Former UNC Coach John Blake Had Frequent Telephone Contact With Agent
Unless the two were dating, former UNC defensive line coach John Blake’s telephone records indicate a potentially inappropriate relationship with player agent Gary Wichard that bodes poorly for the university’s NCAA investigation. The log on Blake’s university-paid cell phone shows the two exchanged 152 texts and phone calls during a 235-day period. The longest silence was four days. Most crucially, there were 61 communications in the 61 days leading up to Jan. 4, the date six draft-eligible Tar Heels decided to stay for their senior season.
Blake does have “a personal relationship” with Wichard. He had been an employee of Wichard’s company “Pro Tect Management” in between coaching stints. The NCAA has no rules against contact between coaches and agents, unless it involves payment. If it did, Blake could face prosecution under North Carolina’s Uniform Athlete Agent Act. Wichard is the agent for 13 NFL players coached by Blake in college.
The questions for North Carolina are whether Blake (and the program) knew about a possibly improper trip Marvin Austin and Cam Thomas made before the 2009 season (Wichard did) and whether the school acted appropriately to ensure Blake’s previous relationship with Wichard would not be an issue. Culpability could lead to UNC vacating the 2009 season and facing further sanctions.
Blake’s phone calls could also be a mere iceburg tip into a broader scandal. Blake is known as “a fixer,” hired by schools to boost their recruiting. He brought in a big class for Nebraska in 2005. He recruited a large part of Bob Stoops’ national title team at Oklahoma. Perhaps, he’s just really charming?
It’s hard to see Butch Davis surviving this.

My wish for EA Sports NCAA 12 is they have an enhancement where coaches have to fend off agents.
September 8th, 2010 at 5:10 PM
Am I duckworthing that AJ Green is out the next 3 games?
September 8th, 2010 at 5:10 PM
This never gets old.

No sympathy for stupidity. Think at least half a step ahead if you’re going to cheat.

“It’s real to me dammit.”

and Stossel turned that segment into the biggest turning point in his career. knocked some sense into him.

I am not connecting these dots quick enough…a little help?

Woohoo, Saturday and Johnson might be ready for Sunday!
September 8th, 2010 at 5:19 PM
I feel like I’m not sufficiently /jarring’d by these revelations. It seems like it’s in the agents best interests to have the guys come out, isn’t it?
September 8th, 2010 at 5:19 PM
it really doesn’t. that’s an open hand slap.

Mistake.TH2,wrong. TE2 [the expendables 2] right. Apollo punch me so hard he rattled my inner alphabet for eternity. Perfection is boring.
September 8th, 2010 at 5:22 PM
I guess the implication is that the guys decided to come back to school, but agreed to sign with the agent after graduating. Even still, that’s a stretch and a half, and you’d have to infer even more for it to be improper.

Hey, lefty, I saw your comment about the pain that is going to FedEx field brought to you by Jack Kent Cooke’s terrible idea and presented by Dan Snyder’s ego. Are you with me that the stadium is, besides being on the wrong side of the city (put a stadium on the VA side if you’re throwing it out to the sticks) that it’s an incredibly lifeless place? I really hate that stadium
September 8th, 2010 at 5:26 PM
Coincidentally, John Stossel could’ve been one of the greatest sniveling, annoying wrestling heels in history.
September 8th, 2010 at 5:26 PM
Whatever happened to recruiting and keeping kids in school with the promises of this?
September 8th, 2010 at 5:28 PM
When a team “vacates” a season does that mean they have to pay back the money they got for being in a bowl game?
September 8th, 2010 at 5:29 PM
@s1rweeze, re: your comment about Simmons exaggerating about 25K Cowboys @ FedEx this weekend. Unfortunately, he’s pretty accurate with that number. I fear there could be more.
September 8th, 2010 at 5:29 PM
Monday was the first time I’d ever been there, and that joint was rockin’ Monday night. It seemed pretty nice, but it’s in the middle of freakin nowhere, and it’s a pain in the ass to even take Metro out there. Couldn’t put that thing in Arlington County?
September 8th, 2010 at 5:30 PM
It’s horrible. Although coming down from Philly, it’s very easy for me to get to, the locale still sucks. And it is sterile as sterile can be.
September 8th, 2010 at 5:31 PM
Not sure where there’s space in Arlington but there is/was plenty of nowhere in Fairfax they could’ve filled up
September 8th, 2010 at 5:35 PM
25 THOUSAND seems like a hell of a lot. But then that place can hold like 80K can’t it?
September 8th, 2010 at 5:39 PM
Don’t the Packers usually have about 10-15K at the Metrodome? Doesn’t seem that unlikely for Washington to have 25K cowboy fans in a bigger stadium

Ha, Cory Booker is the man:
“Snooki! I’m the mayor where R U so I can give u a ticket 4 texting & driving we needs revenue! RT @Sn00ki Ugh stuck in Nwk traffic is no fun”
September 8th, 2010 at 5:48 PM
Holy shit, Tony Ugoh just got waived. Damn, that was an awesome first-round pick they used!
September 8th, 2010 at 5:50 PM
sanders: Cory Booker is on twitter? How am I the last to know this?
September 8th, 2010 at 5:50 PM
You didn’t know that Jersey? He’s a pretty good follow. It’s mostly quotes and, “Hey, it’s 4:30 and I’m awake and fucking awesome and pumped up on caffeine!”
September 8th, 2010 at 5:50 PM
I don’t know what happened to that dude, he was a stud when he was at Arkansas.
September 8th, 2010 at 5:52 PM
He was a shitty offensive lineman. Can’t believe he was a first round pick, cost the Colts a damn super bowl.
/Polian’d
September 8th, 2010 at 5:53 PM
Awesome. He is definitely one of my idols in life.
September 8th, 2010 at 5:54 PM
Sanders – I see that he was waived-injured. What is wrong with him – other than the apparent lack of talent.
September 8th, 2010 at 5:55 PM
Not really, but he did cost them the 2007 playoff game against the Chargers.
Actually had/has a lot of talent, apparently he doesn’t have it mentally. Sucks.
September 8th, 2010 at 5:57 PM

Shit, having talent but not caring is much worse than just not being talented enough.
September 8th, 2010 at 5:57 PM
I mean, how many city mayors are tweeting Snooki? Or following her for that matter? If Booker had been the mayor on The Wire they wouldn’t have had any of those problems.
September 8th, 2010 at 5:57 PM
Forgot that injury reports got posted today.
September 8th, 2010 at 5:58 PM
I think Chris Fowler is out of the atmosphere he’s so far up on his high horse
September 8th, 2010 at 6:01 PM
has anyone here taken the GMAT? If so, how long would you recommend studying for prior to taking it?
September 8th, 2010 at 6:02 PM
Pioneer Press said about 8K last year. No link to back that up though.
Who picks him up first? Bears or Packers?
September 8th, 2010 at 6:04 PM
Naw man. Marlow is still packin bodies in them rowhouses. Wasn’t nobody avoiding that shit. Fuck Herc.
September 8th, 2010 at 6:06 PM
As I mentioned above, he was waived-injured, so guessing he isn’t able to play right away (at least there is some forewarning that he isn’t 100%).
September 8th, 2010 at 6:06 PM
I got a buddy who has been studying for a month or two in his spare time. Taking classes to improve. I think the test is next month.

mmonast: are you going into accounting? If so, buying yourself a gun or a nice rope would probably be much cheaper
September 8th, 2010 at 6:15 PM
Ha. I don’t know what the stigma attached to accountants is all about.

mmonast: are you going into accounting? If so, buying yourself a gun or a nice rope would probably be much cheaper
Depends on what you get into. I am a CA (CPA in the US). When I was an auditor I wanted to end my life most days. If you can find something in industry with a good company life isn’t so bad.
September 8th, 2010 at 6:19 PM
Tony Ugoh just got waived
i’m laughing about this. A whole lot. And I want Dallas to sign him to play backup guard/tackle.
September 8th, 2010 at 6:19 PM
I had to make the tough decision in college of which road I wanted to go down: Accounting or Finance. I picked the latter, mainly because I wanted to avoid being an auditor as much as possible.
September 8th, 2010 at 6:20 PM
haha no, not accounting…i haven’t put a lot of thought into it yet but im leaning towards management or general MBA.
September 8th, 2010 at 6:21 PM
Both my parents are accountants and my sister was going down that path until she got an internship auditing for a summer. Now she’s in law school.
September 8th, 2010 at 6:22 PM
I’m taking an advanced accounting course this semester…the gun ‘n rope idea doesn’t sound so bad right about now
September 8th, 2010 at 6:24 PM

You made the right decision there Jersey. I worked for Ernst & Young for quite a while and was not a happy fella. Glad I moved into industry, less hours, way less stress, better money.

My friend works for E&Y in Philly. Very smart girl, picked up her masters right out of Va Tech. Works as many hours as I do and is on the wrong side of happiness. She wants to quit and open a bakery. I don’t blame her.

When I was there it was routinely 80+ hour weeks for a shitty salary, no OT and no other perks. You can tell her it is much better on the industry side of life if she waits until she makes manager level before she leaves.
September 8th, 2010 at 6:33 PM
Geezeus: I’ve told her. Get that CPA (she is taking it soon or might have already) toil, and then look for offers. Public accounting is just the time you have to serve before becoming a baller.
September 8th, 2010 at 6:37 PM
Perfect strategy – I was there so they could pay for my CA. Stayed a year after I passed the exam to make manager and caught on with a mid-size private company. The day she leaves will be the best day of her professional life.
September 8th, 2010 at 9:33 PM
Oh, please, bitch. How long did Pete Carroll survive the Bush investigation? Long enough to land a sweet gig in Seattle. Davis survives this dust up long enough for some punk NFL team call.
