, 2010 at 12:06 PM
(inaudible autotune)
Listening to NPR the other day, they said that all songs in the current top 10 on the pop charts contain some degree of autotune in the vocals. Just ridiculous.
September 14th, 2010 at 12:07 PM
This is pretty great.
September 14th, 2010 at 12:08 PM
In the still of the night! dun dun dun DAH dah, dun dun dun DAH dah
September 14th, 2010 at 12:08 PM
I’m all aboard the Gerrit Cole bandwagon, but there’s no way he’ll be there when the O’s pick. They’ll probably take a high school guy I wont know anything about.
September 14th, 2010 at 12:09 PM
Pats only favored by 1.5
September 14th, 2010 at 12:09 PM
I don’t know where I’m going….but I suuuure know where I’ve beeeeen….
September 14th, 2010 at 12:10 PM
In all seriousness, not perhaps the greatest songwriter, but the guy does have some amazing pipes.
The man can sing. Most of my disdain is a result of the abortion that was Coverdale Page.
September 14th, 2010 at 12:10 PM
King Felix should win it, but he won’t. Price or CC will probably win it.
September 14th, 2010 at 12:12 PM
The man can sing. Most of my disdain is a result of the abortion that was Coverdale Page.
Hard to hate Coverdale for that considering some of the other poor choices that Jimmy has made post-Zeppelin.
It takes all of my love for Zeppelin to forgive Jimmy for the atrocity that was “Come With Me”. Really Jimmy? The fucking Godzilla soundtrack? You didn’t have enough fucking money already?
September 14th, 2010 at 12:15 PM
Definitely should be King Felix. Here’s a good quick and dirty graph (h/t Sweetspot):
September 14th, 2010 at 12:16 PM
The fucking Godzilla soundtrack?
I thought it was universally agreed upon that this didn’t happen. I had myself convinced that Page died in 1981.

I had myself convinced that Page died in 1981.
I think Robert Plant likes to think so sometimes.
September 14th, 2010 at 12:18 PM
Regarding blowing up the Rays, I do not understand this. Desmond Jennings can replace Crawford. Davis and Hellickson into the rotation if they do have to trade Garza. Pena’s provided power, but a cheap first base option should be easy enough to come by. Where are the devastating losses coming from?
September 14th, 2010 at 12:19 PM
Bill Conlin still votes, right? He’ll take one look at that 11-11 record and completely disregard him.
September 14th, 2010 at 12:19 PM
I think Robert Plant likes to think so sometimes.
+1 red snapper
September 14th, 2010 at 12:22 PM
I wonder how many people here will get that
September 14th, 2010 at 12:23 PM
Annnd here’s Joe Morgan on the Cy race:
I think it’s a joke to have that kind of debate. What Sabathia has done is be the best pitcher in the AL from opening day to this point. I don’t buy into the point that if Felix is pitching for someone else he’d have more wins. They said that about Cliff Lee when he left Seattle, but he’s lost more than he’s won since he left Seattle. The name of the game is to win and he’s won. And if you’re looking at a second guy, it has to be David Price. It’s amazing to me that we have let computers define him rather than performance. His job is to win the game, not just pitch 5-6 innings. I don’t think there should be a debate between Felix and Sabathia.
September 14th, 2010 at 12:24 PM
If it wasn’t for my horse, I wouldn’t have spent that year in college.
September 14th, 2010 at 12:25 PM
RIP FJM.
September 14th, 2010 at 12:27 PM
I need this explained.
September 14th, 2010 at 12:33 PM
I had “Kashmir” as my ring tone until some asshole said, “Hey, isn’t that the Godzilla song?”
I’m still not fully convinced that Joe Morgan isn’t playing the character of Joe Morgan on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball, at all times. No man can be that dense.
September 14th, 2010 at 12:36 PM
I had “Kashmir” as my ring tone until some asshole said, “Hey, isn’t that the Godzilla song?”
I hope you stashed the body somewhere safe.
September 14th, 2010 at 12:36 PM
Well done. Lewis Black is criminally under quoted in real life situations.
September 14th, 2010 at 12:38 PM
Let Coach Lew explain it
September 14th, 2010 at 2:00 PM
Gammons is an assbag. The Rays lose Carlos Pena and Carl Crawford. That’s it. Rafael Soriano, too, probably, but closers are extremely overrated and JP Howell will be back anyway.
Two players does not a “breaking the team up” make.
September 15th, 2010 at 2:42 AM
how are they blowing up the team? Crawford is gone because of payroll issues but thats it. Pena isn’t worth what he’s gonna be paid (or they’ll keep him) and maybe they trade shields or garza because they have a plethora of pitching, getting something extremely useful. Jennings replaces Crawford. What am I missing?
/Paolo’d to the extreme
September 15th, 2010 at 2:43 AM
I like bubbaprog. Forgot about Soriano. Love “I’d sign him for five seasons” out of David Ortiz.
September 15th, 2010 at 2:48 AM
and souvenir city doesn’t get lewis black humor? shameful. Good job everyone who pointed out this “the Rays will break up” narrative is foolish. I’ll now retire the comment leader for the next five hours.
