AP Voter Scott Wolf of the Los Angeles Daily News Is Not a Big Ten Football Fan
The Big Ten engenders resentment. It’s the default television conference for the Midwest and the Northeast. It receives more media attention than the football merits. There’s a backlash from other areas of the country. Fans in the South and west feel their local rivalries deserve equal billing with THE GAME. The spirit of reprisal has even infiltrated the ivory towers of the prestigious Associated Press Poll. Scott Wolf of the Los Angeles Daily News has been bludgeoning Big Ten teams all season, reserving particular venom for Wisconsin.
Big Ten teams have been rated in the Top 25 of the AP Poll thirteen times over the first three weeks. Only once, Iowa after the second week, was Wolf not on the extreme low end ranking Big Ten teams. He was on the moderate low end. Here are his Big Ten rankings.
Preseason: Ohio State #6 (55/59 higher, average 2.67), Iowa #14 (56/59 higher, average 9.22), Wisconsin #25 (59/59 higher, average 12.3), Penn State (unranked, actual #19)
Wolf is the only voter to have Wisconsin lower than #20. He is one of only eight AP voters to leave Penn State unranked.
Week 1: Ohio State #6 (59/59 higher, average 2.47), Iowa #13 (55/59 higher, average 8.6), Wisconsin #23 (59/59 higher, average 11.32), Penn State (unranked, actual #18)
Wolf has the lowest rating for Ohio State, one of seven voters ranking them lower than #3. Wolf is the only writer with Wisconsin ranked lower than #18. Wolf is one of six AP voters to have Penn State unranked.
Week 2: Ohio State #7 (58/58 higher, average 2.1), Iowa #10 (40/58 higher, average 8.42), Wisconsin #22 (58/58 higher, average 11.51), Michigan (unranked, actual #20), Penn State (unranked, actual #22)
Ohio State drops to #7, despite beating Wolf’s Week One #8 Miami. Wolf is the only AP voter with Ohio State lower than #3. Wolf is the only AP voter with Wisconsin ranked lower than 16. Wolf is one of only three AP voters to leave Michigan unranked.
Wolf is entitled to his opinion, even if it’s biased, but the problem is College Football polls aren’t for shits and giggles. They affect the season. The AP recused itself from the BCS process, but it still awards a national title. Journalists are creating the news they are supposed to cover. In Wolf’s case, he appears to be actively influencing the news based on personal prejudice. In what other genre of “journalism” would that be acceptable?

After their “effort” against San Jose State last weekend I have no qualms with dropping the Badgers…they look like dogshit, nowhere near the #11 team in the country right now
John Clay doesn’t look fully healthy coming back from ankle surgery

Fans in the South and west feel their local rivalries deserve equal billing with THE GAME.
I’d say that Big Boi and Lil’ Wayne deserves as equal billing as The Game.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:04 PM
Not to say your frustration isn’t valid, but at this point who really knows which team is better than another? If his polling is still out of whack towards the end of the season then I’d understand the complaint, but right now who’s better than who is anybody’s guess.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:04 PM
thank god the ap poll is meaningless now
September 13th, 2010 at 3:05 PM
Haters gonna Hate.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:05 PM
This is something new in sports?
September 13th, 2010 at 3:05 PM
Good work duffy, not sure how you found this.
Here is the link to his current pole, the one you linked to was preseason. This one is even worse.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:06 PM
This is just like, his opinion, man.
/This aggression will not stand
September 13th, 2010 at 3:07 PM
my guess is cursedcleveland
September 13th, 2010 at 3:07 PM
Actually, this is new in ANY kind of news, period? You should talk to Dan Rather.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:09 PM
Whats funny is that hes in love with the ACC, has FSU/NC (and LSU) higher than anyone. If you’re going to back someone other than gods conference, I’d avoid the ACC and anyone QB’s by Jordan Jefferson.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:09 PM
I’m a homer so of course I don’t agree with this statement. The football played in the former Confederacy gets a lot more attention if you ask me, a lot more undeserved as well.
There was a play I saw during halftime in Iowa City where he broke through a hole and got run down by a linebacker. I know he doesn’t have breakaway speed but when you’re out in the open, a linebacker shouldn’t run you down.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:09 PM
Yep
September 13th, 2010 at 3:10 PM
The AP poll: irrelevant since 2003.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:10 PM
i prefer the party of five scott wolf. so adorable.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:10 PM
I will not quit them.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:11 PM
A former co-worker of mine is the lone AP voter to put Boise State number one.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:11 PM
oh no
September 13th, 2010 at 3:12 PM
How the fuck do you have Texas #1 in the polls this week? Alabama clearly looks like the dominant team.
Since when does taking a stand like this actually influence other AP voters to follow your lead? Isn’t he just chopping down trees in an abandoned forest at this point?
September 13th, 2010 at 3:12 PM
Babar: You know with these college football polls there’s a lotta ins, lotta outs, lotta what-have-yous. And, uh, lotta strands to keep in my head, man.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:13 PM
Those fans are correct. Harvard/Yale has really lost its luster over the past few decades.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:13 PM
You mean the area of the country that is home to the last four BCS champions? I think you’d have a hard time arguing that SEC football doesn’t warrant the coverage it receives.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:13 PM
Doug Lesmerises from cleveland PD has Michigan the 9th best team…but he has an admitted unorthodox way that he does his rankings
September 13th, 2010 at 3:14 PM
LOL at Ohio State falling a spot this week. Who did he have passing them?
September 13th, 2010 at 3:15 PM
Blogs to answer your question.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:15 PM
In what other genre of “journalism” would that be acceptable?
Umm, you don’t watch the news a lot, do you?
September 13th, 2010 at 3:15 PM
It’s a strange ballot to be sure. Horns certainly haven’t looked like a top 5 team even. Would most people put the Big 10 as the second best conference thus far?
September 13th, 2010 at 3:17 PM
Not without Tebow. Pryor and Robinson are the new hot beats to follow until some SEC player starts saving souls and snipping peens.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:18 PM

September 13th, 2010 at 3:18 PM
Thanks for the link, coop – I was actually surprised he had the restraint to leave Stanford all the way down at #14. Thought for sure he’d have them in the Top 5
September 13th, 2010 at 3:18 PM
yea, he watches the games and ranks according to merit. it’s shocking, i know.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:19 PM
Stop it. Just stop. You’re not doing yourself any favors.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:20 PM
Big XII has the best winning percentage against non-conference opponents this season.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:20 PM
Even Juice Williams thinks Jordan Jefferson is awful.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:20 PM
werent you just saying UM didnt deserve the 22nd spot?
September 13th, 2010 at 3:21 PM
yea, he watches the games and ranks according to merit. it’s shocking, i know.
What? There is no way you can convince me he watches every game. or that Michigan is #9, for that matter. Of course, wtf do I know, I thought Jacory Harris was a good QB and Mark Whipple was a great playcaller as recently as 12:30pm PDT on Saturday
September 13th, 2010 at 3:21 PM
It was highly troubling, their whole offensive ineptitude was…I mean it was fucking San Jose State, does Arizona State still kinda blow? If not they’re liable to lose a game before conference play
September 13th, 2010 at 3:22 PM
Why did the number of voters go from 59 in week 1 to 58 in week 2? Did a writer die?
September 13th, 2010 at 3:22 PM
You know I’m right. No matter how stupid it is, that’s the types of things that get coverage. Your editor wrote an entire post on it last week except it was in regards to the NFL.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:23 PM
yea, but im not a voter so i can be as biased as i want to.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:23 PM
I just looked a little closer. This guy is amazing for ranking Free Shoes at #19 and Fresno State at #24. So lazy
September 13th, 2010 at 3:24 PM
why is this worth a post? because of the amount of Big Ten football fans that comment here?
September 13th, 2010 at 3:25 PM
probably because it’s a sports media blog and this guy is a shitty sports media-ist.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:25 PM
This dude probably kidnapped himself, man! Probably has debts all over the Pac 10.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:25 PM
if you were a voter, where would you wank them
also, i wasnt criticizing dougs methodology, knowing how he does his ranking i figured UM would be way up there
September 13th, 2010 at 3:25 PM
why is this worth a post? because of the amount of Big Ten football fans that comment here?
Because we will not be stopped until everyone acknowledges that Big Ten football is the best! No matter what the empirical data may be!

Texas 0-2 ATS
/all that matters
September 13th, 2010 at 3:28 PM
Your contention is that the SEC gets too much ink. Which is a fucking stupid stance to take. You know why they get so much coverage? They’re good. Better than every other conference. You might not like it, but that’s the way it is.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:28 PM
Randy Rosetta didn’t turn in a ballot. Baton Rouge paper.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:28 PM
haha well played
September 13th, 2010 at 3:28 PM
fowler was on the shitter all weekend from his taco bell run. didnt hand in his ballot on time
September 13th, 2010 at 3:28 PM
I would agree with this if TBL, himself wrote it.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:29 PM
i dont think any big 10 fans would even agree with that
September 13th, 2010 at 3:29 PM
Randy Rosetta didn’t turn in a ballot. Baton Rouge paper.
Probably wanted to avoid not having LSU jump up and the threats that would have followed!
September 13th, 2010 at 3:30 PM
Happens here all the time when you write about UK and Calipari, unless, of course, you have him coaching LeBron.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:31 PM
Why don’t we talk about Joe Giglio? Miami above Ohio State, Pitt #4, only person to have Temple and SMU in the rankings.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:31 PM
Fowler received my “good vote” on the website coop linked to up top.
Liked his style.

Steve Spurrier left Tebow off his All-SEC team.
Ole Miss’ mascot is racist.
ZOMG URBAN MEYER RETIRED! Wait, no he didn’t.
Tim Tebow saves souls and is an overall good human being.
Tennessee, Lane Kiffin and the great recruitment of one Bryce Brown.
Tennessee, Lane Kiffin and the great dirty recruitment of every other player on their watch list.
Lane Kiffin left Tennessee high and dry.
Les Miles can’t manage a clock, has suspended or booted how QB X.
UGA’s AD got caught with red panties in his mouth, those not of his wife.
Mark Richt is on the hot seat… again.
Clemson… yeah, I can’t think of one here.
Vanderbilt… see above.
What’s a Mississippi State?
These are the types of stories we read about the SEC in the last 18 months. Nick Saban is the only guy in that conference that seems interested in talking about football.
This can be applied to every other conference but it’s like with the SEC we just get them ten-fold. Ink the best conference in America, but tell me why they’re the best instead of all this other minutia.

30,40, and 50 are acceptable if someone else throws it for you.
Birthday weeks for women are jut ridiculous and uncalled for.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:36 PM
A fucking lot. Draper said it best a week and change ago to Peggy:
“You are 20….something years old, it’s time to get over birthdays!”

September 13th, 2010 at 3:37 PM
they have the most crystal footballs by a large, LARGE margin.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:37 PM
Why do people over 30 have “birthday parties”?
Another excuse to get drunk and hit on moms?
September 13th, 2010 at 3:38 PM
Something we see on message boards, comment sections and other fan outlets. We get the things I listed above in the actual blogs posts or newspaper articles.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:39 PM
im about over facebook
September 13th, 2010 at 3:40 PM
im failing to see your point.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:40 PM
@Spencer: Actually, it was a commenter who suggested it was you in the pic, not the caption. Nonetheless, previous caption has been added.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:40 PM
That’s why I posted that! Get started!
September 13th, 2010 at 3:41 PM
Mark Richt isn’t on the hot seat, and the only people that think he is are TBL and a couple of national writers. Clemson’s not in the SEC. Vandy and Miss. St. don’t get ink. Everything else you mentioned is a legitimate story, aside from the Tebow human interest thing, which I’m sure we’ll get on some other player from somewhere at some point this season.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:41 PM
Interesting gambling tip from Mike Lombardi:

September 13th, 2010 at 3:44 PM
a typo.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:45 PM
Ass-Sphincter says what?
September 13th, 2010 at 3:45 PM
Let me get this straight…your complaining about a guy allowing his biases to impact the way he votes in an opinion poll. Am I reading this right? Isn’t that the whole idea of an opinion poll?
September 13th, 2010 at 3:45 PM
I’m saying that I’d like to read about what happened in a game that I didn’t watch because I was watching my own conference or their next opponent. They’ve won the last 4 titles… Credit due.
But every time I open a browser, crack a newspaper or get an e-mail, it’s about Urban Meyer yelling at some media-ite that ‘twisted’ the words of one of his players. The scope over coverage is certainly greater for them and they’ve earned it. Use that scope to provide me with useful knowledge, not copious amounts of non-football stories.
/end rant
Now how did we get here from polls?
September 13th, 2010 at 3:45 PM
I think milestone birthdays are ok to celebrate with a party (21, 30, 40, 50, etc)
September 13th, 2010 at 3:45 PM
Ya butthole, and other muscles that hold up ya body holes.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:45 PM
Why don’t we talk about Joe Giglio? Miami above Ohio State, Pitt #4, only person to have Temple and SMU in the rankings
28-7 win over UAB. We earned that one vote assholes.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:47 PM
how about Clemson, not in the SEC?
September 13th, 2010 at 3:48 PM
scope of* coverage…
I hope no one does this for 30, 40, 50 and beyond for me. Birthdays are like New Year’s Eve to me anymore. Non-celebratory occasions.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:49 PM
It’s SC, you couldn’t possibly think he’d get all the SEC schools right…he probably can’t even the Big Ten correct without checking his answers.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:49 PM
informed opinion. People go against the norm and reach incredible conclusions all the time. How they reach said conclusions is what Duffy takes issue with. Would be nice to see some explanation from pollsters on why they ranked teams where they did, but that would require readers to actually read what they think. The average college football wants a simple number they can be outraged or satisfied with.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:49 PM
@SC- no New Years eve party for you? i bet that awesome roommate of yours does
September 13th, 2010 at 3:50 PM
You really think someone would throw a birthday party for you? You’re a dude.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:50 PM
Yes… aware. Should have used Kentucky instead seeing as even Clemson is more needle moving than the Wildcats.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:51 PM
My birthday is New Year’s Day and I would MUCH rather celebrate NYE.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:51 PM
DEBATABLE.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:52 PM
Grow some stones or buy a TV so you can actually watch football. And go talk to that girl that moved in across the hall. While you’re at it, provide some humor or something worthwhile to the comment section every once in a while.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:52 PM
I think I hate Halloween more than NYE.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:52 PM
Respectfully disagree. 21 and 40 are the only acceptable ones.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:52 PM
My birthday is New Year’s Day and I would MUCH rather celebrate NYE.
Ditto.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:53 PM
@Irish – Haven’t seen him in two weeks. He’s slipping, too. Didn’t even watch the FIBA final yesterday. His girl con’d him into seeing that awful new Drew Barrymore movie. We’re planning the intervention for mid-October.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:54 PM
Own a tv, no go on the girl…you stalking me?
September 13th, 2010 at 3:55 PM
Like you?
September 13th, 2010 at 3:55 PM
no way. NYE fucking blows. Halloween is fun to go out and, um, people watch.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:56 PM
I know, just busting your balls a little. Should have used Arkansas since they are going to be beating people off the bandwagon here in a couple weeks.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:56 PM
oh no…halloween >>> NYE for a variety of reasons
September 13th, 2010 at 3:56 PM
You’re all a bunch of Scrooges!
/I agree
Is Mike Gundy solely responsible for the latter? I wouldn’t mind having an occasion dedicated to shouting “I’m a man! I’m 40!!” at people for 4 hours.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:57 PM
I cannot get behind you on this. I will celebrate Halloween until I am a.) married or B.) hot girls stop dressing like sluts when I go out. Whichever comes first. And even then, I will be reluctant.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:57 PM
I hope this is still memorable when I hit 40, cause I’m saying it all day
September 13th, 2010 at 3:58 PM
I will celebrate Halloween until I am a.) married
Jersey’s consideration for his children is touching.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:58 PM
yes, I realize all the pervy guys LOVE Halloween for the skanky outfits but douche bags outnumber cockroaches on that “holiday.”
September 13th, 2010 at 3:58 PM
Two NYE birthdays? That’s an interesting date.
Being born on Christmas has to be the worst holiday to be born on, especially when you’re a kid. Sept 11th probably running a close 2nd for the modern generation.
September 13th, 2010 at 3:59 PM
I did a little dance at 25 when my car insurance rates went down…that’s an underrated birthday from a fiscal sense

Shouldn’t have taken 15 comments for a Party of Five reference. Thanks Duder!
And don’t know why people are blasting Wisky in here. They will be able to run on anyone this year (I’m nervous).
September 13th, 2010 at 4:00 PM
I cannot deny this. I cannot deny this one bit.
September 13th, 2010 at 4:00 PM
good point, gal. It’s fun to make fun of the bros and brahs though.
September 13th, 2010 at 4:00 PM

Lol. You know what I mean. No more going out and crinding on slutty bumble bees and slutty raggedy anns, and slutty cops. Just trick or treating and watching Charlie Brown movies. Oy vey.

Curious how long this will last… from MMQB
September 13th, 2010 at 4:05 PM
Did you watch the UNLV opener game? That was complete and utter Wisko dominance. I think they gave up like 12 yards in the first half.
September 13th, 2010 at 4:06 PM
UNLV, brah.

lets hope this was Dick Clarks last year on the NYE show
yea…hopefully he dies soon.
It has been years since the groovy moves of America’s youth ceased arresting his aging process.
September 13th, 2010 at 4:07 PM
I did (I’m a fan of the team), the scary part about that first half was that they were only up 17-14 at the end of it…the offense has been turning the ball over time and again and the running game is too plodding even for them, hopefully that White can provide a burst but otherwise there’s not a lot of explosiveness amongst the backs
September 13th, 2010 at 4:07 PM
Spence are you less worried about Wisconsin? I think they very well could keep us from the title game.
September 13th, 2010 at 4:08 PM
Oh Butter, you’re a Badger fan? didn’t know.
September 13th, 2010 at 4:08 PM

When you get to 40, you won’t want a party. It’s just much better to let it go and hope everyone forgets.

to Hell with Millen and Williams. Nice of you to want to play now, Mike.

im more worried about wisky than any other team on the buckeye’s schedule just not because they dominated UNLV.

YouTube? Team sites? Shutdown Corner? ESPN team pages? There’s gotta be quite a few I’d imagine since the NFL isn’t all media nazi with their digital media.

SC have you been to the Whole Foods off North Avenue? That place is like Disney World for adults.
September 13th, 2010 at 4:11 PM
Nice win last weekend, SC. And, yes, Wisky is the game that scares me.
/Don’t shart this time, SC.

Not a huge Whole Foods fan but do tell… I always love a new grocery adventure.
Treasure Island has recently garnered my attention since my Trader Joe’s is being renovated.

Youtube has single plays, I’m looking for comprehensive game summaries. Team sites link to NFL.com stuff. ESPN is all talking heads and fantasy shit. Shutdown Corner links to NFL.com. I might just have to shell out $50 to get all the games after the fact.

You won’t go here for grocery shopping. You’ll go there to get drunk off $5 local microbrew beers and $2 Bells bottles. The bar is huge, has TVs, a lounge couch seating area and amazing beers on tap. And they switch the beers out every few days. The bartenders don’t accept tips!!! Plus they have about 15 different places where you can get food and sit down to eat. It’s AMAZING.

Used to be that on the team sites they’d have highlight packages with the team’s radio announcer calls but all I found on Packers.com today was NFLN highlights…hearing Deion shout “DO WHAT YOU DO MIKE VICK!” on every run got real fucking annoying

I’ll have to check it out. Probably met more women at the grocery store than at the bar in the recent past anyways.

I know. It’s so much better that SIDs who didn’t watch a single play of any game outside of their own vote.
/both polls are ridiculous

Just read the comment section. SC, you need to stop talking about the SEC and its coverage. You sound dumber than you usually do. Just sit back and know that B10 is on an upswing and the SEC is sliding a bit (though SC, Auburn and UGA will be pretty good next year and Fla and Bama will be as well).
September 13th, 2010 at 4:43 PM
Too late to read the comments, but you could pick any conference in D-1 and scour the AP voters until you found somebody supposedly biased against said conference.

This.

ritty, gameday at the Auburn-Clemson game this weekend. not sure why, but should be fun.
September 13th, 2010 at 4:49 PM
I’m sure if UNC and GT hadn’t shit the bed already this season that game would have been more appealing but alas…Iowa and Arizona is the only matchup of ranked teams but otherwise not a whole lot of good going on next Saturday
September 13th, 2010 at 4:50 PM
I will be Auburn’s biggest fan when SCAR plays them in a week or so. Need SCAR to lose every game they play in the conference now…dammit.
September 13th, 2010 at 4:51 PM
That game is No. 2 on my list (if I were being unbiased, I’d have it at No. 1) but Nebraska playing on TV against Washington and the greatest QB of all time tops my list. I haven’t been able to watch Nebraska play yet this year.
September 13th, 2010 at 4:54 PM
yeah, I hadn’t looked at the whole slate, but figured it was pretty weak. Arkansas-UGA would have been good except for jersey-sale 2010 kind of ruining it. plus they wouldn’t want the Hogs 2 weeks in a row since they are coming to Fayetteville the following week for Arkansas-Bama…
yeah Gods, I am higher on SCar now than I was earlier in the summer, but I still have confidence in Garcia’s bed-shitting ability for a least a couple games this year. Teams are going to need to stack the front to stop Lattimer and make Garcia throw it.

+1 espy
September 13th, 2010 at 4:57 PM
They should come to Madison just for shits and grins, Badgers playing a PAC-10 team (albeit a crappy one in Arizona State) on ABC…at least it would give Fowler a reason to get hammered Friday night
September 13th, 2010 at 5:03 PM
I won’t disagree, but this guy is a little more than a supposedly biased.
If a team is 6th in your rankings, and beats your 8th ranked team, then said team shouldn’t go down in your own mind. That 8th best team is still 13th in his poll.
The fact that he drubs OSU, Iowa, and Wisky in his poll is definitely biased, not slightly.
It doesn’t matter since the AP doesn’t count in the ratings, but he made his poll public, so he should get called to the carpet for reasoning.
