Kentucky Recruit Enes Kanter is the Latest John Calipari Recruit Engulfed in Drama
Enes Kanter, a consensus Top 5 high school basketball recruit who played professional in Turkey the last few years and was expected to step in and start for Kentucky this year, may be getting a call from the NCAA this week. According to his pro team’s general manager, Kanter received more than $100,000 in cash and benefits over the last three years, reports Pete Thamel of the New York Times. Kanter, a 6-foot-11, 270-pound power forward, has long portrayed his Turkish experience akin to a prep school one in the United States. In April, Kentucky coach John Calipari said, “there was no money, from what we’re seeing, what the kid is saying and the family, and what Nike is saying.”
Karakas said that Fenerbahce provided housing to Kanter and his family for more than three years, provided them with food and pocket money and paid Kanter a salary of more than $6,500 a month during his final season.
After the story went online last night, Kentucky fans moved quickly to hammer and dispute Thamel’s report, and the Kentucky media is saying this isn’t a John Calipari scandal (it’s not – yet, at least). According to one report, the NCAA isn’t expected to weigh in for about two weeks. But it sure is odd that there often seems to be some kind of drama surrounding high-profile John Calipari recruits. But there’s a reason why you don’t find this kind of drama around Roy Williams’ recruits or Coach K recruits. As we said when the Eric Bledsoe story broke … eventually, Calipari’s going to slip up (that is not to say he’s to blame for any of the Kanter mess). With his luck, he’ll already be back in the NBA. Teflon John at it again.
September 8th, 2010 at 12:22 PM
is this really that scandalous? i mean, it’s not like he’s some AAU kid getting paid, he was playing in a pro league, right?
September 8th, 2010 at 12:23 PM
So he’s taking a paycut to come to UK?
September 8th, 2010 at 12:24 PM
Shouldn’t the fact that he played pro basketball automatically disqualify him from playing college basketbball? Or maybe a rule like that makes to much sense for the NCAA.
September 8th, 2010 at 12:24 PM
Irish really likes this guy if I remember correctly…Kanter that is
September 8th, 2010 at 12:25 PM
You are allowed to play professionally if you are an international kid as long as you are only compensated for reasonable travel and living expenses. These allegations would obviously make him ineligible if true. Like spencer said it is not that scandalous it just means he might not be able to play CBB.

I don’t get it either – he was playing professionally, doesn’t that usually mean you get paid? Also, if he was playing professionally how is he eligible to play NCAA?
September 8th, 2010 at 12:26 PM
Was Calipari actually using Nike as a source of truth on this? Fascinating.

Someone wake up GSG so he can tell us how Lexington is losing their minds
September 8th, 2010 at 12:28 PM
Thanks Cleet.
I know from experience that a kid playing major junior hockey making $100 every 2 weeks in ineligible to play NCAA. Found it odd that a kid coming from a pro league in Europe would be eligible.

David Stern, June-ish, 2011
“And with the 4th pick in the 2011 NBA draft, the Toronto Raptors select Enes Kanter, the kid who was supposed to dominate at Kentucky, but never made it there because he got paid in Turkey.”

Not if the Knicks trade up to get him after Carmelo doesn’t…

wow, nothing cool at all about that. let’s all hope that sportsgal doesn’t see that link.
September 8th, 2010 at 12:32 PM
He never actually signed a contract with the team.

Everytime I hear the name John Calipari, I feel I need to shower. The man is a recruiting scum bag.

He never actually signed a contract with the team.
Hope he had solid insurance coverage.

Pete Thamel is the man (Syracuse Grad!) Not good if he comes a digging, (brought down not only the basketball program at Binghamton, but they’re debating making he entire athletics department D-2). Great get by him in Istanbul. Funny to see Kentucky Sports Radio jackass go after Thamel – who’s got more credibility than almost anyone covering sports right now.

Well, I learned something today. When you have partners for a group project, don’t try to find them on Facebook. What a cluster fuck.

shit, you got me there.
September 8th, 2010 at 12:44 PM
The guy is a projected top 3 draft pick, but had only a couple of offers. Calipari just thought he was better at evaluating talent than the rest of the coaches? Gosh, I can’t believe these other coaches don’t want a double-double machine, it must be my lucky day.
September 8th, 2010 at 12:44 PM
Miz got pwned!
September 8th, 2010 at 12:44 PM
Sunnysideup, maybe you can just not post those links? Everyone knows there are assholes who do terrible shit to animals, and everyone knows PETA has a website where you can find out about it.

Is Kentucky considered a top 10 team next season? I haven’t done a stitch of reading on college basketball this offseason. Usually grabs my interest around January.
OT: If you walked into your employee bathroom and there was a small container of Vaseline in one of the stalls, would that be cause for alarm? I mean, it’s only one of two things. Either someone was being considerate of the rest of the staff having some chaffage issues or there’s a little self-amusement going on, no?

Still waiting on that evidence about Eric Bledsoe he hinted about.
As for Matt Jones, you’re right about that. He’s a cheerleading tool and his site actually got called out the by the Lexington media. That shit about Rodney Crawford comes across as misdirection.
And honestly, did anyone expect a guy who played in Turkish professional leagues to be eligible? I mean, Calipari not included, because, clearly, he’s going to try to do whatever he can to get Kanter on the roster.
September 8th, 2010 at 12:54 PM
this and that.
September 8th, 2010 at 12:54 PM
I’d rather get paid in Lunchables.

the kid who was supposed to dominate at Kentucky, but never made it there because…
Hey, the Shawn Kemp story!
September 8th, 2010 at 12:55 PM
With or without Kanter, it’s hard to say. UK has absolutely no guard depth to speak of and will be starting two freshman guards. That usually doesn’t bode well for a college basketball team.
September 8th, 2010 at 12:56 PM
I’d rather get paid in Lunchables.
What do NBDL players get for lunch?

But, but, how can this be?! KySportsRadio had the best coverage of the Pitino sex trial, so you know he’s legit.

Does Nike actually run college athletics? I read another post here where Bobby Bowden said he was “Just doing what Nike told me to do.” when they wore the black colors for an FSU game.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:05 PM
At Oregon – definitely. Phil Knight might as well be the AD.

Kentucky isn’t a top ten team right now, without Kanter. Kanter was the prize piece in the class.
Also, those “I GuEsS hE t0k a PaY cUt!!!11!31@ lolz!” jokes never get old. Be original.
