USC Punished For Hubris, But Claims of a Trojans’ Demise Are Premature
Baxter Holmes’ LA Times Magazine article details how USC football’s excessive hubris – emboldened by Mike Garrett and Pete Carroll – led to and exacerbated its NCAA sanctions. There’s animosity toward USC. This story will delight the program’s many critics, but claims about the Trojan’s imminent demise might be premature.
Pete Carroll’s “Win Forever” philosophy inspired on the field, but was detrimental off it. USC was defiant when faced with NCAA inquiries. The athletic department was combative and summarily ignored potential lines of inquiry.
Within USC’s athletics department, a key early media report that alleged star tailback Reggie Bush had a relationship with an agent was considered “sensationalistic,” the NCAA stated. Even limited inquiries were not undertaken.
School officials waited more than two years after accusations surfaced to contact would-be sports marketer Lloyd Lake, who said he had given Bush cash and other perks while Bush played at USC.
Instead of refuting Lake’s evidence, USC painted him—perhaps the key figure in this case—as a convicted felon who couldn’t be trusted.
The sanctions are gratifying. Immodest USC is getting its comeuppance, but, in our zeal, we may be overstating their effect.
USC loses 30 scholarships over three years. That sounds devastating, but they emphasize quality over quantity anyway. USC generally uses 18-20 of their 25 scholarships. They have enrolled more than 20 players once since 2003. Instead of losing 10 scholarships per year, it is three to five. The postseason ban will be a minor issue and only for this class. Depth problems may bite them in a few games, but, as long as the Trojans continue getting top level recruits they should be fine.
Lane Kiffin has not proved himself to be a good coach. He has not proven himself to be a bad one either. He may be a jerk, but he can coach offense. He can recruit. His father’s issues defending the spread should be sorted out eventually. Even if Kiffin falls on his face, USC can find a top-level replacement. It’s probably the top job in college football. It’s a great lifestyle. It’s easy to recruit there. The Pac-10 is not the SEC.
On multiple occasions, USC officials approached Carroll about the possibility of self-imposing sanctions on the football team to stave off harsher penalties. Each time, Carroll refused, said a source close to the program.
USC may tumble catastrophically from its perch, but its equally, if not more, likely USC will be back competing for a national title the moment they are eligible.

It’s probably the top job in college football.
Wait, huh?
September 14th, 2010 at 2:05 PM
Lane Kiffin has not proved himself to be a good coach.
I like it when you make grammatical errors.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:06 PM
This kind of makes my head spin.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:06 PM
This is incongruous with everything I’ve ever read about college football on this site.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:06 PM
Fuck ‘em.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:06 PM
I know you put probably in there, but I have a feeling many people will disregard it. I think you could take it out of there and I’d agree with it.
I wonder why USC hasn’t gone the route of Texas within the Pac-10… meaning, why haven’t they tried to hold the conference hostage or start their own network? They’re the biggest draw as far as football, right? Texas is more suited because they have a solid basketball program as well, but anyone have any reasons?
Oh, and as for the actual premise of the piece… yeah, USC will be just fine. They might loose out on some stud freshman who are looking for playing time right away but outside of that, the recruits don’t care as long as USC is still located near LA.

You must not have watched UVA outplay them at home. UVA! U-fucking-VA.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:08 PM
This is why karmic justice would have the Seahawks doing horribly this year. No justice that Carroll gets to run away at the sniff of sanctions and get off scot fre.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:09 PM
I’m not sure if this is the case. Pete Carroll was probably USC’s sixth choice (granted, he worked out in terms of winning) and they certainly could have done a lot better than Lane Kiffin.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:09 PM
I drunkenly rooted my ass off for the Wahoos Saturday night.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:10 PM
even tho USC has been a juggernaut, they still don’t make that much money as an athletic dept.
i agree that USC is the top job in CFB. best location, a top team, easy conference.

That sucks Sanders. It looks like I’m resting my hopes with Tony Moeaki and Dallas Clark as my Hawkeyes in NFL to root for this year.

I love Kiffin. He is the ultimate villian. He and Vince McMahon should form a tag team.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:14 PM
USC is done. They will never compete for the Pac-10 title again. The beast is about to awaken and it begins this weekend in Wisconsin.

It’s not a bad strategy, but you can’t pay a guy that much more to play possibly only one game. And now I doubt it will matter. If Schefter’s right, I doubt he plays another game in a Colts’ uniform.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:15 PM
Me too. Well, not the drunken part
Is it acceptable to have a “team B” to root for when your “A Team” is already showing signs of being a disappointment? Love my Hokies win or lose, but thinking really pulling hard for Navy. For some un-known reason, their games are televised on the radio here and I listened this past weekend. I like their fight. Verdict?

I think Lane is more Shane McMahon. Making his dollars, but trading on his father’s name.

I would love to know how Bob went from being an ironman in college to being so frail in the NFL. Guy delivered countless punishing hits when I was in school and just can’t stay on the field in the NFL.

September 14th, 2010 at 2:24 PM
Let’s talk about the potential demise of USC after they play a few real teams… They don’t look very good right now.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:25 PM
You can make cases for other jobs. Just think USC has as much tradition as anyone else, an optimum location and it’s an easy conference but you get credit for playing in a tough one. It’s like Florida, but you don’t have to play an SEC schedule. A really good coach can do what a Carroll did. A decent one, just from inertia, should win 10 games every year.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:25 PM
Andy did you really expect Sanders would be healthy all season? As a person who put up with Mike Brown for years I don’t know how any Colts fan could ever expect anything less than another injury for this guy.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:26 PM

September 14th, 2010 at 2:26 PM
how bout those Seahawks week 1? Pete Carroll blowing them out of the water
September 14th, 2010 at 2:26 PM
USC is in for some long days. This year is just a preview. They are going to have very little depth, meaning one or two injuries will really hurt them. They won’t feel the full brunt of the sanctions until 2013-2014. They are going to be second fiddle in the Pac 10 as long as Chip Kelly is at Oregon for at least 5 years now.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:27 PM

Pete Carroll carrying on like he won the fucking Super Bowl during the game made me want to kick people in the face. That guy was running onto the field and jumping all over the place every second.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:28 PM
Don’t forget recruiting in a talent rich state with little to no other competition for that talent in-state when talking about USC.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:28 PM
Expect? No. Hope? Certainly. Especially after seeing him play in that Packers preseason game, it was as if he’d turned back the clock. I just like watching the guy play and appreciate what he brought to the game and to the Colts. I’m disappointed more than anything, not surprised, it’s not like I’m not used to it by now.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:28 PM
Shame for Sanders. I still think he’s as much the reason for the Colts finally winning a Super Bowl as Manning or Dungy.
And glad to see others picked up on that “best job in college football” bit. If all we’re using is recent history, cool locale and recruiting, then wouldn’t Miami qualify too?

September 14th, 2010 at 2:30 PM
i think a job is a hot commodity if it has recently won a championship (within 5-10 years) is still competitive, stocked with loads of talent, and not involved in NCAA sanctions. i don’t think tradition or schedule means anything.

Poor John Robinson. It’s been said, but the big money in the Pac 10 isn’t necessarily at USC. USC doesn’t even get their own city by default. UCLA has been a little rough for the last 10 years but all the advantages USC offers exist at UCLA just as much. Except for the much nicer campus environment. The money Nike pumps into Oregon keeps them on a level with everyone in the Pac 10 at any given time and Washington is a bit of a sleeping giant, too. Pete Carroll may be a lot of awful things but he didn’t walk into a gimme situation at USC and nobody can expect to just continue what he did there

He’s gotta deal with those academic restrictions though. It’s why Michigan or OSU would be preferable to ND. Harbaugh will definitely give USC some run ins on some guys, but for the most part, USC has major leverage in-state.

Ohio State over Oklahoma and Michigan. Ohio is a much, much better football state and an easier recruiting job. Plus we have four different iconic fight songs.

September 14th, 2010 at 2:47 PM
Husker – You see this? And the article linked at the bottom? Sounds like somebody we know is woefully uninformed.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:47 PM
Coaching at Texas > Coaching at OSU, easily. I feel like Mack doesn’t even work that hard at Texas and he has lots of built up equity there.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:47 PM
Here, SG. He’s also on twitter @the506

How would one draw the ass calipers?
September 14th, 2010 at 2:47 PM
Bob Stoops to OSU in 2014!
/obligatory
September 14th, 2010 at 2:47 PM
here’s one version, lefty
September 14th, 2010 at 2:48 PM
Lefty: Here ya go. I was way off on Ohio, though.
The top five states in Division I recruits for 2010 were Texas (408), Florida (355), California (323), Georgia (182) and Ohio (172).
September 14th, 2010 at 2:48 PM
i mean, it’s really splitting hairs between the top 3.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:48 PM
Haha. I did the same thing, but I got all kinds of mail from Auburn afterwards.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:48 PM
Unfair? He’s publicly apologizing. You realize her performance earlier in the show was about the whole situation, too?
Why am I arguing about this.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:49 PM
i shouldn’t have said anything. it definitely brings intrigue, but i think it brings very little substance to a deal. Saban went to Bammer because of the money more than anything. He also went their because he didn’t want to work as hard in recruiting, that’s for sure.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:49 PM
I have that bookmarked but clicked on the link anyways. I was disturbed to see an ad at the top for the Playtex Sports Tampon. Sports tampon? On second though, don’t explain it.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:49 PM
The ass calipers would be epic.
How would one draw the ass calipers?
you could make a dance! “Put your hands like this, and put your hands like that!”
September 14th, 2010 at 2:50 PM
Nebraska fans are worried about Pelini leaving. I don’t know if he is a good enough recruiter though. Meyer is not going to leave Fla and take a step down to coach OSU. Makes no sense. Now, if he leaves for the NFL and fails, I could see him going to OSU.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:50 PM
I mean really, they all should be sports tampons. Ideally you want to shove that thing up there and have it catch every muther effin drop!
September 14th, 2010 at 2:51 PM
Texas is a much better job than Ohio State. Ohio may put out 60-80 D-1 prospects a year. Texas puts out 300. Also, if you are from Texas and the Longhorns offer, it’s treated like a golden ticket. Texans are weird like that.
plus Austin>>>>>>>>>>Columbus
September 14th, 2010 at 2:51 PM
that wouldn’t be outlandish though…stoops is an ohio boy.
hell, we could probably steal pelini too.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:52 PM
I don’t agree that it is a step down.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:52 PM
Thank you, CJ!
September 14th, 2010 at 2:52 PM
I have no idea why you are arguing. I was just making a joke. Don’t you watch South Park?
September 14th, 2010 at 2:53 PM
THIS.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:54 PM
Money and ease of recruiting usually follow tradition.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:54 PM
Easy Hawk…
Draw two hands, attach the pinkies at the ends and stick the thumbs up at 135 degree angles… It kinds of looks like an extended “da U” sign or wide goalposts when playing paper football.
Epic.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:54 PM
wait…saban went to bama so he wouldn’t have to work as hard in recruiting?
so then why does saban go absolutely batshit when it comes to recruiting? this makes no sense at all sparty.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:55 PM
I don’t, so I’m out of the loop on the joke.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:55 PM
Yep, I won’t laugh harder for the week. + 1 CJ.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:55 PM
Completely off-topic, but I need some help:
So… I’m in the market for some new standard gym shoes just for walking around. Anyone got any suggestions? I’m terrible when it comes to footwear and my feet are starting to suffer for it. Please and thank you.

September 14th, 2010 at 2:56 PM
don’t argue with the SEC honk, sparty. he’s set in his ways.
but i think florida is a step up from OSU. same with texas and USC. financially they’re all extremely similar…the only difference is columbus weather blows and the city isn’t anywhere near as cool as austin.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:56 PM
Um SG…you realize that’s a dumb question right? It’s Vegas….
September 14th, 2010 at 2:56 PM
Gym shoes? Queer. If you aren’t working out in them or running in them… New Balances, meng.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:57 PM
I agree. I think he’d go, but I always think guys will go to their alma mater if asked.
Agree to disagree…but it is.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:57 PM
crocs.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:57 PM
I wasn’t saying OSU was a better job than Texas, just that it was a better job than Oklahoma.
And Texas’ fight song is weak, very weak.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:57 PM
nah, it’s more of this: _| |_ than this: |_|
September 14th, 2010 at 2:57 PM
Just realized this. Yeah SG. Just head to a bar, or a sports book. You’ll find the game that you want to watch.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:58 PM
You keep your dirty, Ohioian hands off the angelic Mr. Ferentz, Spencer. Not that he’d ever leave, but I would authorize full nuclear warfare on the entire state if it ever happened.
/awaits your response of only 2 BCS appearances in 9 years
September 14th, 2010 at 2:58 PM
SC – I still have heel spurs from my playing days. Swear by anything by ASICS, have a couple pairs of these.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:58 PM
he left Michigan State for LSU because he couldn’t beat Carr in state in recruiting. and he goes batshit crazy when others are screwing him in recruiting. doesn’t mean he likes to work hard at it. you don’t make sense.

If you’re looking at everyday shoes, I tend to light hiking shoes/mids or trail runners. Last longer and better construction. REI is your friend in this.
September 14th, 2010 at 3:00 PM
I don’t do either of these things… unless you count riding my bike. I have cleats for softball and skates for hockey, my lone physical activities.
New Balance, eh? Any particular model? Never owned a pair of those. Traditionally a Reebok or Adidas guy.
September 14th, 2010 at 3:00 PM
I love that the I’m a set-in-my-ways SEC honk is followed by “but i think florida is a step up from OSU.”
September 14th, 2010 at 3:00 PM
Toe shoes!
September 14th, 2010 at 3:00 PM
i was waiting for someone to point this out. It’s a family trip more than a gambling/casino trip. No one wants to drive to the strip and hang out in a smokey sports book.
September 14th, 2010 at 3:00 PM
crocs.
the ones that cum with a camera?
September 14th, 2010 at 3:00 PM
Clicking around on stark’s link, I found this. Pretty interesting.
September 14th, 2010 at 3:01 PM
i don’t make sense?
you say saban doesn’t like to recruit. i point to three years where he’s out-recruited basically everyone. saban is a masochist…he loves the grind.
and don’t kid yourself…saban left MSU for a better opportunity.
why the fuck would OSU go after kirk ferentz? jesus christ…we have a powerhouse to maintain, we don’t want to plummet into mediocrity.
September 14th, 2010 at 3:01 PM
Why did I feel the need to take that breakdown of the top 5 states for recruiting for 2010 and figure out which state lead per capita? It’s Florida, btw. Then Georgia. Then Texas, then Ohio. And verrrrrrry far behind the pack is California.
September 14th, 2010 at 3:01 PM
nah, it’s more of this: _| |_ than this: |_|
spot on. and just like the original thread, everyone is now trying this
September 14th, 2010 at 3:02 PM
well, both statements are true, are they not?
September 14th, 2010 at 3:02 PM
Aren’t you staying at a casino?
September 14th, 2010 at 3:03 PM

September 14th, 2010 at 3:03 PM

And thanks to everyone else for the suggestions. Apologies for hijacking the thread.

Nike Pegasus, most comfortable sneakers ever and my last 2 pairs that I have been wearing for 2 years straight.
September 14th, 2010 at 3:03 PM
No, staying at my cousin’s house. I might just walk to the Palace Station and watch the game.
September 14th, 2010 at 3:03 PM
and I think that just helps prove my point that the alabama job makes recruiting easier. thank you.
he would have taken the New York Giants job that offered him more money. He had 1 recruiting class better than Michigan, that’s it. Everyone knows that he bailed because Lloyd kicked his ass.
September 14th, 2010 at 3:04 PM
New Jersey would have a lot more if the area cared more about football and not about bullshit.
September 14th, 2010 at 3:05 PM
And Texas’ fight song is weak, very weak.
Utterly, devastatingly incorrect.
September 14th, 2010 at 3:07 PM
na. i only wear athletic-y type shoes when i work out…id recommend birkenstocks or new balances.
September 14th, 2010 at 3:07 PM
is anyone thinking of top programs as Nice Places to Live, Great Weather, Fine Place to Raise a Family? Seems like the cynical picks are ones fans would pick–winningest programs, location be damned. Sorry to say, but the type-A, apha dog mentality of the top coaches means quality of living takes a backseat to family needs. I mean, no one would choose to live in some of these places, as has been pointed out about Tallahassee or anywhere in bama or ohio
/any ted leo fans here? listening to tyrann
September 14th, 2010 at 3:07 PM
How is Miami not in everyones top 5?
1. Miami
2. USC
3. Texas – austin is not LA or Miami. and no one besides mack brown as won at texas in the modern era. By “won” I am talking national championships, and the modern era is the late 70′s/early 80′s when college football was fully integrated.
September 14th, 2010 at 3:07 PM
This has nothing to do with anything, but you should all see it.
September 14th, 2010 at 3:07 PM
To a degree. When the B10 takes over as the premier conference (which could happen next year) I will be the first to say it. It’s funny, actually. I get so much shit from my SEC friends because I argue that the B10 is a tough league, and then I get shit on here from the B10 guys. Such is life.
September 14th, 2010 at 3:07 PM

September 14th, 2010 at 3:07 PM
$$$
September 14th, 2010 at 3:08 PM
Because it’s not a top-5 job.
September 14th, 2010 at 3:08 PM
Sparty is right on about this. Saban didn’t want to be second fiddle, hated that he was being out recruited, so he went jumped ship and the awesome Bobby Williams was put in charge.
September 14th, 2010 at 3:09 PM
Different feet call for different shoes. Go to a running store and they’ll tell you which type of shoe is best (skinny/fat, flat/high arch, heel/ball pressure).
You don’t have to get running shoes, but the brand of shoe will guide you.
I can’t wear Nike shoes. Adidas and Asics feet my funky feet better than all.
September 14th, 2010 at 3:11 PM
meh…i give you shit out of hetero love, not animosity.
but i hate the big 10 too, so we have something in common.
September 14th, 2010 at 3:11 PM
4 different coaches have won at miami.
September 14th, 2010 at 3:13 PM
And then left. I think you’re missing the point of the exercise.
September 14th, 2010 at 3:13 PM
so what? everyone raids south florida for talent now. there’s no more “state of miami.”
September 14th, 2010 at 3:14 PM
You’ll be a part of the fraternity next year and your hometown school will be playing the Hawkeyes in the Cropduster Series for the Golden Ear of Corn by 2012 so there will be much less churlishness.
September 14th, 2010 at 3:14 PM
Tough for State to recruit. On a relatively level playing field with Michigan in state. Some kids are going to go where they’re going to go from family pressure. The advantage is Michigan can recruit out of state as well. Much harder for MSU.
September 14th, 2010 at 3:15 PM
No alumni base for consistent money. And all of those guys won, but how long did they stay? It isn’t a stable environment, which makes for a huge part of the job…
September 14th, 2010 at 3:16 PM
I saw somewhere that people were calling the rivalry “Farmageddon.” I really hope that sticks.
September 14th, 2010 at 3:17 PM
What the fuck does churlishness mean? And how did my phone go to that word from vulgar behavior?
September 14th, 2010 at 3:17 PM
That’s terrible.
September 14th, 2010 at 3:17 PM
I believe they all left for a professional coaching job (I am giving credit to Butch Davis and not Larry coker)
Best college football job in America means me a place that i would actually want to live, you have enough in-state talent, and a place where other coaches have won before.
September 14th, 2010 at 3:17 PM
farmageddon is awesome.
September 14th, 2010 at 3:17 PM
Miami is a very nice job, but from the trends, no one ever looks happy there.
September 14th, 2010 at 3:18 PM
Miami isn’t a top 5 job because it doesn’t pay that well in relative terms. Tallahassee, the city, is a shit hole. The gulf coast directly south of it (it’s not that far from Apalachicola) is some of the prettiest coastline on the planet. (For now)
September 14th, 2010 at 3:21 PM
and three of the 4 have left for pro jobs. nobody wins a title at one job, then jumps to another college job. they come crawling back.
September 14th, 2010 at 3:22 PM
It isn’t a stable environment, which makes for a huge part of the job…
I’m not sure how you define stable but there have been plenty of career assistants and admin in The U’s program. Coker would have never left but he also never would have won more than 5 games again if he’d stayed. The other guys all got eyes for the pros and moved on for the money. Which just brings back home why it isn’t as desirable a job for the high level, proven head coaches – there isn’t enough money in the program to bring those guys in
September 14th, 2010 at 3:22 PM
Duffy will be able to tell you without looking it up.
September 14th, 2010 at 3:23 PM
I thought it was hilarious. Come on, Lefty. It’s pretty damn funny.
September 14th, 2010 at 3:25 PM
If your program can’t afford to hire Tommy Tuberville, it’s not a top five job. End of story.
September 14th, 2010 at 3:25 PM
These are the mid-major and 1AA programs with head coaches that have been there 20 years. I don’t know of any offhand, but I’m sure they exist.
September 14th, 2010 at 3:25 PM
I also like Farmageddon.
