kiper and it’s not even close. mcshay is a dumbass…seriously, how can he honsetly continue saying matt ryan is a top tier QB? does he watch games or just the combine? god i cant stand that asshat.

you think Jones will be good TBL? I have to side with McShay I think he’s similar to Bush in that he will not be able to run by everyone, that will make fore a tough couple years, at least.
April 15th, 2008 at 11:27 am
I think it is still Mel. Kiper is a Baltimore guy so I have to go with him. McShay is obviously being groomed to replace Mel. Kiper has been gracious to say the least as the WWL is clearing passing the torch. NFL Network who has been trying to steal some of the draft coverage would score a big coup by backing the truck up for Kiper. He would bring people who identify the draft and him together. I couldn’t image not watching a draft without him. He still works harder at this than anyone.

For some reason I’ve always held allegiance to Kiper. Hair jokes aside, he’s always seemed to have a good read on most players.
…tho saying bush carried the saints to the nfc title game is an omission of Drew Brees’ efforts, but meh, it seemed like a quick off the cuff statement.
April 15th, 2008 at 11:29 am
since McShay was on Mike and Mike, im voting for Kiper

How about none of the Above?

Whoa Jeremy, easy with the non-verbal communication.
April 15th, 2008 at 11:33 am
@Irish
weren’t both guys on Mike and Mike?
I voted for Mel. That being he is wrong about Felix Jones, no way is he going to be as productive as Jonathan Stewart!
April 15th, 2008 at 11:36 am
mike that video is hilarious
April 15th, 2008 at 11:36 am
i think felix jones is gonna be just fine if he lands on the right team. dallas or denver or indy.
April 15th, 2008 at 11:40 am
I went with Kiper on this one, although I do remember him saying some pretty dumb stuff in the past.
On Felix Jones, I don’t think he is going to be a premier back in the NFL, but like Kiper said, in a two back system he is a great option to a bruising style back. The reason he ran away from defenders while he was in college is because he took what was given to him. Name me a back that wouldn’t do the same.
April 15th, 2008 at 11:40 am
Kiper. I don’t see McShay’s appeal. His coif is no match
April 15th, 2008 at 11:41 am
im sorry Mr Puffy shirt, Mel was on the phone
April 15th, 2008 at 11:43 am
watch that video again and look at the glee on greenberg’s face.
between kiper and mcshay i’d take… joel buchsbaum. he was THE best. RIP joel.

Seriously - is anyone going to watch ESPN’s coverage? Between Berman, Kiper and these other jackasses, it’s torture.
April 15th, 2008 at 11:44 am
beanie wells. he gives back what the defense wanted to. beanie wells is half god, half super god and the Stiff Arm of Tackling Fail will eventually cause another hole in the o-zone layer.

unfortunately yes…Time Warner still has NFL Network hostage.
April 15th, 2008 at 11:46 am
@R-dog - People who don’t get the NFL network will watch ESPN.
April 15th, 2008 at 11:46 am
How many “NFL draft experts” are really needed on one network? Granted, we now talk about the NFL draft pretty much year-round, but doesn’t Kiper pretty much nail this analysis?
And, Kiper is only 11 years older than I am…so he’s not going away anytime real soon. Oh well…one more guy for blogger nation to rip to shreds.
April 15th, 2008 at 11:46 am
Roeth - I was not happy to see that I was forced to pick between the two. The “meh” button is sadly non-existent
April 15th, 2008 at 11:50 am
kiper is ok. as stated before, i preferred buchsbaum much more but that option is no longer available. mike mayock doesn’t seem too terrible. i know some (dr. z, florio) think nfl network’s draft coverage/show is far superior to bspn’s.
i might have to watch nfl network’s coverage this year.
April 15th, 2008 at 11:51 am
Agree.
April 15th, 2008 at 11:51 am
After being cooped up all winter, the last thing I would want to do is set inside on a Saturday and listen to Kiper, Berman, Clayton and the other 75 members of ESPN talk about some DB from some Divison II college and his 40 time.
I agree with the above, no “meh” button leaves me in limbo.
April 15th, 2008 at 11:52 am
Wow, never heard of this Jeremy Green guy … what’s with the hand signals?
April 15th, 2008 at 11:53 am
i’d take kiper, i can tune in randomly on Day 2 during the 34th hour and kiper will be discussing the last player picked and know everything about him. granted, this is his job but he knows his shit. the guy can tell you the pick’s mother’s family tree, what the kid ate for lunch last thursday and how many games his high school team won.
April 15th, 2008 at 11:56 am
how could you concentrate with the guy throwing all those hand signals at you?
April 15th, 2008 at 12:04 pm
kiper is the pick here
April 15th, 2008 at 12:07 pm
Sean Avery approves of Jeremy Green’s interviewing skills.

Don’t you mean Todd McGAY?

April 15th, 2008 at 12:08 pm
I always remember this article when somebody brings up McShay. At least Kiper goes down with the ship when he’s (often) wrong on his picks.
I’m in meetings all day, and I spent my early free time checking to see if I got a team in the commenter draft. I must really like this site.
April 15th, 2008 at 12:09 pm
The best part is that Kiper genuinely seems to dislike McShay. Am I the only one who picks up on an indifferent tone when Kiper has to speak to him?
April 15th, 2008 at 12:11 pm
Wow, I should have followed TBL’s lead (see what I did there?) and watched that first. You’d have to be a dumbass not to pick up on the extreme tension. Whew.
April 15th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
Mike, that may be the single best ESPN clip I’ve ever seen. Totally freakin’ me out.
April 15th, 2008 at 12:15 pm
I don’t think that McShay is incorrect when predicting that Jones will not be a featured back; and for a first-round pick, is it worth it to draft a RB 15-20 and pay him a lot if you’re just going to rotate backs?
I don’t think it makes sense to take him 15-20 due to the money, but 25 and on makes sense; he’ll go to a good team if he goes 25-32*, or cheaper in the second round.
So McShay wins this one IMO, but if your career is being a draftnik, you’re already somewhat of a loser. If they were a little less authoritarian with their predictions, I could stand them all a bit more. But the football guys, exclusively, irritate me to no end. Every team is different; it’s not like baseball where need and team philosophy is much less significant. Even teams like the A’s and Red Sox have drafted more HSers in the past couple of years. It’s a big pool of talent you’re throwing those kids into with baseball.

Funny article on McShay. A distillation:
McShay: “Brady Quinn in my opinion is not worthy of being a top 10 draft pick. He really struggled in the Sugar Bowl…”
Kiper: “Then why is he seventh on your board?”
McShay: Silence, blank stare, and he was pretty much in shock because there was no way around that response. Kiper basically made McShay look like the preschool draftnik-wannabe that he is.
April 15th, 2008 at 12:21 pm
and matt ryan is? dear god i hate him.
April 15th, 2008 at 12:23 pm
Todd McShay is effin’ terrible IMO, but I’ll probably never forgive him for crapping on Jay Cutler the entire way through the draft process. McShay hates Vanderbilt players almost as much as God and championship rings.
April 15th, 2008 at 12:29 pm
This is why I rarely, if ever, watch Sportscenter anymore. It’s PTI or the internets only. The way they attempt to create these false “journalist” gods by propping them up with over-saturation is maddening. I have expect to walk out onto my lawn and see it covered in McShay propaganda fliers that were dropped from a vintage B-25 bomber.
April 15th, 2008 at 12:33 pm
nomo…this isn’t the Marshall Plan, they have interns to pass out fliers now.
April 15th, 2008 at 12:36 pm
Good point on the interns. I forgot that the UConn women’s hoops team is on spring break.
April 15th, 2008 at 1:02 pm
mel kiper is a joke of biblical proportions. look at his chats on espn.com. he recommends a WR for everybody!! he had mike williams as the top-rated player in the 05 draft!!
i refuse to give any credit to an “expert” who routinely suggests teams pick a WR in the top 5. those teams are bad enough as it is, they need guys on the field at all times contributing….not WR’s who have an impact on 3 or 4 plays a game (as 64 catches by a rookie would be considered very good).
thus my view of kiper is damaged for all time. he’s a complete bum.
April 15th, 2008 at 1:11 pm
With McShay at ESPN, Mel must feel like Dirk Diggler did when the Colonel brought in the “next generation” porn stars.
I vote for Mel.
April 15th, 2008 at 1:14 pm
depends on the team. braylon edwards was a great pick for the browns, andre johnson was a great pick for the texans, roy williams (i know not top 5, but close) was a great pick for detroit, larry fitz is doing mightee fine in zona. depends on the team’s philosophy and personnel situation. and, please, no rush to judgement, if a WR goes apeshit in his 3rd year, how is that a bad pick?
April 15th, 2008 at 1:14 pm
kiper>>>> mcshay
mike mayock>>> kiper&mcshay
April 15th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
you make a semi-compelling argument until you realize NONE OF THOSE GUYS HAS BEEN IN THE PLAYOFFS.
houston looked slightly more promising this year, but that’s after investing picks in mario williams, jason babin, demeco ryans, amobi okoye, and travis johnson.
cleveland was on the cusp, but just so happened to strike it rich with derek anderson, kellen winslow, and a guy who should have been offensive rookie of the year (joe thomas). cleveland has really improved their o-line over the past two years, plus they added jamal lewis.
a “great” WR is a luxury in the NFL. you don’t start building a team with a WR. you need a good o-line to give the WR time to get downfield. you need a good QB to deliver him the ball. you need a running game to take pressure off them. a WR requires so many variables, it’s insane to say, “hey, we’ll start our rebuilding process with andre johnson…even though we don’t have an accurate QB, our o-line can’t give us time, and our running game can’t create any balance”. it’s absolutely absurd logic.
April 15th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
For all of its hype and predictions, the NFL has the least tangible outcome of any draft in any sport. The two best quarterbacks in the NFL are a Consensus #1 overall pick and a 6th round afterthought. It’s not like the tight-end your team picks at pick #23 is going to make or break your Super Bowl run.
