It’s been a little over 24 hours since Carmelo Anthony’s DUI in Denver, and here’s what we’ve got: the Mugshot, an apology, scuttlebutt about where he might have been partying hours before the arrest, the impropriety of preferential treatment from police exists, and … little or no reaction from the mainstream media. We’re sort of perplexed – is ESPN just chalking this up as another 23-year-old doing something stupid? Is that why the “WWL” doesn’t have one bylined story – not even a blog entry! – about ‘Melo’s DUI? True Hoop, which is required reading for NBA fans, has not even mentioned the arrest. Will the 6 pm Sportscenter open with the worthless NFL schedule, which is five months away, and follow-up with the Sonics situation (which will drag out for weeks, if not months) or Anthony’s legit news story? And spare us the “wait for the blood work” argument. He apologized to friends, family and the team for a reason.

Other than this Time to Grow Up column and this He’s Immature column, there’s been little or no mention of Anthony’s arrest. He’s only the fourth-leading scorer in the NBA, donned one of the best-selling jerseys in the league in 2006-2007, and is clocking $13 million this year. This is Anthony’s third sizable fuckup – the snitching and the sucker-punch in the Knicks fight – in only his fifth (and perhaps finest) season as a pro. The timing is beyond horrendous – less than a week before the playoffs, where he’s set to go head-to-head with Kobe Bryant.

ESPN has hired a cadre of writers to cover the NBA (an entity it is heavily invested in), yet none of them – not Chris Sheridan, JA Adande, Ric Bucher, Chris Broussard, etc – has written anything on the topic. How can this be? Why is everyone still hung up on this awards discussion? Oh – that’s right, it’s generates discussion, and comments, and it’s good for all those annoyingly passe debate segments on TV.
