2010 NFL Predictions: AFC
Yesterday we did the NFC. The AFC appears to be a much easier conference to project. You really only have have nine teams in the mix for six spots. Unless of course you think highly of the AFC West or the Tennessee Titans. And three of those nine teams are flawed – the Texans have been on the cusp of a breakthrough for a couple years now but find a way to miss the postseason; the Steelers will be without their QB for four games, and the Jets enter the season with high expectations but will have to contend with chemistry issues and a sophomore QB.
What you can expect tomorrow on the NFL – the annual ‘Pick a Super Bowl champ’ post, a preview of the Jets, and (hopefully) a comprehensive preview on who the media is picking to win the Super Bowl.
How we see the AFC shaking out:
AFC East: New England, NY Jets*, Miami*, Buffalo
AFC North: Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Cleveland
AFC South: Indianapolis, Houston, Tennessee, Jacksonville
AFC West: San Diego, Kansas City, Denver, Oakland
* Yes, we had the Jets at 7-9 last week. Then Revis signed, and now it smells like 9/10 wins. More tomorrow.
* Peter King has the Steelers winning the Super Bowl, and we have them missing the playoffs. The good news: Four of their last seven are against Oakland, Buffalo, Carolina and Cleveland. Think the Steelers can get to eight wins, but they’ll need 10 to get in the playoffs.
* Our sleeper in the West is the Chiefs. There should be a significant improvement for Cassel in year two, the Charles-Thomas Jones combo is a nice one, and the young and talented defense should gain confidence in weeks 7-13 when the schedule is littered with bad or mediocre teams. Eight wins would not surprise us.
* If we had to project a division champ to slump, it’d be San Diego, which features a rookie RB (Mathews),is missing its top WR (Jackson), best corner from last year (Cromartie, though his replacement, Antonie Cason, is very good) and just feels like a team that has had the window open forever (playoffs five of the last six years, always flops in the postseason) and it is beginning to close.
In the playoffs we’ll give Indianapolis and Baltimore byes, the Jets will beat the Chargers (again), and the Dolphins will lose to the Patriots. We’ll take Baltimore over the Jets and Colts over the Patriots … and put the Ravens in the Super Bowl. Actually, we like the Ravens to win the Super Bowl.

Your music adviser is going to have a complete and total meltdown.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:04 PM
Wow, you mean a Jets fan remembers they went 9-7 last year, not 15-1?
The Chiefs are going nowhere with Todd “Spaz” Haley. And the Ravens aren’t coming anywhere near the Super Bowl with that secondary.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:04 PM
Also, it warrants mentioning again: Raiders = playoffs
September 8th, 2010 at 1:05 PM
Any of the football gurus want to give a breakdown of the Chiefs offensive line? I’m curious because along with TBL’s sleeper pick, I’m depending on Jamaal Charles to be somewhat good. I couldn’t name a single one of them because Willie Roaf doesn’t play anymore and could be dead for all I know.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:05 PM
Oh man, stop. You’re killing me.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:06 PM
AFC East: New England, Miami*, NY Jets, Buffalo
AFC North: Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Cleveland
AFC South: Indianapolis, Tennessee, Houston, Jacksonville
AFC West: San Diego, Oakland*, Denver, KC
Indy and San Diego in the AFC title game
September 8th, 2010 at 1:06 PM
Our sleeper in the West is the Chiefs.
you are really, really bad at this.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:07 PM
LOL. I’m guessing a whole lot of research wasn’t done with the AFC North. More of a, “hey, I recognize Pittsburgh as being historically better than the Bengals, so I’ll have them finishing ahead of Cincy.”
September 8th, 2010 at 1:08 PM
Watch out for dem Raaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiders.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:08 PM
AFC East: New England, NY Jets*, Miami*, Buffalo
I don’t think we get three playoff teams out of this division.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:09 PM
a breakdown of the Chiefs offensive line
all I know is that they’re starting Lilja. I couldn’t name another Chiefs lineman at gunpoint. I’d probably just cry and keep trying Will Shields.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:09 PM
A who’s who of nobodys except for Brian Waters who’s good. It’s funny they signed undersized Casey Weigmann when nobody else wanted him, and Denver just released him because he couldn’t match up well enough with the big DTs in their division. Also, Jamal Charles is barely 200 pounds, he’s going to get murdered eventually.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:09 PM
Bengals are too high
September 8th, 2010 at 1:09 PM
Mike Vrabel is a spring chicken!
September 8th, 2010 at 1:10 PM
Wow, Ravens are going to be the Colts for the first time in a decade?
September 8th, 2010 at 1:10 PM
please, you could name branden albert. you’re better than that.
/unfortunately, branden albert isn’t better than that
September 8th, 2010 at 1:10 PM
Playoff teams: MIA, BAL, PIT, IND, TEN, SD with PIT/TEN the wild cards
AFC Sleeper: TEN
AFC Overrated: NE
September 8th, 2010 at 1:10 PM
The Chiefs and Raiders are two teams that could come out of nowhere to win 10 games thanks to schedule and division. Of course, they could also both fall completely flat too.
The Ravens aren’t good enough to win shootouts every week and with that secondary, they may be forced to. Joe ‘Stare at Mason’ Flacco has more weapons, but not sure he’s good enough to use them.
The Bungles may still be decent although I think the Mouth Twins will cause an implosion by week 8.
I like the Colts to the Super Bowl for 1 more go around before age starts to get to them.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:10 PM
Buffalo last place? pft. first the Machine Gun bashing this am and now this
AFC East: New England, Miami WC
AFC North: Baltimore
AFC South: Indianapolis, Tenn WC
AFC West: San Diego
September 8th, 2010 at 1:10 PM
Not bad at run blocking, but not great. Waters is still good but nowhere near what he used to be, that 1st LT is something of a disappointment and they brought in Casey Wiegmann to, I guess, push Rudy Niswanger. If Wiegmann wins that job, yikes.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:10 PM
Give me Pats-Colts or give me Colts-Pats.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:10 PM
so apparently Casey Wiegmann has started 168 career games, and played in nearly 200 in his NFL career at center. He’s also made one pro bowl.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:11 PM
I’m not even close to being sarcastic but I am really surprised, dirt. Normally you’re on point with the OL knowledge. They must really be bad.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:11 PM
Well, 2 out 3 ain’t bad.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:11 PM
The air is thick with unrealistic Jet expectations up here. TBL’s was tame in comparison.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:11 PM
What? Have you ever see him play? He’s TERRIBLE. He’ll be better on the outside because, as his coaches have said, he’s dumb and can’t handle both inside and outside releases. But he’s AWFUL.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:11 PM
Watch out for dem Raaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiders.
Thank you for reminding me that I have 5 months now of putting up with Chris Berman’s NFL schtick.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:11 PM
I predict Buffalo’s offense will gain about 2,500 yards for the year and Big Ben won’t play more than 5 games. I thought Raiders = playoffs until I watched a little bit of their first team offense (admittedly sans Campbell). I’m not sure I’m drinking that Kool-Aid anymore
September 8th, 2010 at 1:11 PM
A lot resting on young Brandon Albert (Rochester!), who’s got to be consistently better in his second year.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:12 PM
Mort picked them to be in the Super Bowl.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:12 PM
When’s the last time a division sent three teams to the playoffs?
Cincy, Baltimore, and Pittsburgh? 2008?
September 8th, 2010 at 1:12 PM
The AFC sucks, as per usual.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:12 PM
So whats TBL’s superbowl pick. Ravens over ?
to lazy to check yesterday
September 8th, 2010 at 1:12 PM
Watch out for dem Raaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiders.
Jason Campbell looks like Jim Plunkett back there
September 8th, 2010 at 1:12 PM
Love hearing guys like Simmons gush about the Bengals “revamped passing game.” Carson Palmer SUCKS, deal with it. He had his one great Neil-Lomax-in-1984 year, and has been injured or just plain bad since.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:12 PM
Also: picking the Raiders to succeed is a losing proposition. Just because they upgraded from “historically awful” to “barely competent” at QB is no reason to hand them a winning record.
To reiterate: fuck the Raiders.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:13 PM
You mean the Bengals team that in the last 2 months of the season was only able to beat KC, DET and CLE?
/realize they beat PIT twice early in the season
September 8th, 2010 at 1:13 PM
Are the Pats really that bad on defense, or was the pre-season just BB not wanting to show anybody anything??
September 8th, 2010 at 1:13 PM
I’m not even close to being sarcastic but I am really surprised, dirt. Normally you’re on point with the OL knowledge. They must really be bad.
I don’t watch those games, or follow that division very closely. If given a choice between watching a Chiefs game (I don’t get very many) and going outside for a few minutes, I’m going to go outside.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:13 PM
I think the NFC East may have in the last 3-4 years. Want to say the Boys, Gigantes and Iggles all made it one year. Could be (probably) wrong.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:13 PM
all yall are sleeping on the browns.
/except for sportsgal
September 8th, 2010 at 1:13 PM
AFC South did in 2007.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:14 PM
browns are too low
September 8th, 2010 at 1:14 PM
Aside from the Colts, nothing in this conference seems predictable.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:14 PM
The Boys, G-Men and Skins all made the playoffs in 2007, also.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:14 PM
Are the Pats really that bad on defense,
league’s youngest secondary – i think 2 rookie corners, already got one D line starter out for the season, and they weren’t very good to start with.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:14 PM
bengals last year were flukes.
they have nice skill position players but both lines are not good. all flash, no substance…much like their terrible uniforms.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:14 PM
Seriously? Of course we’re better than Pittsburgh and I expect to win the division, but that’s more than slightly preposterous.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:14 PM
Quentin Jammer’s always been better than Cromartie, also.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:15 PM
Both.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:15 PM
The preseason is ALWAYS BB not wanting to show anybody anything. However they are relying HEAVILY on rookies and 2nd year players this year, so it should be interesting at least. Anyone who calls this team old can just have a gander at the starting defense this year.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:15 PM
They lost a starting corner already, too.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:15 PM
AFC South did in 2007.
Ahh – the memories, Jags – 31, Steelers – 29.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:15 PM
Shit, what’s the gimme game in Week 1? In an elimination pool and Week 1 looks like dung.
Titans?
September 8th, 2010 at 1:16 PM
Just listened to Cutler’s press conference. Only 3 questions about Cavallari. All were answered with a simple smile.
The rest of the questions did not have nearly as good of answers, sadly. Especially the ones about his potential to throw picks.
/sigh
September 8th, 2010 at 1:16 PM
Uhh, you must not have been aware of the injury situation.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:16 PM
And I’d like to thank the Ravens for signing Houshmanzadeh. Now, all of my hatred can be focused on one location. I can’t stand that prick – he’s the only NFL player I hate more than Ray “jump on the pile” Lewis
September 8th, 2010 at 1:16 PM
CJ…nice jersey.
/snickers
September 8th, 2010 at 1:16 PM
Mooooooort Moooooooooort
/John Clayton last night
September 8th, 2010 at 1:16 PM
And it’s not close. Jammer is a legit player, esp. in run support. Cromartie is good at impregnation.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:16 PM
HEY! I picked them to get to the conference title game, asshole.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:17 PM
it’s all good…they have 3 WR’s who aren’t remotely useful for any route longer than 15 yards and a QB who’s useless for any pass under 15 yards.
it’s a match made in heaven i tell you!
September 8th, 2010 at 1:17 PM
East: Patriots, Jets, Dolphins, Bills
North: Ravens, Bengals, Steelers, Browns
South: Colts, Titans, Texans, Jaguars
West: Chargers, Broncos, Chiefs, Raiders
AFC Champions: Ravens
September 8th, 2010 at 1:17 PM
I like the Chiefs as well…..Except in 2012
September 8th, 2010 at 1:17 PM
Not one writer at SI picked the Eagles to make the playoffs. O fer 9. Interesting.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:17 PM
AFC East: New England, Miami*, NY Jets, Buffalo
AFC North: Pittsburgh, Baltimore*, Cincinnati, Cleveland
AFC South: Indianapolis, Tennessee, Houston, Jacksonville
AFC West: San Diego, Oakland, KC, Denver
Pittsburgh and New England in the AFC title game
I don’t get the Ravens love, especially the part about them being able to beat the Colts all of a sudden despite having a worse secondary this year.
/Goes back and reads the comments
September 8th, 2010 at 1:17 PM
That’s where I went.
Because, as I mentioned, fuck the Raiders.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:17 PM
Fins or Cowboys
September 8th, 2010 at 1:18 PM
Shit, what’s the gimme game in Week 1? In an elimination pool and Week 1 looks like dung.
Titans?
Atlanta
September 8th, 2010 at 1:18 PM
Or, you know, only had one side of the field to throw to, especially later in the season, and a tight end who dropped passes that hit him in the hands and no slot receiver, especially after Henry died.
So yeah, I see what you mean about Palmer sucking.
And swept the entire AFC North and improved their team during the offseason. Believe it or not, I actually have legitimate reasons for thinking they’ll be not too bad this season.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:18 PM
That’s not why they’re a good pick, but it doesn’t hurt. Michael Bush is back at practice and might play week 1, he’s awesome. Their D is good, could be very good. Rolando McClain has every opportunity to be awesome playing behind Seymour and Henderson. And they still have that Asomugha guy.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:18 PM
Awesome game. what makes it even awesomer is that the Steelers lost
September 8th, 2010 at 1:18 PM
yes you did and yes im an asshole.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:18 PM
I went with Miami.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:19 PM
Yeah, I still say they win that division by at least 2 games.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:19 PM
AFC Champions: Ravens
those guys really do have secondary problems. They were signing corners other teams cut, and fast.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:19 PM
Keep those blinders on, and keep that excuse-rolodex ready.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:19 PM
I like the Bengals helmets. The unis need work.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:19 PM
Stallworth was their X factor and now he’s on the sidelines. Really makes it easy on defense to be able to put their safeties so close to the line of scrimmage. Any team with fast LB’s and rangy safeties will give them mucho problemos.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:20 PM
Didn’t Cincy go undefeated in the division last year?
September 8th, 2010 at 1:20 PM
I can’t stand that prick – he’s the only NFL player I hate more than Ray “jump on the pile” Lewis
have to love his dance. Ray Murda future Hall of Famer. no dizzy
September 8th, 2010 at 1:20 PM
A cornerback is worth 2 – 3 wins?
September 8th, 2010 at 1:20 PM
I’m going on record with this…
If the Raiders make the playoffs, I will take a cookie sheet to the face. /Leitch’d
If there’s any STL TBL readers (Taguchi I know is out there) who want to be the one to swing said cookie sheet, then fine. Video will be made and sent to TBL.
Now with that out of the way…my picks:
AFC West: Chargers, Broncos, Chiefs, Raiders
AFC North: Ravens, Bengals, Steelers, Browns
AFC South: Colts, Texans*, Titans, Jaguars
AFC East: Patriots, Dolphins*, Jets, Buffalo
*-I never learn
September 8th, 2010 at 1:20 PM
You ever see this Tryron (sp) guy from the Skins the Colts got for a bag o donuts? FO says he’s a rising star, but not a good fit for the 3-4. I hope they’re right, as Kelvin Hayden appears to have been abducted by aliens and replaced by Jason David.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:21 PM
Worst unis: Toronto Bills. And it’s not even close.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:21 PM
always remember.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:21 PM
Same here.
In fact, I’m seriously tempted to go with whoever Buffalo or St. Louis is playing each week.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:21 PM
Poor Q. Jammer gets no respect. People see the Int and think Cromartie is a good corner, when in reality he gives up more than he gets. There is a reason SD was so anxious to get rid of him despite having craptastic Cason behind him.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:21 PM
Michael Bush is back at practice and might play week 1, he’s awesome.
How’d I miss that? He’s pretty good but as much of an injury threat as a TD threat. I thought he was gonna miss “significant time”?
September 8th, 2010 at 1:21 PM
Fuck the ravens. Teams that can throw will score a lot of points on that defense since their secondary is fucked.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:21 PM
i agree week one of the survivor league will be very difficult. hate to lean Giants, but that seems like the best bet.
i may go with Saints tomorrow, though
September 8th, 2010 at 1:22 PM
If the Vikings DON’T make the playoffs, I will take a kendo stick to the head. I’ll be doing that to myself all year anyway.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:22 PM
TJ
Woohoo. Serbia beat Spain. Suck it, Rubio.
/TJ
September 8th, 2010 at 1:22 PM
. There should be a significant improvement for Cassel in year two
Chiefs fans around here are wanting Croyle to start. The Chiefs will not be good. Better? Yes.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:22 PM
Stallworth was their X factor
remind me when the last time he didn’t suck or miss a whole season was? Because i think it was the year the Eagles went to the superbowl.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:22 PM
yes it is…the bills’ throwbacks are the best unis in the NFL bar none.
the bengals are the worst by miles. followed closely by seattle.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:22 PM
I’ll save my Super Bowl picks for tomorrow but save to say that I’m going vanilla and taking the Colts to win the AFC. Again.
Please don’t put a bullet in me, Sanders.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:22 PM
This is a whole lot of overstatement. The only player you mentioned who strikes even a tad bit o’ worry into the opposition is Nnamdi, and he’s easy to find, since they just park him at one spot. Michael Bush could be Barry Sanders Extra Large and they are still going to want to chuck the ball down the field to…uh, Louis Murphy? Over and over and over.
Al Davis calls the plays, not the coaches.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:22 PM
I like our QB situation better than yours. If you had watched any games you’d know that Carson does not suck, he’s average at this point. When Chris Henry got injured the vertical threat disappeared, all you had to do was double Ocho and let guys like Laveranues Coles beat you. Shipley, T.O., but especially Gresham are all upgrades.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:23 PM
Thanks SC and Sanders.
Chargers, Raiders
Colts
Pats, Jets
Ravens
Pats over Colts for the AFC
September 8th, 2010 at 1:23 PM
you guys are missing the obvious one…
best week 1 lock? browns over buccos.
any of us could run behind the left side of the browns OL for 200 yards against that DL.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:23 PM
stark – He’s catching passes even. Love me some Michael Bush.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:23 PM
So, when Favre doesn’t have Sidney Rice, that’s a truth, but when someone points out Palmer had no one but Chad and Cedric Benson as weapons, that’s an excuse?
Nice reasoning.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:24 PM
Come on guys, obviously the Ravens cant win the AFC. Or have you forgotten the NFL conspiracy to keep them down?
September 8th, 2010 at 1:24 PM
none are a deep threat.
palmer sucks.
candy corn.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:24 PM
I don’t like how positive TBL is when it comes to the Chiefs, does this mean I can just blame him when it doesn’t come to fruition?
September 8th, 2010 at 1:24 PM
He’s always a roll of the dice, but he changed the complexion of their offense at least. Now they’ve got three dudes running into each other and tripping over Todd Heap and Ray Rice in the same space.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:25 PM
+ 10%
September 8th, 2010 at 1:25 PM
Agree with this, those WRs are all kinds of terrible. Although maybe someone will break out after shaking the stink of JaMarcus off of him.
Agree
September 8th, 2010 at 1:25 PM
Rolando McClain has every opportunity to be awesome playing behind Seymour and Henderson.
Agree with Mr. Portmanteau, specifically with Henderson, he is nearing the end of the line.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:25 PM
The only player you mentioned who strikes even a tad bit o’ worry into the opposition is Nnamdi, and he’s easy to find, since they just park him at one spot.
I read where they’re moving him around this year, so it’s harder not to throw at him.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:25 PM
I always refer to the opposite of a Butter Face as a Bengal. Ugly uniform, nice helmet.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:25 PM
I’m not saying Denver will compete for the Division, but saying that two diarrhea-filled balloons like the Chiefs and the Raiders are going to walk all over them is ruhtarded.
/Yes, I remember the last game of the year
September 8th, 2010 at 1:25 PM
I think that game in Foxboro ends up as the AFC #1 seed decider.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:26 PM
pitt is gonna be in an early hole after dixon leads em to a 1-3 record out of the gate
September 8th, 2010 at 1:26 PM
Got them winning this game in the TBL pick em league
September 8th, 2010 at 1:26 PM
Since when does injury = death?
/Belichick still would have listed him as Questionable.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:26 PM
He also likes the Bears, has no reasoning for either team
And surely Broncos over Jags has to be the Survivor Pick…half that stadium will be cheering for Denver thanks to shots of Tebow on the sideline
September 8th, 2010 at 1:27 PM
But if you double Chad now, one of these guys can beat you.
/T.O.’s kinda a deep threat.
//The Browns are fucking terrible.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:27 PM
That would be smart. Which is why I cannot believe it.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:27 PM
The Raiders D is actually pretty tough but the offense will be bad enough to break them down again. Especially if they have to rely on DMC for any amount of time. The WRs are not even average at this point (though they are all ridiculously fast, so if they “get it” look out)
September 8th, 2010 at 1:27 PM
Whoa, I just got a pop-under.
/site change’d?
September 8th, 2010 at 1:27 PM
Since when does injury = death?
he was injured and out for the year when he died.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:27 PM
We still have yet to find out how Favre will do without Rice – I consider him a luxury, not a necessity. Their passing game will be alright with Harvin as the #1. No excuses there.
QBs I consider good ARE good with one WR and one RB and a decent o-line. Kyle Orton was good last year with one WR and zero RBs.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:28 PM
Chris Henry was out for a couple weeks before he died.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:28 PM
And surely Broncos over Jags has to be the Survivor Pick…half that stadium will be cheering for Denver thanks to shots of Tebow on the sideline
Jags will win this game in the heat.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:28 PM
No kidding. Apparently Revis is somehow going to magically improve Mark Sanchez. That guy sucks.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:28 PM
Michael Bush is back at practice and might play week 1, he’s awesome.
Link??
September 8th, 2010 at 1:29 PM
They just signed Jay Alford so they’ve got the market cornered on broken-down DT’s. Can they get Gerard Warren back, too?
September 8th, 2010 at 1:29 PM
You don’t think he can pull off the Ted Washington/Jerry Ball Memorial “Big Fat Old Guy Who Can’t Move” schtick?
September 8th, 2010 at 1:29 PM
The WRs are not even average at this point
if they complete 10% more of their passes (which is less than the difference between Russell and Campbell) then they can’t be nearly as bad.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:29 PM
Ty_Webb, comment 102 has the link.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:29 PM
yes it is…the bills’ throwbacks are the best unis in the NFL bar none.
the bengals are the worst by miles. followed closely by seattle.
Buffalo’s throwbacks are glorious, but their regular unis are awful. I’ll say the Bengals are the worst, followed by Buffalo (though the helmet is still great), and then Seattle. At least Seattle has been keeping that neon green to a minimum for the most part.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:30 PM
I don’t know how the steelers will end up this year. I can see them either being a 11-5 12-4 team, or a 7-9 8-8 one. If they go 1-3 the first four games I can seem them falling apart because I do not have faith in Tomlin and his motivational skills.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:30 PM
You don’t think he can pull off the Ted Washington/Jerry Ball Memorial “Big Fat Old Guy Who Can’t Move” schtick?
He plays too high now, he gets moved around much too easily for a guy his size. At least he did the last couple years.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:30 PM
You don’t think he can pull off the Ted Washington/Jerry Ball Memorial “Big Fat Old Guy Who Can’t Move” schtick?
Sam Adams and Reuben Brown say you owe then a sandwich and a beer for forgetting about them. And Fat Pat too.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:30 PM
As Bucs fan, I have faith in their rebuilt D line, Price and McCoy has been playing well this off-season plus Bucs offense behind Freeman should be a pleasant surprise.. that game is no where near a lock
September 8th, 2010 at 1:31 PM
Ravens secondary problems are solved week 7
September 8th, 2010 at 1:31 PM
This is true. It’s why the only Bengals Jersey I own is a Boomer Esiason. Went to get a Palmer jersey a few years ago but it was much too ugly to buy
September 8th, 2010 at 1:31 PM
2-2. Beat TB and split Atl/Ten. The Defense is healthy and none of those offenses are great.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:32 PM
That Stroud/Henderson combo was certainly nasty for a while, though.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:32 PM
Apparently people think the Ravens will be the first team to go to the Super Bowl playing with a 7 man defense.
/that secondary fucking blows
//Bengals FTX
///Wholly unbiased
////Fuck Pittsburgh
September 8th, 2010 at 1:32 PM
Deion Sanders is coming back?
September 8th, 2010 at 1:32 PM
*//Bengals FTW, not FTX
September 8th, 2010 at 1:33 PM
That Stroud/Henderson combo was certainly nasty for a while, though.
i’m not here to talk about the past.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:33 PM
You want an offense to be as dynamic and unpredictable as possible, of course*. But I think the level to which the Ravens are somehow screwed by their fleet of possession guys is way too high. O-line is beasty, Rice should make that offense go. He presents problems all over the field.
*and jeez, Stallworth can be part of the offense again by week 2.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:33 PM
two rookies starting on the DL for a team that averaged 175+ rushing yards the final 5 games of the season with no passing threat whatsoever is not a good sign, “good offseason” or not.
they’re rookies brah. thomas, steinbach and mack are going to steamroll those green asses.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:33 PM
Fowler on SVP Show right now.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:34 PM
Henderson is not a starter. Front 7 looks good. Safties are suspect in run support.
As long as the offense is 15-20th in the league, it will take a ton of pressure off the defense (and time off the field).
/Happy with 7-9
September 8th, 2010 at 1:34 PM
Have the Lazy Face Stomper going back to the Titans rumors been advanced at all since yesterday morning?
September 8th, 2010 at 1:34 PM
AFC East: Patriots, Jets, Dolphins, Bills
AFC North: Ravens, Bengals, Steelers, Browns
AFC South: Colts, Texans*, Titans, Jaguars
AFC West: Chargers, Broncos*, Raiders, Chiefs
Byes: (1) Colts & (2) Chargers
Rd 1: (3) Ravens over (6) Broncos; (4) Patriots over (5) Texans
Rd 2: (1) Colts over (4) Patriots; (3) Ravens over (2) Patriots
AFCC: (1) Colts over (2) Ravens
September 8th, 2010 at 1:34 PM
I just don’t see how they beat the Colts, especially if the Colts have homefield. The Pats, Steelers and Chargers I can see beating the Colts, even at Lucas Oil, because of their QB’s. Not the Ravens.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:34 PM
That Stroud/Henderson combo was certainly nasty for a while, though.
Agreed, looking forward to seeing how Alualu and Knighton perform in the middle. Knighton was double teamed alot in the preseason, hopefully open up space for Kampman and Harvey (gasp).
September 8th, 2010 at 1:34 PM
The sleeper team is the chiefs? Jones is done, and has looked done. It’s Cassel/Bowe and no one else. Their defense is trash.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:34 PM
Ray is gonna be tough now that he has a jet-propolsion Raven.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:34 PM
Ty_Webb, comment 102 has the link.
How about solid? Awesome is a little much for a guy who gained less than 600 yards last year….
September 8th, 2010 at 1:35 PM
Why would you double Chad? He’s lost a step. I hope Benson stays healthy so they will keep B. Scott off the field. He is the only Bengals player that scares me on offense.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:35 PM
Deion Sanders is coming back?
best safety in the game
September 8th, 2010 at 1:35 PM
I got the Browns over bucs in our office league. Might switch it to Cards over Rams before Sunday.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:35 PM
I’m not saying Denver will compete for the Division, but saying that two diarrhea-filled balloons like the Chiefs and the Raiders are going to walk all over them is ruhtarded.
/Yes, I remember the last game of the year
Led by Alphonso Smith of course.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:36 PM
A Baton Rouge Metro Council member wants the parish to support a public awareness campaign against men who wear their pants so low that their boxer shorts show. Councilwoman C. Denise Marcelle has a slogan for the campaign: “Low pants, no chance.”
Love the marketing slogan. Love. It.
/have my people call your people
September 8th, 2010 at 1:36 PM
Someone realllly wants the Pats to lose
September 8th, 2010 at 1:37 PM
Deion Sanders is coming back?
well, i’m no opportunist, but if you click my name you can read a sidebar on him from a 1995 pokes game against the bears
September 8th, 2010 at 1:37 PM
Agreed.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:37 PM
Yeah, but now you have to cover either the middle of the field or shut down TO and Chadwick. Or try to do both, because if not, Jordan Shipley is going to run wild in the slot, while everyone concentrates on the Joker twins working the outside.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:38 PM
More non-traditional predictions for AFC:
Peyton finally comes out of the closet to say he enjoys fondling balls as a QB right before the AFC Championship where the center and him have 15 “Ball Exchange” problems and the Ravens go on to beat the Colts 41-17.
Belichek is ratted out by Mangenious for being the guy that used the last of the toilet paper and not replacing the roll.
Rex Ryan takes his shirt off after a game and his stomach is painted like a large face and he does the hula dance after Revis gets torched by Randy “Super Bowl Homeboy” Moss for a game winning 75 yard catch.
Al Davis thinks he is still in the 1970′s and asks Kenny Stabler to QB his team to victory against Terry Bradshaw.
Chris Johnson tears his ACL in game 2 and still says he can gain 2,500 yards before the end of the season is over.
Matt Leinert fills in for Schaub who gets injured and still claims better poon than the rest of the league.
Chris Berman FINALLY gets laryngitis and is not able to speak and ESPN fills his spot with a combo platter of Rush Limbaugh and Keith Olbermann and that show soars to #1 in all of TV.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:38 PM
Make sure you’re drunk at the time. Helped with the Sandman
September 8th, 2010 at 1:39 PM
Ravens O-line is beasty, Rice should make that offense go.
yeah, they should pound the rock, although I’m not sure if they’re going to make Oher move back and forth this year, or platoon the 2 backup tackles at right tackle. I guess they’ll start Cousins. I’ll find out Monday night.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:39 PM
Who gets left in a crumpled heap first? Gonzalez or Bob?
September 8th, 2010 at 1:39 PM
Would’ve been better in haiku form.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:40 PM
It’s a toss-up.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:40 PM
Spencer, meet Mike Williams, you will remember the name of that by the end of Week 1 and besides I see Cleveland as Carolina reborn, the same Carolina team that Tampa Bay ran up and down the field last year before Freeman threw 5 Red Zone INT’s ( not happening this year).
I have no doubt Browns will run up the ball on them them but can the Browns stop the Bucs offense behind Freeman. I have no grand thoughts about this year but saying the Browns are a lock, well I guess we will see..
September 8th, 2010 at 1:40 PM
BTW, Chris Johnson did go over 2,500 yards from scrimmage last year, so he’s got that going for him & his confidence
September 8th, 2010 at 1:40 PM
Gonzo. He’s returning punts. Sanders plays 14 games, gets voted first-team all pro (again).
September 8th, 2010 at 1:40 PM
you only have to cover 20 yards past the LOS against the bengals. and seeing as they’ll be rather easily covered, that shitty excuse for an OL will be exposed for the candy corn colored frauds they truly are.
this ain’t madden lawya…unless you got peyton or big ben back there, you need a decent OL to be good on offense.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:40 PM
Cassel is shit, it’s Charles, Jones, and Pope getting little by little with an occasional screen or cross to Bowe and Chambers. The defense might possibly be the strong-suit this season.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:40 PM
A Badger, a Hawkeye and a… Cal Golden Bear? 2 out of 3 ain’t bad.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:42 PM
Does TBL realize his SB champs have no secondary at all?
September 8th, 2010 at 1:42 PM
That’s an uncomfortable photo, St. Bear
September 8th, 2010 at 1:43 PM
ReaderM…meet sheldon brown.
now meet joe haden.
add eric wright and the browns secondary is actually pretty good. esp against a WR corps full of rooks.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:44 PM
It took me a while to catch on that it’s Bob Sanders coming back and not another Deion comeback.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:45 PM
Even though he seemingly lost a step last year, Browns fans are going to love Sheldon Brown. Awesome in run support. Intelligent guy and great for sound bites.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:46 PM
All I know is that if the Chief dont’ give Charles the ball at least 20+ a game, they are stupid.. the man is a legit back but I’ve stayed away from him in Fantasy because no idea if they are going to use him this year as they should.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:46 PM
hell yea…he’s been a great addition to camp. he’s been the secondary’s mentor and they’ve looked good in the preseason.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:47 PM
unless you got peyton or big ben back there, you need a decent OL to be good on offense.
i’m not saying anything about Chicago, Washington or the Chiefs, because I’m already on the enemies list.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:47 PM
I seriously hope they do. I think he had like 970 yards with a 6.0 ypc in the last 8 games when he was the starter.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:48 PM
But what about Chris Gocong? He should lead the team in beautiful smiles.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:49 PM
rams fans will like him…he’s the guy who killed aj feely’s throwing hand and allowed bradford to start.
/or maybe they’ll hate him
//who knows?
September 8th, 2010 at 1:49 PM
It’s a toss-up.
Pats get edge because of the grazing buffalo
i like the cowboys and chargers’ t-backs better than all
September 8th, 2010 at 1:50 PM
rams fans will like him…he’s the guy who killed
Leonard Little has moved on, why can’t you?
September 8th, 2010 at 1:50 PM
Other than Jack Del Rio, who is the first AFC coach to get canned? If Cincy is a blundering mess with a circus tent over it, I think this is the year that Marvin finally gets the axe. Kubiak is probably the other popular choice.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:51 PM
Also intelligent. But lacking in the “good at football” department.
Are the Browns using him strictly as a pass rusher? He might have a shot that way, I suppose.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:51 PM
I think they’ll use him 15-20 carries a game, plus all the dumps and dinks Cassel throws to him, and it’ll be enough to be productive. The defense will improve, but they need breaks too and only way to do that is the long/drawn out drives by the offense. Just there won’t be too many of those.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:52 PM
my best guess is john harbaugh when he drops the n-bomb in front of ray lewis and gets “justice obstructed.”
September 8th, 2010 at 1:53 PM
pretty much…they won’t have him in coverage. ever.
/im praying
September 8th, 2010 at 1:53 PM
I don’t think they will, but if the Browns don’t win at least six, Mangini is gone.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:53 PM
With Al Davis in charge, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Cable get the boot and some other yesman is told “coach” the team.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:53 PM
he might be gone anyways…GRUDEN, COME ON DOWN!!!
September 8th, 2010 at 1:54 PM
56-55, no playoff wins. At some point you have to say, Thanks for turning things around a little bit, but we both know its time to go.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:54 PM
Other than Jack Del Rio, who is the first AFC coach to get canned?
If the Jags go 7-9 or 8-8 he might survive. Has one year left on a rather hefty extension (though he is not a Gene Smith hire), they won’t can him until they know for sure there will be football next year. No way they are paying two coaches during a lockout.
/
September 8th, 2010 at 1:54 PM
Mangini. The walrus will want to bring in his own guy after a 2-6 start.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:54 PM
Unless they feel like they have a shot at John Fox, I think Mangini’s there for a bit.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:55 PM
The same OL that allowed Benson to run for a franchise record for consecutive 100 yard games? Or the one that reduced their sack total by over 20 from 2008 to 09?
I’m not saying Palmer’s has Emmit Smith’s offensive line, but it’s not quite the sieve it has been in the past either.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:55 PM
Norv Turner still deserves to be fired for helping unleash the Jets as we now know them unto the world..if they’d just beaten a shitty Bengals team in the playoffs I don’t think it would be this bad
September 8th, 2010 at 1:56 PM
I see him getting the boot by ends year. The Raiders could score 24-27 points on that sorry sack of shit defense. They go 7-9.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:56 PM
I think I’m gonna still direct my venom at Jim Caldwell for that one.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:56 PM
You better draft or trade for a QB before Gruden thinks about taking the Browns job, Spencer. He is a Holmgren guy though, right?
September 8th, 2010 at 1:56 PM
Bengals are too cheap to fire him. He will coach out his contract no matter his record.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:57 PM
Jim Caldwell?
/Crosses fingers.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:58 PM
sacks are misleading…palmer rarely dropped more than 5-steps.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:59 PM
yep. im sure the browns will be carrying 5 qb’s on the roster next year.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:59 PM
Soon to be Champs.
September 8th, 2010 at 2:00 PM
Marvin to Mike Brown, right?
September 8th, 2010 at 2:00 PM
Selena Gomez still has the title belt.
September 8th, 2010 at 2:00 PM
Jake Plummer on line 1…
September 8th, 2010 at 2:00 PM
Thought I’d let this slip? YOU SIR ARE WRONG.
/So it was a bad pick. Bad picks happen. They were hardly the only team that liked Smith in that spot, like I said.
Plus they got a Gronkowski back!

“Champion of what?!?”

September 8th, 2010 at 2:05 PM
Heenan’s performance after that match is what cemented him as the best of all time. “I’m not gonna let you make me upset!!!”
September 8th, 2010 at 2:09 PM
Well if you enjoy having more then 4 QB’s on your roster at a time, suffering back to back low sub .500 season then win 9-10 game 1 season only to then lose in the first round with never any shot to go deeper then wash and repeat.. then yes, Gruden is your guy
September 8th, 2010 at 4:28 PM
We’re going to beat the Colts one of these decades BSanders!
